'72 DAYBREAK Dawns As Irish Temper Mellows Unlike previous years, Central encountered various changes. ln this year of DAYBREAK, our first question was faced, 'Would Central reopen in September, 1971 ? The Supreme Court decided Pennsylvania and Rhode Island were unconstitutionally giving aid to non-public schools. The Bishops faced the problem, 'lWould Ohio be next? The Bishops decided all Catholic schools would have a tuition of at least S100 or more. As a result we now had to pay 5375, one hundred and twenty-five more than the previous year. This created a new problem for Central students and parents. Over the protests of concerned parents and students, came one reply: l'l don't want to go anywhere else. This seemed to keep the 52-year-old building of Central Catholic High School open. On September 9, 1971, all the changes were just be- ginning to take place. Some could only be seen at a glimpse, but others were more dominant. Our newly revised dress code allowed girls to wear pantsuits and cullottes, but kept the tie in for the male population. Among the old faces at Central, were new coaches, new teachers, new classes, and most important, student- teacher relationships unlike any seen before. Our classrooms were turning into a meeting place, instead of a battleground. Both students and teachers learned. They realized they needed each other, if Central was to make it through this year, this year of DAYBREAK. fl Q- f i seg? 1
