The annual Central Catholic intramural tournament started on March Z4 and ended April 7. The custom of dividing the teams K into upper and lower brackets was again ob- . served. i - if TNT In the junior-senior bracket Room 312 de- : feated Room 314 in a double overtime game li to take the upper bracket championship while the sophomore Room 307 was the lower bracket winner. In the game between these two rooms to decide the intramural champion of the school the score was tied 12 all at the end of the game. During the 3-minute over- time the junior room turned on the heat and scored two baskets which the spunky sopho- mores were not able to duplicate. The final score was 16-12 in favor of Room 312. 1 The senior rooms were put out of the run- ning early by the exceptionally good junior teams. But in the surprising championship game between the sophomores and juniors the eventual victors were very much worried about the young sophomore team. The strong competition of the younger teams leads us to hope for greater varsity teams in coming years. D011 Bulxer. Left to Right. The winning team in the girls' intramural tournament was that of Sister Margaret Agnes' Room, 304. Kathleen Saxton and Ritt Vonderhaar, captain, were high scorers dur- ing the whole season through their own eiforts and the support of their fellow play- ers: Helen Vonderhaar, Genevieve Dehner, Juanita Hammen, Lois Kintz and Norma Freiburger. Many a noon the gymnasium was packed with enthusiastic C.C.-ers witnessing these human dynamoes in action. What a thrill to see those daring long shots skim through the net without even touching the rim! How wild the crowd went when the ball flew back and forth in well-practiced fashion from player to player to be tossed with agility and ease into the basket. So, Room 304. let us congratulate you on your fine display of ability and sportmanship and thank you for the thrilling entertain- ment you have provided us with in the course of the year. A. A. members were also busy. Their slogan was to help win the war by keeping physically fit. just from looking at the happy, fun loving girls full of vitality, no one could guess that such a serious motive was behind their activities. The membership this year was increased to approximately 200 girls under the able guid- ance of Miss Julia Heighway and Sister Marie Denise. i The first big event of the year was the volleyball tournament held in November. The seniors defeating the juniors. Wfednesday night befgore Thanksgiving, Bell's Rink was the scene of a gay, friendly G. A. A. skating party, and on Friday after Thanksgiving, a clear, brisk November day, 75 girls donned Page EPS hiking clothes, and began their hike to the Policeman's Country Club. To the many freshmen it was a new and exciting event but to the seniors it was an event always looked forward to and long to be remembered. At twilight, footsore and weary, they arrived home ready for a good night's sleep with the songs, laughter, and jokes of the day still ringing in their ears. The association is operated on a point basis for which certain insignia are given and it is only through El very active participation in sports that these insignia are gained. This year's members who have earned the coveted Big C are: Juniors-Betty Ellen Murphy, Betty Jean McNultyg Seniors-Kathleen Saxton, Rita Vonderhaar, and Helen Vonderhaar. Louisz' Szzeflzrr. For four years they have set the pace for their classmates, emerging with a record of :accomplishment that shall forever serve as a model for succeeding senior classes. .spafufaforian 2691 14 jAe eniorfi When a member of the senior class of 1943 finds time to reminisce over the four years he spent at Central Catholic High School, he will discover that his life has really been a full one. High school at last .... that utterly bewildered and lost feeling of the first week . . . g the intricacies of algebra and the declensions of the Latin noun .... vacation. Sophomore year .... that grown-up feeling of superiority .... never-to-be-forgotten experiments in the biology laboratory .... nine fleeting months of study. September .... realization that at last the upper- classman stage had come .... a few months of study, then .... WAR .... recuperation from the first shock .... the arrival of class rings .... the senior tea dance ,.,. the first bit of newspaper experience in preparing the April all-junior issue of the Sham- rock .... the thrill of the prom .... graduation of the senior class. 