li p T Ili? EIU U ect -M Yes, sirf, The candidate shambled away. l remarked to the candidate next to me in the locker room: 'Wllonder why the coach didu't tell hiin he was too late or something. Anybody could see he couldu't even make the eigrhteenth team. Ht-'ll blunder everything. l'll bet he docsn't know a football from a watermelon. The next afternoon l was late for practice. I hurried into my suit and laced with all speed toward the tield, fastening' on my headgear as l ran. liveryone was grouped over on one side ot the tield, with a clearing' in the cen- ter. Someone was evidently tackling the dummy or falling on the ball. and because the sight was unusually good. Coach lNhitteu had everyone watch- ing. lt's tlscar, of course, l tliougrht- tlsear diving on the ball and getting his long' legs tied into bow knots-or tlscar tackling the dummy, shutting his eyes and missing the swinging foriu by yards. Down would Oscar be on his funny nose. l was missing a lot of fun, l hurried faster. lt must be tlscar for l could hear his name called by the eoaeh. l was almost to the group when -Ping! The ball sailed into the air. l'p, np, and down the lit-ld, then over the goal posts for one of the lougesi kicks l had ever seen on Marietta Field. The crowd cheered: Atta boy! Uh baby-and how! Oscar-tlscar-Usear l'egl10wskil l stopped, startled. Surely tlscar didu't kick that ball! But there he was with Coach Whitten patting him on the back. The coach saw me. lie on time after this, George. To- day you missed seeing' how a player :should really run, pass, tackle and kick. Keep your eye on Oscar, lfeorgfc. lle can teach you plenty. G. Flannery, '31. Thumbs Down The trumpets blared fortl1 the an- nouncement to the assembled multiude. The Coliseum was crowded to capacity, the lflmperor with his retinue of no- bles and favorites were in their places and the signal had been given for the amusements to begin. The c1'owd buzzed and squirmed as it gradually settled down to quietness. The sun beat warmly U11 the clean, white sand covering' the tloor of the arena. I stepped forward, made my obeiss ance to the lflmperor, bowed to the elamouringr crowd who cared. not for me, but for the amusement l might at'- tord them in my tight. for life. From the ranks on the other side strode another soldier who also made his obeisance to the limperor and then turning, advanced toward me. An- other man like myself, destined to en- gage with me in mortal combat for no other reason than to satisfy the blood- thirsty lust of this vast assemblage and that august persouage. the limperor. NVe strode forward to the center of the arena, and faced each other with a grim look of mingled anxiety. sympa- thy, and hatred, for we knew that it mattered not to the multitude who won or lost. l'lither would be equally re- ceived as victor while as to the van- quished: No mercy. t'ompassiou had no place in the hearts of this multitude With a liual pause we advanced toward each other with cautious step, short sword and shield held ready for instant use. The soft tiukle of our light body armor could be heard distinctly in the stillness that always preceded
