Published bi-weekly, each edition has made them better iournalists. They waded through Copy, galley sheets, page proofs, pictures, cuts, heads and dummies and came up with a paper of distinction. Rotating staffs have created more colorful copy from a more abundant supply of ideas. Besides their publishing activities, the staff, directed by Bill Federspiel, staff photographer, equipped a darkroom on the third floor, which will make developing and enlarging of news pix more convenient and will enable shutterbugs to use their hobby for the good of SHAMROCK and C.C. Better acquaintance with schoolmates was brought about by the introduction of a new column, Student Personalities in the News on 'feature page. The concert and marching bands, the high school symphony orchestra, the string orchestra, mixed chorus and vocal ensemble are among the best. Mr. Woods has been untiring in his efforts and has spent many hours in educating students in music and in appreciation and love for good music. Students ofthe music department receive full credit for classes attended, yet find time to take an active part in the life of the student body. They sponsor the fooball dance, the Valentine dance, and the C.C.H.S. Review at the close ofthe school year in coopera- tion with the entire faculty and student body. Because of the growing popularity of the annual music concert series, more season tickets have been sold than any previous year. The music department is proud of this, for their music is being shared with more people. On the following pages, the music department presents the marching band, concert band, symphony orchestra, string orchestra, dance band, mixed chorus and vocal ensemble. 36 freaen U., M, Right: Joseph M. During the '51 season, the Irish played heads-up ball, but met with stiff competition on several occasions. After winning the first three games of the season against Concordia, Indian- apolis' Crispus Attucks, and Alexandria, the Irish win string was extended to I3 wins including the 1949 and '50 seasons. Then the Andersonmen traveled to the neighboring state of Ohio and met a highly rated Central squad of Lima. It was the first time since the Central game of I949 that the Irish had been defeated. The Irish, defeated by a 24-7 score, scored first in the early seconds of the game on a completed pass from Acy Chandler to Tom Butler on a line buck by Chandler. That was the only time the Irish really had any scoring oppor- tunities. Lima later scored and blew out C.C.'s last hope for victory. However, the Irish made a sensational comeback in bad weather to defeat Gary Edison, 33-6. 61 e oac eam- acfzbone of the esqua Throughout any football season, a coach has numerous hardships and worries, as well as happy and victorious moments. Head coach Fordy Anderson, along with assistant coach Jack Quinn, undoubtedly had their share during the 1951 season at C.C. A superior coaching iob has been done by Mr. Anderson and Mr. Quinn, and a great deal ot credit is due them. Although the schedule was rough and the breaks tough, the results were good. The coaches had good material with which to work. Senior members of the squad were Co-captains Don Rushin, quarterback, and Tony Kierzkowski, tackle, Bob Henline, back, Dick Schuhler and Don Turney, tackle and end. With a considerable number of underclassmen returning, the coaches should also have good prospects for another year. ln practice sessions: lUpper lefthand cornerj head coach Fordy Anderson and assistant coach Jack Quinn, lcenter topl left tackle Dick Schuhler, ltop rightj co-captain Tony Kierzkowski. tBottom leftj halt-' back Acy Chandler and quarterback Don Rushing tbottom centerj end Don Turney, lbottom rightl halfback Bob Henline. The Irish Basketball team had many close games, but those played against North Side Redskins were the games the team and their faithful rooters most hated to lose. Of the three against North Side, the Hicksmen lost only one by more than one point. The other two games were real thrillers and the Redskins won only on the strength of baskets made in the last few seconds. Gordon Dodane and Gene Eifrid were the sparks that sent basketballs flying in all games, but they depended onthe good playing of other varisity players to back them. ln this way, the Central Catholic Fighing Irish ended the l95l-52 season with a lO won-lO lost record. 