Of course, we're referring to Coach Mike Scott in connection with the development of this year's varsity. Although not too consistent as winners, the Irish could never be counted out in any game because they refused to just Ulay down and play deadn. They played their hearts out in every game and wouldnit concede a thing to any team regardless of su- perior odds. Despite a poor beginning in which they won only 3 in 11 starts, the purple refused to fold. They came back strong in the next 6 games winning five. During the regular campaign, including the Holiday Tourney, the Irish won 9 of 20 games for a near 5070 average. One of the high lights on the seasonls card was an overtime thriller with Huntertown, won by CC., 40-38. The feature attraction of this game was an individual scoring duel between ,lim Buchanan of Hunter- town and our own Jim Purviance. Throughout the evening Purviance flipped 26 points through the hoop, including eight in a row. Altogether he hit twelve for seventeen. Although handicapped by lack of height, the players more than made up for it by their playing ability and will to win. Jack Leemhu is Page 102 fv,..--W N. -.-.f ... .. as . . 1:inm:zam,.m,sn.c.a. Rue:-cle KaAlzet6a I Team Although not too impressive on the court this year, winning only 5 of 17 games, the Reserves are gaining valuable basketball ex- perience. It is no easy task to groom inexperienced players, hut Mr. Miller must be given due credit for the Work he has accom- plished. lt isnit the scores, neces- sarily, that indicate the calibre of the Reserves, but rather how well they will use this experience in future years. Included among the candidates for next year's varsity squad will be: Norman Hipskind, a promising Freshmang Don Lor- raine, and Tom Roy to mention a few. fack Leemhuis ?reAluman KaAlzet6all Team Many of these boys have the potentialities of clever varsity players. With a year or two of training to polish the rough spots they should make a great team. Some of the boys are more ad- vanced than the others, and have already played some games with the reserve team. The boys have entered into competition with those of their own calibre, and compiled a record of five wins and three losses. Ken Grote Page 104 Track Team To complete the athletic pro- gram of the year, track finds its place near the end of the school year. Through the efforts of Coach Scott, track at Central Catholic is becoming a bigger threat to our opponents every year. Each year brings a more promising and ex- perienced squad. Together with the spring track team, comes the cross-country track team, which takes place in the fall. A cross-country track team consists of boys who can run a two-mile race in due time through open country. Although it is still young at C.C., it is also becoming an ever increasing popular sport. Bob Pran ser L. Ntlaletic Monogram Yllinnef-A Few of us realize how much work and time is given after school hours by these boys who bring so much honor and glory, not only to themselves, but also to our school. The outstanding seniors whom C.C. will lose in this year,s gradu- ation class are: Tom Jehl, Jim Beck, Terry Logan, Sam Talarico, Jim Purviance, and Jack Mac- Bride. Much of the credit for de- veloping such fine team spirit be- longs to our coaches who have spent their time and patience di- recting our teams onward. Dick Harber Page 105 I TRACK TEAM Row I-G. Sanborn Page 113 The fclw iA bedicated to Ei leap 77011 The Most Reverend John Francis Noll, fifth Bishop of the Diocese of Fort Wayrie, celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of his consecration to the holy priesthood this year. In that length of time, he has affected the lives of many people. probably even you! Of course. he has baptized many people. and confirmed even more. but that has not been the extent of his work. At Kendallville. his first pastorate, Father Noll became interested in mission work among non-Catholics. For one year. he was relieved of parish work in order to conduct lecture courses for these people. He has still retained that interest and does much to correct the attitudes of non-Catholics. In the peace and quiet of Besancon. where he was transferred in 1902, Father Noll began a literary career which he has pursued ever since. His many pamphlets and books have found their way into thousands of homes. His first pamphlet. KIND WORDS FROM YOUR PASTOR. is still in demand after 45 years. At Huntington, in l9I2, Father Noll founded OUR SUNDAY VISITOR. a national Catholic weekly. which has attained the largest circulation of any Catholic paper in the world. Every Thursday, this paper enters into your home to pleasantly acquaint you with your religion and the activities of your Church. In the year I923. Monsignor Noll built, one mile west of Huntington, a Training School, Novitiate. and Motherhouse for Missionary Catechists. Without the direct aid of the Ca- techists and the indirect aid of Monsignor Noll, more than 2,000,000 Mexicans would have grown up without any knowledge of their religion. The very school we attend would still be a dream if it were not for the effort, prayers, and financial aid of Bishop Noll. In 1939, Central Catholic High School of Fort Wayrie was formally dedicated and opened. Other Catholic High Schools have been established for Hammond, East Chicago, and South Bend. A beautiful hotel has been converted into a seminary. This seminary, called Our Lady of The Lake, is located at Lake Wawasee. One would think that Bishop Noll's day was capably filled by his many activities. He nevertheless manages to hold a position on the National Committee of the Legion of Decency. and he recently was elected chairman of an Episcopal Committee to direct a national campaign against lewd literature. To acknowledge the accomplishments of His Excellency throughout the world and especially here at Central Catholic we humbly dedicate to him the 1948 ECHO. Besides his duties as keeper of the funds . Klsgr. Feltes regularly visits the Junior homerooms. The students are given a thorough course concerning the Sacrament of Matrimony. The senior class is indeed grateful to Msgr. Feltes for his unfailinfr attention to even those small items which help to make our last year a happy and comfortable one. This is only one of the themes he has stressed to the student body to show how important it is to act the part of a dignified high school student. In our daily lives we have seen how helpful Fatheris suggestions concerning self-control can be to en- able us to overcome small temptations. qklthoufzh this is Fr. Wlieii high school days are over, memories are really the only things we have to keep. Most of our school acquaintances have gone their separate ways and our thoughts now turn to reminiscing .... Looking back we can see ourselves as members of a three-hundredfold group of wide-eyed Freshmen wandering from class to class. getting lost 011 the third floor and looking to the upperclassmen in sheer awe .... The end of the war found us in our Sophomore year and enjoying it im- mensely. The newness was beginning to wear off, but activity in sports. clubs, and more difficult classes readily took its place. We ruled at the Freshmen-Sophomore Welcome and thought ourselves quite grown up, until 194116 rolled around and we received the rank of Juniors. Our Junior boys were showing their athletic ability on the football field and basketball court .... Time seemed to be running now instead of marching and the cher- ished, long-awaited year in which we would be the 'chonorablen Seniors was standing be- fore our eyes. Vile re-re-re-elected Tom Jehl as our President. I The football season was most satisfying. and it was well rounded out by our Football Dance with Jim Beck reigning as a deserving King. Beautiful Gerry Mommer was elected to reign at our farewell Senior Prom. Basketball season saw our Senior boys doing their best to break even. All too soon the last days at C.C. drew near and We prayed fervently at Baccalaureate Mass that our close friendships would last. The Senior Prom and Graduation Exercises were the last time We could really call ourselves the Senior class of 1948. These are days, hours, years spent at the best school ever.
