- f7!.m Slmffef, WMM. Bw The halls of C. C. shone with a bright spin't this year, due to the work of the newly organized ART CLUB, which is under the guidance of Sr. Michael. The members have displayed their artistic ability through their various proiects throughout the year. Colorful posters announcing coming social events, school meetings, and concerts me Q1 F served as reminders to the students. Many of the signs and posters for the Science Fair exhibits were made by the mem- bers. The Club also furnished the large-scale pictures which decorated the stage during the Student Spiritual Council Assemblies. Newly organized this year, under the direction of Sister Michael, THE CAMERA CLUB has aimed at improving the technique of its members, as well as fostering interest in photography among the students. One of C. C.'s hardest working clubs, they have turned out hundreds of permanent photographic records for the ECHO and SHAMROCK. Row l: Gib Peiry, Larry Moser, Ed Bensman. The coaches molded the boys into an impressive team that the school can be pround of. This was Mr. Cobett's first year at C.C., he assisted with the football and basketball program in addition to his duties as head track coach. He was well liked and aided greatly in building up the team spirit. This looked like the year for the Anderson brigade. The quality of the material was unmistakable until a number of iniuries dimmed our hopes. The coaches had good material to work with and obtained the best from the boys. The squad seemed to follow the splendid example of co-captains Jerry Moore and Bob Arnold as well as the six players nominated to the all City aggregation. The team played what could be easily termed a suicide schedule. Team spirit was evidenced in every game. Father Lester as athletic director demonstrated a great interest in the team, recognizing that athletics at C.C. are an important part of our education, and that inter-scholastic competition can be a large factor in character building. The coaching staFf faces a mammoth task of rebuilding, since lO of this year's ll starters were seniors. However, with a carry-over of this year's team spirit, and continued fine coaching, the squad will always be a credit to the school. lOO Row 1: Student Managers, F. Carteaux, P. Pitzen. Row 2: T. MCCQ66 af .i!0l'l'L8 Riddled by iniuries throughout the i952 season, C.C. nevertheless racked up its second City Championship in three years. Many potential all-city players were iniured before the sea- son had hardly begun. Two time all-city halfback Acy Chandler broke his arm. Eddie DeWald, our sprinting star, after a successful first game against Richmond in which he darted 90 yds. for a touchdown, was put out for the season with a kidney iniury. First string tackle Tom Huhn sat out the September drills in a hospital bed with a bad knee. Co-captain Bob Arnold and quarterback Jerry Hipskind came up with fractured ankles. It can be safely said that these iniries added a few gray hairs to the head of coach Fordy Anderson. Never- theless the team produced six all-city players, adding again to C.C.'s glory on the gridiron. The season proved a moderate success showing what can be accomplished with grim determination, hard driving and spirit. lt displays, too, that C.C. has come a long way from its defeatist attitude of past years, thanks to the coaches and the excellent calibre ofthe boys they had to work with throughout the football campaign. Our cheerleaders Dick Parquette, Vernon Urbine, Don Sorg, and John Rohyans, spur the Irish on to victory . . . .lack Scholl bulls over from the two for victory over South . . . Gene Eitrid twists and turns . . . Tim Miller hustles around end against a tough Archer eleven. i 1 'L rin 5 af WL, cilonom 9 if Although not emerging entirely victorious with out-of-town foes, the lrish made their city tilts count. Against local competition they proved successful. These games were fought down to the wire. The Concordia game was our only easy match. Up-set minded North Side did its utmost to stop the ground attack of the Andersonmen. Penalty after penalty set us back on our goal in the final minutes to enable the Redskins to score for a tie. South Side proved our strongest city competition until C.C. rallied its forces and sent Jack Scholl piling over for the deciding factor. ln the season finale the Central Tigers capitalized on a last minute miscue, eked out a tie, and the Irish claimed the city title by a narrow margin. The opposition was kept off balance by our mixture of the T formation and the single wing attack. Two city champion- ships in three years gives evidence that the football picture at C.C. has been bright indeed. Jack Schall and Gene Eifrid are happy about their All-Ft. Wayne status . . . Bill Becker, Joe Henry, Jerry Moore and John Friess