64 If X Si Q . f V ll? , itxS!Sf' - fi f ' ' 1,.V S :Tg?,'x X 'T 'x'.' The year-round program of the Girls' Athletic Association program is made possible and super- vised by Miss Julia Heighway, instructor of physical education. G.A.A. sponsors basketball and volleyball tournaments in which home room teams compete. Also under G.A.A. patronage is a ping- pong tournament. Members relax from such strenuous exercise with an annual hike and a skating party. All their hours of play do not go unrewarded for the girls receive four points for each hour spent in sports. They can acquire the triangle l35O pointsl, the numerals C800 pointsl and the C H500 pointsl. These are given at an annual award party, held this year Feb. 20, and on Recognition Day. 69 gym Clauea Keep U4 On ur oe4 Many a girl has walked into one of Miss Julia Heighway's gym classes knowing next to nothing about sports and has come out a potential athlete. She has learned that sportsmanship is every bit as important in a game as accuracy and timing. Freshmen have classes twice a week, while Sophomores enioy three days of gym. Each class begins with five or ten minutes of calisthenics. The girls begin their sports program with volleyball. After the Thanksgiving holidays, this is followed by basket- ball, which seems to be the favorite of the majority of gym classes. Then, as Spring comes around, so does softball. Also dur- ing the year, the girls tumble and play a bit of dodgeball. No matter what the sport may be you can be sure that all Freshmen and Sophomores look forward to their class with Miss Heighway. Citizens of the other, much more important world-the Kingdom of God. We C.C.'ers like our everyday world, although it has its bewildering moments. Here we are introduced to new experiences and life-long friendships which mold our personal- ities and teach us how to live in this world. This world means many things-a prom, a thrilling victory in sports, a great scholastic honor, a hilarious happening in class, a wiener-bake in the fall, an embarrassing moment. But we cannot contribute anything to this world nor enjoy it fully, unless we strive constantly to be better citizens of our more important world, the Kingdom of God. lt is in this other world that we come to know the full meaning of happiness. ln it we have strength, courage and inspiration to fulfill our purpose on earth-to know, love and serve God, to be happy with Him in Heaven. ECHO borrows its theme this year from the statement issued in i950 by the Catholic Bishops of the United States. We will show how Central Catholic prepares us for this dual citizenship, recognizing us as CITIZENS OF TWO WORLDS. lie gint year id the arafesfi, grealziea ,W B . EVERY WHOLESOME EXPERIENCE WE HAVE HAD HAS LED TO THE DEVELOP- MENT OF THIS SENSE. IN A WORLD TORN WITI-I VVAR AND DISUNITY, WE CAN USE HELPS AFFORDED BY OUR OTHER WORLD TO ERING PEACE TO THIS ONE IP-I OUR GENERATION. WE REALIZE THAT OUR HAPPINESS WILL LIE ONLY IN THE COMPLETE DEDICATION OF OUR WHOLE PERSONALITIES TO GOD'S SERVICE. IN THIS SERVICE, WE, AS SOLDIERS OF CHRIST, LOYAI. TO HIM AND TO HIS CHURCH, WILL CONTINUE TO USE THE SACRAMENTS AS THE POWERFUL WEAPONS THEY ARE. 2 T 'B 5 9 N 1 I--D f ? ff! E if I 5, ,ni nmaiclzec! aa eacfem or Claw of '52 'ultima Well-qualified and representative students have led the class of '52 during their last year at C.C. They are Joseph Burgard lin circlel, president, Carolyn Steig- meyer, vice-president, Roger Uecker, secretary, and Patricia Leffers, treasurer. lt is always an honor and privilege to be an oflicer of any class, but especially of the Senior class. These ofiticers have been prominent in extra-curricular activities, in addition to leading class events, such as the Senior Prom and Washington class trip. And what ofthe class they have headed this year? To start the ball rolling, they are the largest group to graduate from C.C., 290 strong. The statue of the Sacred Heart installed at the Enthronement ceremony this Spring, was the first school gift made by a graduating class. Much ofthe credit for forming the Student Council as a working organization goes to the Seniors. They have been tops on the Honor Roll, having as many as one-fifth of their members doing superior scholastic work. And of these, 30 were eligible for Four Year Honors, the largest group in the history of C.C. 94 4
