Spiritual Activities Under time supervision oi our Spiritual Ad- viser, Fatimer Niurpimy, our religious curriculum imas been well rounded out. We imave en- joyed Fatlmer lVlurplmy's daily tallcs over time loud speaiier, and feel timat we lmave greatly bene- fited by timem. Time interest oi time students is lcept alive by time variety ot time topics given. Time instructions imave included suclm subjects as our lmeritage as cimiidren oi God, time correct attitude towards our neigimbor, and many otimer pertinent selections. For time montim oi lViay, Fatimer lVlurpimy as- signed to individual seniors a timree-minute tallc on time titles oi Qur Blessed lViotimer, timese tallcs to be given over time loud spealter. 0n time iirst lloor a beautiful simrine oi silver and blue was erected to Our Lady. A petition box was placed at time loot oi time Blessed Virginis statue for special intentions. it was not an infrequent sigimt to find students timrougimout time day lcneel- ing timere, absorbed in a imeart-to-lmeart tailc witim lxfiary. An annual retreat imas always been considered an important event in a Catlmolic imigim scimool. Certainly ours was time finest timat eiiort and time could produce. A lecture given by Mr. Craig of time Evidence Guild was timorougimly enjoyed by time student body. The plant hegan to appear ahove the ground in 1884 when a husiness course was added to the grade school courses. Still more growth toolc place in the next lew years when 1.atin and algehra were added lo the list ol suhjecls. Bishop Alerding was the gardener who hrought lorth huds on the plant. He arranged to use 1-ihrary as a Catholic school in 1909. On Septemher 7, 1909, the iirst classes were taught in Fort Vvayneis Central Catholic High School. From that day to this the Brothers oi Holy Cross have guided the destinies of many of Fort Vvayneys civic and professional leaders-from Father Girardot who graduated with the First class, to the memhers of the class oi 58. The State Board of Education commis- sioned Central Catholic as an accredited school in June, 1914. Ever since graduates have received recognition from many of the larger colleges throughout the Middle West, and their scholastic ranking has equalled or excelled that ot other high schools. The plant hurst forth in glorious hioom on January 8, 1959, when the new, modern huild- ing, erected hy Bishop Noll on the corner of Lewis and Clinton Streets at a cost oi nearly a hall million dollars, was dedicated. The old huiiding on Lewis and Calhoun streets still stands and over its door is a sign'-4 uCentral Catholic High Schooln-undouhtediy it will soon he razed, hut through the years to come the worlc done in that huilding will long stand-a challenge and a goal lor the stu- dents ol the New Central Catholic. Rohert Qvermeyer, 59. C. C. H. S. Class of '39 Qur Class ol '59 entered Central Catholic in the year 1935 and comprised the largest Freshman class at the time with an enrollment ol 96 students. As Freshmen, our class led the school lor the entire year on the honor roll, hy placing more students than any other class. Several memhers ol the class joined the ECHO '16 staff and participated in extra-curricular al- fairs. Qur class showed promise in athletics in George Bitler and James Boedeclcer. During the school year of '36-'37 class elec- tion, .iames Zulliger was elected president, Richard Steigmeyer vice-president, Richard Scheele, secretary, and Rohert Kearney, trea- surer. The class placed ten players on the re- serve haslcethall team and two students, Boe- cleclter and Xvestriclc on the varsity. Two hoys of the Sophomore class, James lVlcCarron and James Poinsatte toolc part in the presentation ol the dramatics cluh, The Pair ol Sixesfx Kenneth Thompson won highest Scholastic Honors. During the scholastic year oi 1957-1958, our class election determined that James Gril- fith was president, Roloert Kearney, vice-presi- dent, Roloert Allen and Thomas Maher, secre- tary and treasurer, respectively. R. Contant won the oratorical contest and Robert Over' meyer won the medal for the highest scholastic average. It was in this year that Central Catholic received a new coach, John Leviclci, who rose to tame in two short years. This year was also important to the juniors as it was in Qctoher, 1958, that His Excellency hrolce ground for our new Alma lVlater. Thereafter the school worlq was punctuated hy sounds oi construction as the worlc rapidly progressed. We hecame Seniors in June with a future in our new school to loolt forward to. However, the huilding was not completed for the upper classes until January, 1959. lxleanwhile we held classes in Lihrary Hall. VVhen the new huilding was ready. it hecame a melting pot for classes from the high school. academies, and commercial schools. The Senior class is composed of 70 hoys and 107 girls. The oliiicers oi the Senior Class are: Paul Brandt, president: lvlarjorie Lennart, vice-presi- dentg Richard Steigmeyer, treasurer: and Nlary Laughlin, secretary. The class achieved its share ol? scholastic success as shown lay the ten students who were memhers ol the Four-Year Honor Roll. They are: T. Maher, R. Contant, L. lxlinniclc, R. Kearney, K. Thompson. R. Qvermeyer, L. Schowe, R. lVlattes. J. Poinsatte and Leo Daugherty. The Senior Class was well represented on the ioothall team while Bitler, lVlaxwell, Gor- man and Boedeclcer represented the senior class on the State and National Championship Bas- lcethall Teams. But now we Seniors are standing at the threshold ol