complete C.C.'s half dozen members of the all-city team . . . Bud Brown administers a crushing tackle to halt a Redskin march, Eifrid recovering for C.C. as Morel moves in . . . Ed DeWald moves at Richmond where he went 90 for the TD. S QQUQAIOZ5 QCLJOIQ xS?CU'L6!0lfi fri The essential item in winning any Championship is team play. This characteristic shone brightly in our T952 City Champs. The team had many outstanding individuals, but their ability stood out only against the backdrop of the hard driving play of the rest of the squad. C.C. led Ft. Wayne schools with six boys on the All-City team. Co-captain .lerry Moore, 60 minute center and rugged line-backer easily led all competition. Gene Eifrid's field generalship netted him a well-earned berth on the aggrega- tion. Joe Henry's mighty mite blocking at the guard spot was all-city dynamite. Bill Becker for smooth kicking and all around play was chosen unanimously for the honor. Jack Schall's crush- ing drives ofT guard and tackle placed him on the coveted team. These players received acclaim, but you cannot 'forget the hard work of Bob Arnold, the broken field running of Bob Wruble, and the tine passing of Tim Miller to name a few of the players who formed the backbone of the team that lives up to the name Fighting lrish. An opening victory over an eager Elmhurst quintet pushed our Irish oFf to a flying start on their i952-53 hardwood campaign. Momentarily faltering under a free-throw barrage at Kendalville, C. C. bounced back to stop their County cousins from New Haven. The momentum enabled our boys to put up a real fight against the perennially strong Central Tigers at the North Side gym, before succumbing. The Hicksmen then proceeded to roll over Huntertown, Concordia and Decatur Catholic before bumping into more City opposition and defeat at the hands of North Side at the Decatur holiday Tourney. After a surprising loss in the consolation tilt to Decatur public, our boys returned to Ft. Wayne and pushed past Bluffton and this same Decatur team before being iolted by Central and North in a One-two punch. The Varsity revived again against County quintets, to the tune of four more victories including a thriller against County champ Leo High, a game which was pulled out of the embers in the closing seconds of the contest. The team then took a picnic trip to Columbia City, where they fattened their shooting percentages, bringing home 82 points, a high for the season. The stage was set for a fitting finish in our lone en- counter with South Side at the War Memorial Coliseum. The outcome was a shock and a disappointment, a one- point loss marred by publicly admitted bad officiating. The Irish hit North Side in the sectional on the rebound and overcame a fourteen point deficit in the third stanza while the C. C. rooters among the capacity crowd went wild, only to weaken in the final minutes of the game. lt was a season of thrills, ioyous moments and heart- breaks, and, in the record books, the most successful in several years. Every player in this club has distinguished himself not only as an individual but as a team-man as well. Win, lose, or draw, these boys proved themselves deserving of this award. That big C represents the school's recognition of those who have participated in a maiority of inter-scholastic athletic contests in any one spot. Their meritorious service in this field of extra-curricular activities was a credit to the school they so ably represented. This year there will be additional mongrams for those who took an active part in C. C.'s attempt to bring home the City Tennis Championship Trophy. This will include at least Ken Kimmel, John Yerick, Larry Badders, and Tony Lisman who launched C. C.'s first tennis season in many years. Lower: Row lf R. Urbine, J. Hall, E. Eifrid, D. Fenker, G. With Eddie DeWald running the lOO yd. dash and 220, Ed Sigl topping TO tt. in the pole vault and Jerry Wagner breaking the school record for broad lump, the team picked up important points. The capable showing of Bob Wruble on the hurdles and Jerry Moore throwing the shot put gave evidence that C.C. was well represented on the track as well as in other sports. Tennis returned to C.C. after a brief absence. With Father Hammond as its faculty spon- sor, the team had a big lead in the City Championship race on May l. Defeating South Side, Concordia, and Bluffton in quick succession, the Irish proved that they were the team to beat in this area. The GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION, one of the largest groups of the school, provides organized games in various sports for the entertainment of the girls and also on a competitive basis. Intramural games in volleyball and basketball are-played by homeroom teams in the morning before classes. Every year the club sponsors