The smallest contribution admits one as a member. The American Junior Red Cross has the same activities as the Ameri- can Red Cross. only on a smaller basis. Our soldiers were not forgotten. The Red Cross 1'6lllPllll76I'ECi them. Neatlv- made patriotic favors were provided for our service men through special parties held in their honor. The Red Cross made everv effort to make Christmas as merry as possible for people of the war torn Countries. Each home l'O0l1l was given a number of boxes to fill. Along with the usual gifts of toys. such articles as soap and wash cloths were sent to them. A letter was received at Central Catholic. which acknowledged the receipt of all of these gifts. Cafeteria Staff At 11:30 every morning there is a hustle for the school cafeteria. Waitresses are always ready to serve the students. If they arrive at 11:32, it's too had. At that time itls hard to find a seat or booth that is not piled high with hooks, and overcrowded with students. About 12:00 most of the once-hungry students have already eaten their dinner prepared by Mrs. Seibert, known to the students as g'lVIom. But the students donlt leave at 12:00. At this time the cafeteria be- comes a social study period. 97 CAFETERIA STAFF Center, outside row D. Engleking 1st row: Mrs. Seibert R. Nichter M. Saxton H. Christman K. Glospier E. Moore K. Fox me all That 'ipractice makes perfectl' has governed to a great extent the success of the band. Any member can tell you that it would be much easier not to practice. If they had been selfish, we well might know what would result. It takes cooperation to make a band-they must play together, they must know how to follow their director. So we here salute the most unselfish, the most cooperative group at Central Catholic-our band. '4Ever faithfulw might well be the band's motto and 'aloyaltyl' its watchword. At pep sessions, ball games, and assemblies its stirring music never failed to put us in the proper mood. Many take the band too much for granted. They just don't seem to realize how much sacrifice each member contributes to the making up of a good band. For the first time, the band and its alumni sponsored a Football Dance. which proved to be a huge success. They provided ballots and the school elected a 'cfootball kingw who reigned at the dance. The band raffle again proved a great success this year. The money netted was used for the general betterment of the band. orchestra. and glee club. BAND OFFICERS Rita Ann Fox .....,, .,,,,.... From the time of its establishment in G'4l',, it has improved rapidly. Dressed in white satin uniforms, the girls appeared frequently at bas- ketball games. Everyone enjoyed their performances immensely. At Christmas they took part in the annual Christmas program. Between the halves of basketball games this year Paul Ueber provided entertainment. 'cAn old hand at that sort of thingfl Paul literally brought the house down on numerous occasions with his rafter-throwing antics. Paul is a senior and has been twirling for four years. The twirling field offers unlimited opportunities to newcomers. In all probability the dawning of future years shall find an excellent and en- larged group of twirlers at C. C. It is our fervent hope that the corps. in which some of us are charter members. may survive through the years and become another traditional C. C. source of pride. TWIRLERS flefl to right! M. To the ideal of intelligent and self-sacrificing service our whole country has bravely and courageously dedicated itself in quest of that kind of Peace in which a better and nobler world can find the pattern of its destiny. Such a Peace. however, can only stem from the Prince of Peace. To the service of His Cause your faculty have consecrated their lives. ln behalf of that Cause your high school was dreamed into actuality. For the spread of that Cause you boys and girls are being trained in the Catholic idealism which down the years has fashioned the leaders that were the hope of the world. Prayerfully and confidently we look to you, our C. C. students of 1944-. to pledge your full measure of service to this Cause. SISTER MARY JOAN Department uf Science and Mathematics lcv. Into the capable hands of our faculty is placed the responsibility of the development of the studentis personality. Each Sister and Priest ably possesses the spiritual and educational background to prepare Catholic youth for his place in the world. lt is the Sisters and Priests who understandingly and earnestly mold the characters-the foundation is laid in the home, but the impression received in high school is carried away with the student. The boy and girl. having received proper spiritual and educational train- ing, will be ready to go forth and intelligently meet the problems and chal- lenges which will confront him in these chaotic times. The following colleges and universities were attended by the teachers of Central Catholic in preparation for their vocation of teaching and training Catholic Youth. EUAEH VUEBELE Early in February Central Catholic lost its coach, Joseph Voegeleuto the army. He is one of the 'three faculty members now in the service. Coach Voegele in his two and a half years at C. C. piloted the basketball team to a State Catholic Championship. He also saw the inauguration of track as a major sport at C. C. The school says. Good luck. Joe. and many thanks for all you've done for us. 66 V' X BASKETBALL SE SU Central Catholic's varsity this year may have no trophies or championships to show for its efforts, but not since the days of Ed Stanczak has an lrish team compiled a more impres- sive array of net victories. The final count was lT wins as against only 3 losses. At the very outset of the season, C. C. gave evidence of its latent power by blasting out a 70-16 win over hapless Ossian, the highest score ever made by a C. C. team. This was fol- lowed by victories over Auburn, Huntington Catholic, and New Haven. Then came the Central game, Handicapped by illnesses and facing a team that was strutting its state championship abilities, C. C. was forced to taste defeat for the first time. The letdown, however, was short- lived, as the lrish bounced right back into winning ways with successive victories over York- town, Hoagland, Berne. and lto climax it alll a win over North Side. By this time, C. Cfs team had become a smooth. driving, masterful quintet. Dunkirk was next to fall, and then FIRST ROW: Father Wirtz, Jack Danehy. Mike Lemish. Dick Plumb. Ed Tourney. and Leo lehl. SECOND ROW: ,lack Krouse. Bill Schneider, Bill Roberts. Jim Kartholl. and Bob Ness. , ,- .-ff , J another city rival, Concordia. That set the stage for the South Side Came, but the Green Archers, frequently rated among the ten best teams in the state, had too much for the Purple and Cold. Undaunted by this defeat, however, C. C. inaugurated another string of victories to Hnish out the regular season. Father Wirtz was in charge of the team now, and he piloted the boys to Wins over Elmhurst, Butler, Leo, New Haven, Decatur Catholic, and Bluffton. The sectional tournament found C. C. pitted against Harlan in the tough upper bracket along with South and North Side. The Irish managed to get by the Hawks, but the slow, tanta- lizing offense of South Side spelled the downfall of the lrish. Disappointing though the ending may have been, the varsity of 1943-44 certainly added another brilliant chapter to the basket- ball annals of Central Catholic. 67 jkey page fo in .W U5 Father Wifi: tells them 11011 Roberts unIa.res'? Beginning shortly after the Christ- mas holidays, two leagues were organized!-one for the Juniors and Seniors. the other for the Freshmen and Sophomores. Every home room that Could muster hve eligible players was represented in one of these leagues. Games were played during the noon hour, and a goodly Crowd of partisan fans was always on hand to Cheer their favorites. Competition in the two leagues was so keen that, when the season ended. five teams were tied for first place in one league and three in the other. These intramural games not only enabled those boys not of varsity Calibre to en- joy some reereationg but they also gave the students of C. The girls follow the regular standard girls' rules for the basketball games which is a change after observing collegiate basketball rules all year. Each home room in the school was represented by a team composed of eight girls who volunteered to sacrifice a part of their lunch period one day a week to bring honor to their respective home rooms. These games not only aided the girls physically, but they seemed to arouse and interest the boys also. Room 304 was the leading team of the senior and junior girls.