the new world, a husiness world. It is with some sadness, and yet with some joy. that we all turn our eyes towards Commence- ment. Leo Daugherty, '59. History of St. Augustine Academy Historians differ as to the exact date of the lounding oi St. Augustine Academy. some claiming the year 1845, others 1846. Julian Benoit in either of these years estalalished the iirst Catholic school in the diocese of Fort Nvayne and lorought from St. lV1ary-ol7-the- Xvoods the Sisters of Providence to conduct it. Only one Sister succumbed to the disease. though the scourge lasted lor some time. ln 1859 the old St. Augustine Church was replaced hy the present Cathedral and removed lo Clinton Street, where it was destroyed hy lire. The church hell, which had heen a gilt to Fr. Benoit lrom his native France, was then melted and later recast into two hells--one lor the Academy and one lor the Brothers, School. The new wing was added in 1885. This enlargement ol the huilding was necessary he- cause ol the increased enrolhnent. From 1840 until 1910 the grammar grades were housed in the Academy. ln 1921 the Academy was formally certified as a Commissioned High School hy the State Board ol Education. A two-year commercial course was intro- duced in the early ,20's. This was discontinued in 1933 when the secretarial courses were merged into the lour-year academic curriculum. Throughout the years, St. Augustine Acad- emy maintained the high standard ol culture and scholastic training established loy its founders, and has always pointed with pride to its splendid alumnae. Cn January 5 ol this year, the new Central Catholic High School was opened, and the Academy, which had seen ninety-two classes pass through its portals, ceased to exist as a separate unit. lls spirit lingers on, however, and the new school will continue to carry on and produce the same splendid results which the dear old Academy has produced in its long and glorious past. Peggy O'Connor, 959. The S. A. A. Alter a hectic ten months ol cutting up lishies, lroggies, and what-not in hiology class, we passed with dignity into the ranlcs ol the upperclassmen. Nluch to our surprise and sorrow, when we came haclc to S. A. A. for our Junior year, we found that, laecause of its size, our class had to he divided into two home rooms. Alter in- llating the class treasury, we were alole to hnance the anual Junior-Senior Banquet on St. Catherineis Day. The goods hequeathed loy the Seniors in their Last Will and Testament were received with mingled emotions. VX7e wrote Hfinisn to our Junior year with all the excite- ment attending the Senior Prom. Having advanced in age and wisdom, we were now considered lolity Seniors. As our last class project in dear S. A. On St. Catherineis Day we were enter- tained hy the Juniors. who toolc us to the cinema and afterwards to the Community Cen- ter lor refreshments. So, just as we have finally learned our loclcer comlninations, have hegun to ilind our way around the building. we realize that the year draws to a close, leaving us with mem- ories ol pleasant times and of splendid friend- ships formed. VVe have the honor ol loeing the first graduates of the new schoolg hence, we leave with the determination to lceep intact the ideals which have been held out to us during our school life. Margaret Vveloer, Y59. History of St. Cat Saint Catherine Academy has harhored the deep-set traditions and the lofty ideals of al- most three generations. Throughout its entire career, it has carried forward the standards of fidelity, humility, and spiritual amloition. From the day of its foundation. this old huilding has served the young Catholic girls ol the city in that it afforded them not only a place oi learn- ing, hut a place of learning to live. it has equipped them with a strong guard and a sense of righteousness which together have met and overcome their trials after graduation. in Septemloer, 1895, Reverend Father De- laney opened the new St. Patriclcis School. Within a few years, another building was needed for the girls who had completed the grade school course: hence, St. Catherine herine Academy Academy was founded. in i906 the liirst gradu- ating class passed through its friendly doors. From that time on, the Academy has always loeen on a par with the liinest high schools of the state of indiana. It has horne its share ol the cityis education with pride and prestige and has produced girls prepared to follow the dif- lerent vocations. As it stands today-an empty forsaken structure-it is not forgotten, hut in- stead it is held as a treasured memory in the hearts of all ol its graduates as well as in the esteem of many others. ln that memory St. Catherines foundation is that oi a splendid worlc of God, and its pattern is one that hears all the fruits and glories of an omnipotent Architectis Masterpiece. Doris lxflohl, i59. The S. C. A. As the year advanced, we loecame more serious and toolc our place at the top oi the lwlission supporters. Pug 0 ln all school drives, such as ticltet-selling and patron drives, we were always top-notch or almost so. Xve considered our reception into the Sodality a very splendid alltair-a tea, graced hy candlelight and the soft accents ot harp music. Very dimly I recall, too, a style show presented hy the sewing class, of which some of our class were memhers. The entire year proved to us that we wanted to spend more happy days similar to these first ones. As Sophomores we received less attention and more worlc. A Christmas trundle drive and a recurrence