4 Supreme senior year .... endeavors to become a model for underclassmen .... specialized studies for war-time occupations .... second war-time Christ- mas .... the last high school retreat .... the junior dance ..,. the issue of the Shamrock .... realization that graduation is impending .... departure of many senior boys for college and the armed forces .... intensified work on the Echo ..,. the prom . . and then .... graduation. These four years have provided the senior of 1943 with many memories which he will retain throughout his entire life, but in these days of turmoil and of indecision, the senior who leaves through these portals into a war-ravaged and chaotic world will appreciate most of all the guidance received on preparing himself for a wholesome Catholic life. XY'hen they graduated they had no idea of what lay in the future for them. XVe sincerely hope that they are upholding the Christian ideals of manhood and wornanhood so well drilled into them during their high school careers. QAccording to correspondence received by teachers of this schoolj former students are thankful for their religious training. because it has helped them immensely in their military life where they see life as it really is. THE JU IOR The young men and young women who are the prospective seniors and leaders for the following year, entered C.C. just three years ago, with everyone eager to learn everything in one week. Wfhile perhaps that first week passed with no startling achievements-not so the remaining years. The pride we students have felt everytime the Central Catholic Band or Or- chestra have appeared has been the results of the efforts of many in the present Junior class. Delores Bailey, Carl Breman, Paul Detweiler, Rita Fox, Bob Hartman, Deveda Hebb, Francis Herber, Cecilia Murphy, Betty june Neuer, and James Vachon play in the Band, and Thereas f Emanuel, Rita Fox, Bob Hartman, Deveda Hebb, Jean Lamp, Cecilia Mur- phy, Betty Neuer in the Orchestra. ' Carrying the pigskin down the field were Bill Bachman, Jim Bogen- schutz, Jerry Henry, Richard Lerch, Mike Le- mish, Joe Maher, Paul Moyer and John Zwierko. But not for long did they remain inexperi- enced and the familiar expression, green, which is usually applied to Freshmen did not hold in this case unless it be applied to their Fighting Irish Spirit. As is usually the custom, the first activity of the Freshmen class as a whole was the election of class oflicers. Their good judgment was displayed when they elected the following: Pres., Roselyn Rockeyg Vice-Pres.,Jeanette Ueberg Sec.,Robert Glas- perg Treas., Tim Kelly. In order to assist the class officers in their duties these fine representatives from the home room were chosen for the Student Council, Patricia Sher- man, Roselyn Rockey, Marilyn Mulholland, Florence Murphy, Maur- ice Hebb, Jerome Grim- mer, Bernard Hatfield, Lois Hipskind. A beautiful May Altar is erected by the Legion of Mary every year and long remains in the memory of the hundreds of stu- dents who partake in the devotion. l ii ' ia 3 -A Ill Q V LEGIO ARI E The Legion of Mary, an international organization of Catholic men and women. was organized Sep- tember 7, 1921, in Dublin, Ireland. lts purpose was chartered as twofold: the personal sanctification of its members and works of charity. Mr. John Duff, the founder, felt the need of prayerful assistance, so he widened the membership of active members to include auxiliaries and adjutorians, lay people and religious respectively. Through the philanthropic efforts of a layman in California, the Legion of Mary was brought to the United States. Two representatives were sent from the home office in Dublin to this Country. During the past ten years they have given generously of time and effort to see this great work established in every dio- cese in .1 land dedicated to Mary. Because of his Zealous interest in Catholic action, Bishop Noll requested that the Legion of Mary be established in our high school. On October 7, 1939, the first group, consisting of four senior boys and their Spiritual Director, held their first meeting. The exemplary enthusiasm of these young men mag- netically attracted the attention of the young ladies of the school. By December of that same year one group, under the title of Our Blessed of Victory, now number 12 boys and girls. NVeekly meetings were held on Monday evenings at St. Augustine's Convent, under the guidance of Father Frawley as Spiritual director and Sister Catherine Helen as faculty advisor. It was during this first year that most of the traditions, now so intimately associated with the Legion of Mary, were established. Besides striving for personal sanctification, the members visited the sick at St. Joseph's Hospital, Irene Top l'0lL', Icff fo rigbf: jim Weigalnd, Catherine Armstrong, Marie Halley, Katherine Allgeier, Dolores Iohl, Betty Stier, Phyllis XValker, Marjorie Pcrrey, Ladonna Sorgen, Sophia Tryce, Tom Freiburger. To make their stay a little more pleasant, the patients received weekly, a copy of The Patients Weekly, published and edited by the members of the Legion of C.C.H.S. During the month of May the May Devotions were in charge of the Legion. During 1940-41, the Legion had as its faculty advisor Sister Lawrence, who replaced Sister Cath- erine Helen. It was during this year that the Living Rosary was introduced. The work of the Legion continued as in the previous year. New Members were admitted-new wine in an old bottle, new enthu- siasm to an old organization. Our present year showed the Legion of Mary taking undreamed of strides in advancing devotion to Mary. Because of a change among the faculty, Sister Margaret Agnes and Sister Marie Ambrose were ap- pointed as advisors. The year had just begun when Sister Mary joan, our