Modern Americans portray Roman Legionnaires! The Cultural Language p Latin, designated as the cultural language, appeals to many Centralites because it is the fundamental course for the priesthood, and also for such professions as medicine and law. The tongue of the ancient Romans is offered to the student body as a four year course. During the first year, students are taught the basic principles of vocabulary and grammatical rules. Those partaking in second year Latin, master the more difficult con- structions Which enable them to translate Caesar's Gallic Wars. Centralites who seek a more thorough knowledge of this language study the orations of Cicero during the third year. Senior enthusiasts are able to engage in conversational Latin, as well as translate Virgil's Aeneid and the encyclicals of His Holiness, Pope Leo XIII. The study of Latin produces in young men and Women an understanding of eccle- siastical Latin, thus permitting them to better appreciate the Various liturgical prayers of the Church. Page 27

Fascinating Customs The Centralite who selects German as part of his curriculum is introduced by means of a two year course to the people and customs of a fascinating country. In the first year, by studying sentence structure, verb forms, and vocabulary, he becomes acquainted with the language. This knowledge is then applied to speech and to the translating of short stories which are often as amusing as they are instructive. In addition to this, the students learn Hsprichworts' or proverbs, such as Erst de Arbeit dann das Spiel ffirst work then playj, which are practical and applicable to their daily lives. Besides furthering their knowledge of grammatical forms, the second year students read longer stories, study the novel, learn to say the Hail Mary, make the sign of the Cross, and sing German folk songs. In these ways the student is able to understand and appreciate a country and people which have contributed so much to American heritage.