ol the patron drive and slcating party lcept us lousy. But we had our fun, too, as can he recalled from the weinie halce at Foster parlc. At the end ol the year we enter- tained the Freshman with a Latin play and the usual and essential refreshments. Of course, in our second and third years. too, our girls always figured prominently in So- dality and lvlission conventions and at the S0- dality School ol Catholic Action. As Juniors we acquired a very important feeling--and de- servedly sol The whole year was filled with exciting times and new responsibilities-four own slcating party, the hanquet and program, to honor the Seniors, oratorical contests, Christ- mas activities tor the poor and the Missions, and lastly an invitation to the Senior Prom. At last we reached the final year-four Senior Yearl Qur lovely hanquet and enter- tainment from the Juniors, our class dinner, and our theatre party graced the year. It was then that we realized the glory of senior life. Uur Sodality Christmas party and our class party brought much enjoyment to all. The fact that our spirit of Hgiveu surpassed our spirit of Htalcen was shown in all our years together, hut it was in our senior year that we topped all these activities for home charities and Mis- sions. The girls also devoted much time to oratorical contests, glee cluio recitals, and other school alztairs. So it was with that familiar Freshman tear mingled with sorrow that we said farewell to Saint Catherine Academy and came to the new Central Catholic High School. But, just during our brief stay here we have come to love it and to regard it as our very own. indeed our class is a fortunate onel Vvith such happiness and honor hehind, we are now an important element in a school which strives for perfection and success in all that it undertakes. These prospects were not enhanced hy the outcome ol the opening game, which Central Catholic dropped to Bryan, Qhio, I3-0. The Qhioers scored their two touchdowns in the sec- ond quarter, during which time they held the upper hand. C. C. recovered somewhat in the second hall and had controi ol the hall on Bryanis 15-yard line as the gun sounded. The Central game showed what the hoys could do if they put their minds to it. Although the game was finally lost, we helieve it to have been the hest game the irish played during the season. Playing without Diclq Steigmeyer, regular guard, the players fought to the last. A possihle tie was literally within the grasp ol a Cen- tral Catholic end hut lor the finger ol Talley, Centralis iieet hall- haclc, which harely tapped the hall out ol the outstretched hands of uRed Lerch just as he seemed to have it securely grasped lor a touchdown. This misfortune ended the last ol C. Cfs many second hall threats. Score: I3-0. page 52 CAPT. TONY COLONE Perhaps it would he hest to dismiss the North Side game without further ado. But for the sake of the record let us say that the Redskins went on the war path and massacred the irish 51-0. Central Catholic could not match the precision and power of the North Siders and lost their only chance to score when an opening sleeper play failed to cliclc. The next two games produced nothing in the way of consolation to the Central Catholic rooters. Portland was tied 0-0, while the Garret game ended in a 6-6 deadloclc. C. C. scored first in the opening quarter on a fifty-yard march with Bitler galloping over on an end run. Gn the last play of the third quarter Garret scored, evening things up and finishing the scoring for the day. Going into the Decatur game, the Central Catholic team and supporters were still ioolcing for their initial win of the season. They were not looking tor it after the game. The irish let out with a hang. the excess steam they had heen saving since the season opened. in case you have forgotten, the score was 59-18. it would require too much of your valuahle time to enumerate the many scoring opportunities. Suffice it to say that the irish, led hy Prough and Captain Colone, scored in every quarter. All players did well and prepared themselves tor the South Side tussel, due the next weelc end. The Central Catholic season reached its climax with the victory over South Side. With George Hitler, triple threat halihacic, on the side-lines, the irish outplayed the Archers much of the time. Both ot the Central Catholic touchdowns came in the third quarter, one on a plunge hy Prough and the other on a hloclced punt recovered in the end zone hy Stanczalc. The anti-climax was furnished hy the final game of the year with Central Catholic of Hammond. The irish struclc First in this first Sunday high school foothall game ever played in Fort Wayne, on a pass. completed and run 40 yards for a touchdown. However, the smaller, hut more aggressive. Hammond hoys seemed to gain strength at the game progressed in the gathering duslc, which seemed to symholize the ending oi high school competition for the seniors on the squad. The score was 21-6. So many creditahle performances were turned in during the course of the season hy the various memhers of the team, that it would he impossihle to single out any special one for commendation. How- ever, it is fitting that we congratulate Captain Colone for the excellent leadership he displayed. A word of thanlcs should also he given Brother Wiel for his tireless efforts in hehali of the team, and to Coach Leviclii for his excellent woric. The irish started off the season with a very close victory over a strong Ossian quintet who was later to lcnoclc