two hikes which are held on holidays, and a roller skating party. A point system is used so that one point is given for every fifteen minutes spent in athletic activities. Cn this basis, members can attain the awards of triangle, numeral, and letter monograms. A special party is held in the school cafete- ria for the presentation of these awards. This year Violet Bobay won a trophy for the highest number of points. Miss Julia Heighway, the G.A.A. mod- erator, is kept busy by her other positions as Health and Safety teacher and girls' gym instructor, but always has the time to listen to students' problems. As Freshmen we were confused, eager. As we advanced in school, we grew in grace and knowledge. Now that we are leaving, we take with us more than memories, we hope that we have undergone a real change, a genuine growth of mind and soul. We are the products of this four year process. We must carry into our adult lives the permanent reflection of Him who is our model-Christ. mu. . 1 ,Q . I is 5,. if 4 ' A. 4 if f. . M I' -' 'f 0- 6 ' -hm QM ' 2 M - ' Hn an ,A gf I, ' :-- -.. And comes the spring, a part of each Senior will remain, along with the symbolic shillelagh, under the shadow of the statue. We leave something very dear to us, four precious years of our youth, the ioys and struggles that necessarily belong to this period of our coming of age. But we take something even more precious away from C. C., from under the shadow of the statue - the formation, the influence of Him whom the statue represents - Christ. , To write a class history would be impossible, for everyone retains his mcst memorable experiences in his own heart. School has meant: books, pep-sessions, lost locker keys, the rush at the center stairs, math assignments, and the 'final bell. Now all are things of the past. lt was a memorable past, an excellent school, and the class was superb - our Senior Class of l953. 32 enior .gllzofarfi 3miL.l tl t t Y I Four Year Honors: Row l: W. We sometimes associate scholastic honors with being a bookworm, letting the world and its interests roll by. These seniors will laugh at your library dust and thick spectacles. Look over the seven rows of faces above. They have been in the thick of class activity, assuming real leadership, taking the lion's share of respon- sibility for whatever needed doing. The four year honor students especially have gained our respect. lt was a long tour years, but they enioyed it. The privilege of delivering the Valedictorian and the Salutatorian addresses went to the top senior boy and girl, the best and most enviable scholastic award a C. C. student can achieve. We are proud of them from first to last. 33 ala eniorfi - gy gafof Representative Seniors: Carol Mauch and Donald Nommay, Most Co-operative: Martin Tierney and Sue Ledden, Most Scholarlyp John Friess and Nancy Roethele, Most Friendly: Eileen O'Day and Bernard Roussey, Most Gentlemanly and Ladylikeg Nancy Blee and Gene Eifrid, Most Athletic. These are our choices-the students with whom we lived and studied and played-the ones we think are tops for a spirit of co-operation, for a cheerful friendliness, for the fine art of being well-mannered, for intellectual and athletic ability and effort. They sum up, as well as any of us could, the qualities we want outsiders to associate with Central Catholic students. That is why we call them our representative seniors. ' The five categories represented by these students bespeak something solid and worth while in the hearts of those chosen to fill them. They reflect the total picture of Catholic education. We think they are the best argument that could be given for the theme we chose for this book -Christ in the student. 3 4 l if Sig L.: I swf! Woods, ranks high among Central Catholic organizations. This year our band was honored by being chosen to perform for both presidential candidates. This group has ap- peared in the Christman Concert, the Catholic Evidence Lecture Series, and the annual February concert. A new policy this year, designed to emphasize the quality of individual playing, required that each member of the band render a solo each semester. Not only has the band won many honors as a group, but individuals have qualified for numerous awards. Every student takes great pride in the band, it is a credit to the school. Mr. Charles R. Smith, associate conductor ofthe band, has proven capable and talented in his fine work this year. He has written and arranged a colorful composition called Rhumbette, which he conducted at the concert. He also teaches instrumental music in the grade schools of Fort Wayne. 74 ,.,,.