principal, asked that two more groups be organized to take care of the ever increasing interest on the part of the student body for the Legion of Mary. A group of Junior girls and a group of Freshmen and Sophomore boys and girls took as the patroness of their respective praisidia, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and Our Lady of Provi- dence. Our work is ever the same, but our zeal and enthusaistic interest increases with each year. The Friday Masses of the students were offered for the missions in general and vocation in particular. Every Wednesday, home-room representatives received voluntary offerings for various missions both here and abroad, and sent copies of Our Sunday Visitor to the camps. The sale of Christmas cards was another project and after Christmas the students brought cards from their homes to be used by the Missionary Catechists in their work among poor children. Two successful stamp drives were held throughout the school. February found the students being tagged with red hearts, the offerings from which were sent to the Sisters of Providence in China who are interned by the Japanese. The Final activity of the unit was the medical sample drive sponsored in May. Carol Nusslaauuz. Page 62 ef? H D V' filling! 5? !7'H'? The journalism class, under the supervision of Sister Catherine Joseph, reached new heights when it brought before its readers a five-column, tabloid-size edition much larger and more complete in all respects than the Sbzzuzrorkx of previous years. Having become affiliated with the Catholic School Press Association, the paper received a very favorable commendation in the critical survey which was con- ducted by the N.C.S.P.A. among its member schools. A new feature of the school is the press room which not only insures better paper management, but also provides appropriate surroundings for the youthful literary craftsmen. The Sbanzrorfz is a means of Widening the students mental horizon and reflection. It also provides on outlet for the ideals of Catholic journalism. Though challenging the best efforts of all the staff, a great amount of the paper's success was due largely to the combined efforts of the co-editors, Patricia Kaliker and Jack Soshea. Since the primary purpose of the club is to instill a greater love and appreciation for the Latin language, the members have studied the prayers of the Mass and now realize with what fluency they can be translated. The activities of the club are not entirely of a business nature, however. At Christmas time, the members provided funds for a party for the Negro children of the catechism class. Several social meet- ings were held throughout the year to which representatives from the Caesar classes, or tribunes, were invited. Early in the Spring several tribunes were initiated and promoted to the rank of patricians. These members intend to continue their study of Latin next year. This great objective of the Central Catholic Faculty is presented in a threefold manner. Spiritually, mentally, and physically, the students are trained in such a way as will fit them for immediate and fruitful service during the crises now at hand, and later as loyal Catholics and true Americans in peace. Service, to the point of constant self-sacrihce, is exemplified in the lives of the faculty of Central Catholic. In appreciation we, the students shall endeavor to live the ' ' ht us, and thereby remain pleasing in the sight of God. Charles Poi11xuz'1'e. At the present time, athletics also provide sound conditioning for those who will soon be serving our country in some branch of military service. The three outstanding qualities to be derived from participation in athletics are self-control, sense of fair play, and the will to overcome all competition. Carl Grotbousc. Page S V . l r A N Closing his second season at C.C., JOSEPH VOEGELE has become more firmly planted in the i tradition of the purple and gold. Coach, as the boys 5 know him, plans the strategy and provides the extra push that carries hopes of all C.C.,s student body. i Page SX Frank Avila. PORT AT C. C. The major sports at C.C. enjoyed a fairly successful 1942-43 season. XVith the government more insistent upon physical iatness, the seniors and juniors have turned their attention toward competitive athletics so as to be prepared for any requirement set forth by the armed forces. Football and Basketball were the major sports played by Central Catholic teams this year, while Track is a newcomer that we hope will attract many followers. Football and basketball enjoyed a rather bumpy year, each sport having its high points and also its low points. The football season reached its peak between the North Side and Hammond games, while basketball commanded the most interest near the end of the season. Track is a new experiment but promises to have a bright future judging from the enthusiasm shown thus far this year. Golf and Tennis, two sports in which C.C. has consistently excelled, were dropped this year because of war conditions. Frank Avila. The mighty man in the athletic director's oflice is known by all as the gift from Garyu--FATHER