off South Side in the State Regionals. Following this victory were similar ones over Huntington Catholic 39-23, Peru 48-26, New Haven 24-19, Portland 47-30 and Elmhurst 30- 24. In the New Haven game C. C. performed the notable taslc of holding their opponents scoreless in the second half. The Irish lost their first game against Central in a wiid battle, because of their inability to convert three throws. C. C. bounded baclc into the win column with a great win over the Catholic State Champs, Anderson, to raise the hopes of the Irish fans for the coming state Tournament. South Sides Archers were next, but they proved too tough for the purple and won a hard battle 44-34. Again the Down Towners rebounded and spent their wrath on a stout-hearted team from 1n- dianapolis-Cathedral. It was a very tight game, being decided only in the last minute when big Ed Stanczalc poured in five points. It loolced as if the lrish were going to have a win-a-game-lose- a-game season at this point, for again they were nosed out by the Decatur Commodores after giving up an 18 point lead in the last quarter. Starting here the Gaelic Gang went on a nine-game winning strealc only to be stopped in the last game of the season. 1n quiclc succession they bowled over Berne 42-16, North Side of Fort Wayne 29-18, Columbia City 47-40, Leo oi Chicago 27-17, Concordia High 52-27, Garrett 41-33, Decatur 38-25, Butler 39-23 and Auburn 29-24. in running up this string of victories, the Purple accomp- lished three notable feats. First, they avenged an earlier defeat at the hands of Decatur. Next, in the Columbia City game, C. Cds star pivotman, Ed Stanczalc set a new scoring record by drop- ping in 1G field goals and six foul shots for 26 points. Lastly, they brolce a lour-year-old jinx in city series competition and lcnoclied off North Side of Fort Vvayne. C. C. closed the regular season with a heart-breaking loss to their old rivals, New Haven. The irish sorely missed their big center Stanczalc in this game. He was hurt just after the Decatur game and was believed lost for the rest of the season, if not for the Tournament. C. C. played their llirst game in the beautiful new gym- nasium on January 22 against Leo of Chicago before a paclced house in which His Excellency, Bishop Noll threw up the first ball. State Catholic Tournament The irish now turned their efforts to the State Catholic tournament which was to be held in Fort Vvayne on February 24, 25, and 26. There were high hopes for success as C. C. had beaten tour of the participating teams. Going into the first game, however, the Purple were not over con- fident because of the further injury of Ed Stanczaics lcnee. Fort Vvayne drew the defending champs, Anderson, for their tirst game. The Irish must have been inspired in this game, for they gave the champs a terrific beating 65-34. Playing the best game of the year, the boys bombarded the net from all angles and never gave the Gaels a chance. Their next foe was the formidable Decatur Commies and they proved to be almost too much for the irish. The Purple won only by the scant margin of one point, 18-17, to move into the champion- ship game against another former victim, Cathedral oi indianapolis. The memhers of the team were as follows: Captain Jim Boedetcer--All State Guard: Jim was not the sensational type ot- hall player, hut when hrains, coolheadedness and a steadying inttu- ence were needed .lim was always there to lead his team to victory. George Bitter-Doctor King Sportsmanship trophy: A great toothall as well as haslcethall player and a hoy who played hard and well. When things got rough and tough, George was at- ways in there scrapping with the hest of them. Gene lxflaxwell-Loyola Hall of Fame: Big and capahie ot handling himself in any lcind of a game, Gene was a stalwart of defense and offense. He did a great joh of filling in at center during the state tournament and proved himself ahle to answer the call at the center post very welt. He was chosen to the Hall of Fame hy Loyola students as the hest atl around player in the Chicago tour- nament. Ed Gorman--All State Forward: Small, hut possessing a superahundance of speed, Ed played a consistent type ot hall all year long. He rose to great heights during state only to have his toot injured during the National Tournament. Bohhy Heiny--All State Forward: Though only a sophomore, Bohhy is one ot the hest players we have seen in a long time. He needs no further experience for he handles himself as though he had been playing championship hall all of his life. Ed Stanczatc-All National Center: A truly great center, Stan hore the hrunt of the scor- ing attactc all through the regular season until he was hurt. Had he heen ahle to play the whole season he certainly would have scored over 200 points. He came haclc in Fine style in the Nationals and once again hecame the high scorer of the team. Ed Dehner and Ed Klotz-The shoclc troops: When things were slowing down or the team was oft form, these two scrappy juniors were always ready to go in and start a rally. He was the one who had to malte all the important decisions and he alone built the great lrish squad. 01 course the man we spealt ol is John l.evic14i. Only in his second year of coaching, John did a marvelous join and created a team which had everything a truly great team should have. He worlced long and hard on this team and richly cleserves the praise which he has heen receiving since the end oi the season. This year has surely been a great one lor the lrish.