-...YL. As normal teen-agers, we dream our dreams and worship our heroes. ln this bewildering process of growing up, we look for an ideal, a hero to inspire and motivate us. This ideal person must love every shred of our adoles- cent personalities, he must understand our tremendous enthusiasms, and appreciate the fun we have at a sock hop, the fervent resolutions we make during retreat. This hero will be a loveable, attractive human-being. This person is Christ, totally human, genuinely divine. He is our perfect ideal and model and more. His very divine lite was planted as a seed in our souls at our baptism. lt is the purpose of C.C., of every single class and activity, to nourish this seed, to bring it to adult maturity, to form the mind and heart of Christ in us. Our marching band symbolizes school spirit, the discipline and the staunch courage of our athletic teams, the pride we feel in our school. The Marching Band of Central Catholic High School has proven to be one of the outstanding bands of the State by receiving superior ratings year after year in State contests. This year our band received the inspection trophy which signifies that the band is the sharpest military high school group in the state. The band performs at football and basketball games as well as in various parades throughout the year. The color guard is Walter Carr, Jim Thompson, Jim Kever, and Byron Wyss. Gerald Wagner, as Drum Maior, bears the honor and responsibility of issuing march- ing commands to the band. Joseph M. Woods, Director of Music Education, has done much to broaden and intensify the music education program in Fort Wayne's Catholic schools. He has built the band and orchestra into well 'functioning concert groups, the awards they have received bear witness to this fact. Central Catholic is 'Fortunate to have a man of his ability and attainments. These groups have per- formed at the Christmas Concert, done caroling from the Lincoln Tower, and they sang at the Catholic Evidence Lecture Series. The annual Spring Concert Singing Voices, featuring the dramatic presentation of the Song of Norway and several outstanding solo renditions, was enthusiastically received by Fort Wayne music lovers. At the annual music concert many mem- bers of our choral groups received gold and silver medals. The Varsity Chorus, one of the largest school organizations, represents C. C. singing. The chorus helps each member to develop a pleasing personality and confident self-expression through song. The officers, Ladonna Roffelsen lseatedl, Tony Settimi, Carol Mauch, Tom Nycum, Norine Ankenbruck, Mary Ann Oswald and Shirley Blackburn, have' done a great deal to lighten the burden of Mr. Yonkman. This group, elected by the members, also plans the various parties and picnics that come as reward for hard work ofthe groups. Central Catholic can be proud to have such a polished chorus within its school. Mr. Yonkman, who is also organist and choirmaster at the Cathedral, has applied his knowledge and personality to the fullest degree to build this superb chorus. 80 . . . Carol Mauch, staH artist, was not present. 0 ummarize due .Spairif What is a yearbook made of? Ads, Art, subscriptions, pictures, copy and more. But as bricks do not make a home, pages and pictures do not make an ECHO. Through l952-53 we tried to catch the heart of Central Catholic, the impact that classes, activities and sports have had on our hearts, the permanent spirit that will still be ours long after daily events have been filed and forgotten. Then an ECHO is also made of patience and iudgement, the perseverance that plods through the long winter months when publication, the fruit of our labors, seems remote. Larry Moulin, our Editor-in-Chief, contributed the lion's share of man power, man hours, decision and drive. Elaine Gocke kept her finger on the finance of the infant ECHO of l953. The yearbook is especially the pride and ioy of the senior class, and Carol Klingenberger and Jim Thompson had the responsibility of herding our graduates to the photographer, checking those precious thumbnail biographies in the senior directory. Our family of undergraduates numbered close to a thousand this year, and Bill Landstoffer came through with the detail work of pictures, names, honors. Carol Mauch, our staff artist, very capably depicted the influence ot Christ in the various phases of C.C. life. X Over all there was the persistent hope that we could hold up, for all to see, the strong, gentle personality of Christ, the reality of His role, the vital importance of His influence in our classes, activities, and athletics. 