GILBERT WIRTZ. This is the man who holds the teams together, sees to it that the boys have plenty of everything, and are well taken care of at all athletic '- - contests. Much more than meets the eye has been accomplished inxthis department since he has taken command. Frauft Avila. THE FO0TBALL EA 0 Huntington Marion Hammond South Side Central North Side ,,Aooo. The 1942 Football season gave the students at least a part of what they wanted-a tougher schedule, and a Win over a city school. Launched upon one of the tougher schedules that C.C. teams have faced, this year's team opened with an impressive 18-0 Win over Hunting ton. Cheered by the fact that next Week's opponent had beaten Hunting ton the Week before by only 20-18, they confidently slushed off to Marion in a driving rain, only to return with a determination to take revenge upon North Side for the 20-0 setback received at the hands of Marion. The fourth quarter explosion, that was a surprise to those in the stands but not to the players, brought glory upon this yearis team as the first in our school's history to defeat North Side, 26-25. Hammond was the next to fall 19-0 before the rampaging Irish. Then followed two dismal unothingu scores, 27-O at the hands of South Side and a SS-0 beating by Central. Central Catholic's 1942 football season was ushered out by a defeat, 13-6, by a team from South Bend Central Catholic. All things taken into consideration, Joe Voegele's team performed courageously and established a precedent that next year's team will have to meet. Frank Avila. ,f-Q., THE BA KETBALL EA 0 In the past four years C.C. has soared into the realm of basketball fame. Our shelves are lined with trophies from three State and two National Catholic Tournaments. The records show S7 victories and 23 defeats. Every student can be proud of this record, for it was his backing and true school spirit that inspired the victories and added the incentive necessary for a championship. At the season's beginning the Fighting lrishv went on a winning spree that was stopped by the New Haven Bulldogs in the seasons fourth game by one point in an overtime game. From that time on our career was checkered by both wins and losses, which were evenly distributed. At the season,s end a review will show that we won nine games of the eighteen played. Although not as successful as we might have been, this 'showing is not a discredit to Central Catholic in their first year in the I.H.S.A.A. Whether we have won or lost, at all times was shown a true Christian sportsman's attitude. . Don Brllsvr. Have you ever heard of DOC LETO, TOM SHOVLIN, and PHIL DWIRE? No? Ask one of the athletes if he has and he will probably give a look of incredulity and say, l'Of course. They're important men in my life. During the athletic season, they are the busiest little bees you ever saw. They could be compared to Murphy's 5 86 10 during the Christmas rush. To them, one complains for the jersey that fitted him like a balloon or the gym shoes that one could swim ing but in reality they keep the teams supplied with good equipment, repair and clean equipment, give medical attention and perform a hundred or so other jobs. Let's take our hats off to the student managers! Carl Grofbouse, '43 M0 OGRANI CL B Twenty-one athletes were awarded athletic monograms for their sports achievements dur ing the past season of football and basketb ll. Wh a en we see these sweaters proudly displayed by the boys, we immediately think of the time that they have given, and the hard work which they did in order to bring victory and glory to Central Catholic in 1943. Of the 21 who won monograms this year, only 6 will be here next year to continue their work in the field of sports as the others will our country, and we wish them all the luck in the graduate and probably go into the serious work of world. The athletic activity which these boys engaged in helped them build stronger bodies and taught them the essentials of sportsmanship. The two major sports of C.C., basketball and football, were led by two boys who were very capable. James Skevington was captain of the foot- ball team and Bert Keenan was the captain and high scorer of the basketball team. XVe owe very much to these boys for the thrills and entertainment which they provided for us during the past -season of basketball and football. They sacrificed their time and worked hard in order to bring glory to Central Catholic, 1943. Engvm' I. Lt'lIIIzll'f, '-H. This sound is the crunch of cinders and the thud of shot put. Rumors turned into reality when the first thinlies squad of C.C. took the held in competition with another city high school, Fort Wfayne North Side. Since that time our young squad has seen action in meets with South Side and Central of this city. Looking forward to the sectional track meet, Conch Joseph Voegele is depending on Ehinger and Ness in the 100-yd. dash-Neuhaus in the 220g Bachman in the 4404 Troutman, Hebb and Keith in the 880g Hoffman in the mileq Ankenbruck, Gotta, and Mathews in hurdlesg Hugenard in the high jumpg Beri- hower .ind Carl Biesiada in the pole vaultg Flanagan, Leto, T.
