Music Dept. tages 6West Side Stor ' l Black leather jackets emerging from a dark alley, the click of switch-blades triggering a rumble, and the faint sound of distant police whistles characterized the electric tempo ofthe 38th annual musical, West Side Story. Presented April 26, 27 and May 3-5 at the State Theatre under the direction of Mr. Gerald DePrisco and Mrs. EvelyneWeiher, thismodern version of the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet typified the constant conflict between rival street gangs of New York's West Side, the Jets and Sharks. Although the atmosphere foreshadowed a tragic ending, this musical production was brightened by brilliant dance sequences. Con- tributing a major part to the success of the show, these dances demonstrated American musical theatre at its best. Assuming the lead roles of Maria and Tony were Diane Woytowich '68 and David Kelley '68. Supporting lead roles were headed by John Seeman, Riff, Terri Augello, Anitag Mike Fitzpatrick, Bernardo, Mary Jane Demski, Any- body'sg Jan Olczak, Consuello, and Kathy Sheroian, Rosalia.