84 i 0-olaerafion kr uccead Meetings, drives, cash and bookkeeping kept the ECHO advertising and circulation departments busy through the fall and winter months. They discovered that a good yearbook is based on sound financing and hard work. Our department editors toiled long and quietly over student lists and picture identification, then perspired through the spring copywriting drive. The big moment, the one satisfaction, was the pleasant task of bringing the finished product around to the homerooms. Our unsung field staff,' the homeroom representatives, put in untold man-hours hounding their fellow classmen for ads, down payments, picture returns. Long on patience, short on praise, they provided indispensable drudgery and detail-work for the ECHO. ECHO Representatives: Foreground: R. Robertson, R. Miles, R. Dunn, B. Rauch, P. Bradley, K. To be a member of Quill and Scroll is the outstanding honor that can be accorded a high school iournalist. Recognition by this international society is more than sufficient reward for the hours of work put into a high school publication. Eligibility for the National Society of High School Journalists is based on scholastic and iournalistic ability, and the recommendation of the publication adviser and the school principal. Although the requirements are rigid, the honor is great. Eight seniors and four iuniors were nominated to the society from C.C.'s present crop of writers. Their formal reception, at which they received the Quill and Scroll pin, the distinctive emblem of the society, took place several weeks before the close of school. Contact with a live school publication has taught this group the power of the press, thus pointing out the need for Catholic iournalists. We hope that someday we will find these students high in the iournalistic field, defending Christian ideals with the powerful weapon of their pens. 86 is Lfecfive: S I Zgeffer . . sl it Jack Spaeth ..,,,,,A..... The pep-sessions were scheduled by the council for the football and basket- ball season. Committees were chosen from the group to handle the selling of the season tickets for the various sports and to plan the voting system for the Senior Prom Theme. The work ofthe STUDENT SPIRITUAL COUNCIL is to sponsor the spiritual activities ofthe high school. The officers and homeroom representatives do their best by means of bulletin boards, posters, meetings, programs, and reminders, to keep the spiritual side of high school life before the minds ofthe students. , Taking the motto The Sacred Heart for Fort Wayne, Fort Wayne for the Sacred Heart, the Council started the year with a campaign for the Enthronement in the homes of the students. During October honor was given to Our Lady in the form of the Living Rosary and the council assisted with the activities of the retreat. A special bulletin board displaying life-size figures reminded us in November ofthe need of the Poor Souls. December witnessed the Christmas play written by the students, and the Council sponsored the display of the Art Club at the Christ Child Festival. At the opening ofthe new year, the S.S.C. otticers attended the Catholic Action Convention in Milwaukee and brought back splendid suggestions which were carried out during the future monthly meetings. In May, Mary took the center ot the stage as the mem- bers ofthe Council crowned her at the month's opening, conducted daily devotions in her honor during the month, and sought her blessing and protection upon the new ofhcers in their installation at its close. i Spiritual activity cannot be measured in terms of success or failure, but it willing- ness and hard work on the part ofthe officers and Council Moderator Sister Assumpta is any indication of achievement, there is a high percentage chalked up for them in the Golden Book of Eternity. 90 .ii ,,,.,..ap, Garage ZW flue Hank J4Am! The FIGHTING 69th is a campaign in which Catholic youths are asked to pledge themselves to greater purity of life. As a means to this end, devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary are especially recommended. The name is a take-oFf on the New York regiment of World War I fame, the famous Fighting 69th. It fits the present campaign perfectly, inasmuch as those who enlist are expected to enter a spiritual battle to fight for the ideals ofthe oth and 9th commandments of God, which include purity in word, action, and dress. The organization, under the guidance of Sister Assumpta, began its program at the beginning of the year with a meeting-assembly. Father Conroy, the national director, was the guest speaker. The captain and Iieutenants received a Fighting 69th pin, and the freshmen were enrolled. Three new projects were begun this year. In co-operation with a nation-wide campaign, the observance of a novena to St. Maria Goretti was promoted. The ideals of The Fighting 69th were spread among the service men by means of pam- phlets. A bulletin was posted weekly near the second floor office, giving the Legion of Decency rating on the current movies in Ft. Wayne. A strict observance of this list was encouraged. Thus, keeping in line with the national program, C.C.'s students did their part as Fighting 69th campaigners.
