Tom McCall, Dramatic Club secretary, addresses Elaine Baum- gartner, vice-president, and Binnie Harrison, president. Art of Speaking Public Speaking, a semester elec- tive, is maintained at Central to give seniors training in the art of speak- ing. Correct posture, clear diction, emphasis and stress, and variety of speech, are but a few of the funda- mentals learned by the students. Towards the end of the semester, the orators give a demonstration speech. in which all of the techniques learned are employed. In conjunction with the Public Speaking classes is the Dramatic Club. The Masquers, as it is officially entitled, has as its purpose the social development of each individual. For this reason Central maintains a four year course in English. Because this subject is a vital asset in the life of all students, it becomes one of the most important subjects in the school's curriculum. Its foundation, grammar and literature. is laid in the freshman and sophomore years. In addition to these. the juniors are taught the Hne points of a formal essay. plus an introduction to American literature to familiarize themselves with it. To supplement his curriculum, a senior may select Journalism, English Literature, or Public Speaking. Page 23
