As the 1959 Crusader takes its place among the annals of our Alma Mater, we hope that its pages may recall and remind each Centralite that the vigilant beacon. Star of the Sea, from her Watchtower, lights the way as he continues to journey toward the Eternal Shores. His Excellency The Most Rev. John L. Paschang Bishop of Grand Island Dear Students of Central Catholic High: Those of us who are famihar with the revelations made by our Blessed Lady to Saint Berna ' dette of Lourdes a century ago, and in more recent times to the pious children of Fatima can hardly escape the conviction that Mary is most anxious that we should adopt the practice of consecrating ourselves to her frequently, yea even daily. Since you have chosen Mary, Star of the Sea, as the theme of your current year book, The Crusader, and in keeping with the wishes of our Blessed Mother, allow me to suggest a little prayer whereby you may dedicate yourselves to her, the Stella Maris. This prayer has a noble history, although I suspect it is not too well known. It is touching in its simplicity. May I express the hope that many who may scan The Crusader will be moved to incorporate this act of dedication into their daily devotions. O Mary, Mother of the Incarnate Word and our sweetest Mother, we are here at thy feet as a new day arises — another great gift of the LxDrd. We place in thy hands and in thy heart our whole being. We will be thine in will, in thought, in heart, and in body. Do thou with motherly kindness form in us this day a new life, the hfe of thy Jesus. Direct and accompany, O Queen of Heaven, even our least actions with thy motherly inspiration, so that all may be pure and acceptable at the moment of the Holy and Immaculate Sacrifice. Make us holy, O Good Mother, holy as Jesus has commanded us and as thy Heart asks and so ardently desires. Amen. Yours in the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Star of the Sea, OUR PASTORS B,t. Rev. Msgr. Leo Keating, V.G. Pastor of St. Mary ' s Rev. Father Anthony Egging Pastor of Blessed Sacrament We pay tribute to our pastors, for without their aid the Cathohc Youth of Grand Island and surrounding areas could not have the opportunity of a Catholic educa- tion. Their fatherly care places at our disposal many needs necessary in our high school career. For their interest in our spiritual and intellectual growth we are very grateful. OUR CHAPEL The chapel is the very heart of our school. It is the place where refuge is sought in times of doubts, trials, and temptations. Here we can bring all our life ' s problems and Mary and her Divine Son will never fail us in the hour of need. ■ ' Ave Mana thy children are kneeling Words of endearment are whispered to thee Softly thy spirit upon us is stealing Sinless and beautiful. Band Our Superintendent Reverend James Naughtin Dear Graduates of 1959: A young convert recently remarked to me: One thing happily astonished me throughout my instructions and it has continued to amaze me very wonderfully during these two years of my Catholic hfe and that is the tremendous emphasis the Catholic Church places on the care and salva ' tion of a soul. So fundamental a thesis, is, for the convert, a constant source of wonderful amaze ' ment. In his brief statement, he simply states exactly the very purpose of the existence of the Cathohc Church — which purpose we know so well. Her schools, as an integral part of the Church, have that sole purpose of existence also. Seniors, if you leave Central Catholic with one thought alone namely, If I follow the di ' rectives of the Catholic Church, confirmed in me through my Catholic education, then, indeed, will my salvation be assured, then our efforts for you and your efforts for yourselves at Central Cath ' olic will not have been in vain. Remember always: You cannot go to HeU if you do what the Ca ' tholic Church tells you. May the guiding hand and protective mantle of Mary, your Star on your Sea of Life aid you in accomplishing this, and may God ' s Richest Blessings be upon all of you in the years ahead. Sincerely and prayerfully. .j ; ! f yy ' A yf, 2 Faculty As the Mans Stella sails on the seas, her course is steered by the captains — the Faculty. In order to avoid any shipwrecks, they sail out under the banner of Mary, Star of the Sea. As we seniors bid farewell to our teachers, classmates, and fnends we breathe a prayer of thanks for the happy, profitable years spent at Central Catholic High under the guidance of the Faculty. June 16, 1958 commemorated the 7?th anni ' versary of the Foundation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in the State of Kansas. In 1883 six 2,ealous Sisters, under the super- iorship of Mother Stanislaus Leary, traveled from their Motherhouse in Rochester, New York, to open a new mission field on the Kan- sas frontier. Today the Congregation numbers some 600. Reverend Mother Helena is the present Mother General at Nazareth Motherhouse, Concordia, Kansas. The work of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Con ' cordia now extends into six states and into eleven Archdioceses and Dioceses of the Catho- lic Church. The Sisters staff 25 elementary schools, 10 high schools and one senior college — Marymount College, SaUna, Kansas. In addition to these schools the Sisters of St. Joseph also conduct 7 hospitals, a home for the aged, and a diocesan charity center for social service work. SISTERS OF ST. DOMINIC, O. P. The first American community of Dominican Sisters in the United States was formed in 1822 by a small group ot young girls near Springfield, Kentucky. The infant community was guided and directed by Father Wilson, O. P., assisted by Father Miles, who later became the first Bishop of Tennessee. Mother Angela Sansbury was the first Mother General. Mother Mary Juha, O. P., is the present Mother General. From the Motherhouse at St. Catharine, Kentucky, she directs the apostolic work of her sisters in southern, eastern, and middle western states, as well as Puerto Rico.
