Stritch saw the need of a high school for all Catholic boys and girls of Toledo . . . a high school directed, not by one teaching order but by teachers of all the various orders in the city . . . a high school which would imbue its students with a spirit fwhich Central's first principal, Msgr. A. Sawkins said, would bel deeper than loyalty, stronger than fidelity, loftier than patriotism, yet embracing and sublimating them all, a spirit binding students and staff into unity with strands of steelg a spirit as ancient as the martyrs and more lasting than the mountains, the spirit of Faith, onc, holy, Catholic, apostolic. His brilliant foresight making clear to him the necessity of such an institution, the Cardinal worked with unlimited fortitude and zeal to make his ardent desire materialize. On March 5, 1928, he turned the first spade full of ground for the new C.C.H.S. Today 2,000 boys and girls are participating in the results of his labors. They know he has taken -a personal pride in watching his school CCentral Catholic Highj develop in the principles he had in mind nineteen years ago.
