Each Jucceeding clam made a determined ejort to record accurately the euentx which conftituted ity Jenior year at Ceu- tral. Thi! .foon evolved into a fort of conzpetitizfe Jpirit. Wheit the time to hegin work on the 1944-45 puhlication arrived, we accepted the unwritten challenge of the clam of '44 and, with .vharpened pencilx and witf, dug in. We have endeavored to present, hy word and picture, C'Cl7f1'dl,.f growth, The informal photography depict typical Jcenef which characterize the Jpirit of Catholicifnt and Aniericanifnz prevailing in her hally, which all Centralitef are proud of and contrihute to. May each Centralite continue to improve the Jpirit and put Central Catholic High School on the pinnacle of superiority where it helongc. A5 our jinal thought, we, of the clan of '45, exprexf the sincere5t hope that the next Centripetal will he puhlifhed in a world at peace. Swiftly putting their plan into action, they set down a preliminary sketch, the Old Medical Building on the corner of Page and Cherry Streets. In 1928 they were able to submit a tentative blueprint. During those years which preceded the completion of this drawing, they deftly added stroke after stroke to the plan with their drawing pencil of spiritual and financial aid. Today they are applying the final touches to their masterpiece in order that the plea of the bishops, Every Catholic student in a Catholic schooln, might be fulfilled. We, the seniors, owe these craftsmen an additional debt of gratitude for our primary education, the firm foundation they have designed to aid in our quest of higher learning. Therefore, it is only fitting and proper that we dedicate this, the Silver Jubilee Issue of the Cen- tripetal, to the architects of Central and of our charactersh- our PARISHES. 15,1 'km N. Thus a student who has received no religious training has an incomplete character. In such an education a great factor is missing which cannot be substituted by any other. In Central, the members of the faculty endeavor to prepare each student for his future life in a world filled with temptation. How well each survives is a test of the durability of the cornerstone placed in his character. fa as-sa f,.+,s-if Alice Brady Donald Bleim Conrad Bogusz Alvin Bohland Melvin Borucki Guatril of Honor 1-2-3- Guard of Honor 1-2-I9- Guard of Honor 2-It-4. With this background, the junior draftsman details and assembles a project of some proportions4perhaps an aeroplane, an automobile motor and chasis, or various types of internal and external combustion motors. This year the juniors are occupied with a double-action, direct drive, steam powered, water-pump. Superior efficiency and power together with economy, makes steam power a much more interesting study than internal combustion. Civil engineering is studied by the senior drafrsman. Plates were made, this year of a variety of properties, in and near Toledo. Besides this, a number of profile and differential leveling courses were made. Several problems were completed in the com- putation of areas by the ingenious method of latitudes and double meridian distances. At this time they gleaned that they were to be the twenty-fifth graduating class of Central. They also learned that they would be the first class to complete four years with the new Principal, Rev. L. Harrington. For this reason he looked on them as his special proteges. With this in mind, they began their years of apprenticeship at Central, determined to achieve an outstanding record. Now, as seniors, they can look back at their record, confident that they have fulfilled his expectations. -The seniors wish to express their gratitude to an excellent faculty for the guidance they received and, on leaving Central, they promise with God's help to do their best to bring honor to their Alma Mater. gyracluafion elarefienfafiued Valvdi1'Iuriun Salutuloriun DONALD ANDERSON NORMA VELKER Ulm .fglolaren ficefi CLASS OFFICERS Preridwit ..,.......,...,,.................,,,Y,...7,.,, ,Arthur Bok Vice-Preridelzl .,.,... .,..,. After three years of diligent study and fine co- operation, they are now prepared to take over the task as veteran builders. Throughout the year these apprentices have shown their ability. Possessing a keen competitive spirit they have led in a great number of the school's campaigns. Much of the credit for their outstanding showing must go to the four capable class officers who have striven to place their class on top in all activities. . We peer through the keyhole to perceive the bee-like activity of the Student Council. Under the able supervision of the Rev. joseph D. Shenk and Sister M. Eventia, S.N.D., the 0ff1cersfBob Etzel, president, jack Murnen, vice-presidentg Gerry Longmore, secretary, and Pat Ryan, treasurer-gendeavor to lead their classmates through a successful year of extra-curricular activities. The personnel of the executive committee is composed of the four Student Council ofhcers, the senior class officers, the underclass presidents, and the officers in charge of activities, traffic, and publicity. The general assembly includes all class officers, representatives from each conference room, and honorary members. The Student Council has the unique purpose of upholding ideals of Central by conducting programs for the betterment of school life. Taking in stride the social events of the year, the Student Council also concerns itself with the improvement of the students, intellectual lives. The social program this year included several dances, a skating party, the annual boat trip, Tag Week, and Color Day. Courtesy Week and the Study Campaign were a part of the cultural program. Included in its undertakings are the War Chest drive and the Catholic Chronicle Campaign. M,l'l'll0M,:5 00141 P 9 jlze .gjulaeruifiord Football Coach Supervising the activities of the rumpus room , Mr. Patrick McCarty has, in his two years at Central, proved his ability as a great football coach and a true friend of the stu- dents and players. This year he, together with he formed, present the school with its fi t victories lJqrQyWaite i High. V ffhats are off to MV' Mfcafli' P for his fine work. We extend a sincerebdish that he may remain at Central as Director of Athletics for many years to come. the crack football sq Basketba Mr. Harold Mouch ll Coach in his first year as Central's head basketball and baseball coach gave evidence to the' school that there need be no fear for Central's future in these sports. During this period he developed two teams whose work showed they had that spirit of which the school may well be proud. In football, Mr. Mouch, a graduate of Central in '40 and later M11 Molzcla a star of the '43 Dayton team, produced one of the finest backfields i Lightweight Coaches n the city. Hanging from the wall in the Athletic Known to many Freshmen as a fine teacher, Office, is a portrait of that great man-builder, Knute Rockne. The coaches at Central try to follow Rockne's standards to build the sportsmen of this school. Of these coaches, Father Fuqua sets the closest parallel to Rocknean principles. Coaching the light- weight squad is one of the toughest assign- ments. Considering this, and the fact that the lightweight squad landed second spot in the city football league, it is safe to say, Father Fuqua is a capable builder of men. Kev. Fuqua Father George P. Shugrue has also won the deep admiration of the football and basketball players. Teaming with Father john Fuqua, Father Shugrue did wonders I with the lightweight football team. The boys worked hard and were really proud to hear him say at the end of the season, Well done, fellows. Besides his amazing football coaching tal- ents, Father turned out a fine freshman basket- ball team which Hnished high in the city league standings. Rev. G, P. Slarngrue Alfred M cCarthy Central's lightweight football team this year was led through praiseworthy football season by Irish McCarthy. Though a new- comer on the Central coaching staff, Irish is well known to stu- dents and fans through the many laurels which he won under the scarlet and gray colors during the foo.ball seasons of 1928 and '29, In his last year, he was unanimous choice for all-city quarterback. Irish is indeed a valuable ad- dition to our coaching staff. We are certain that he and his teams will bring glory to Central in fu- ture years. Page 110 Dr. Joseph A. Muenzer Dr, joseph A. Muenzer has, during the past year, proved his ability both as a friend of Central and as a capable physician. Following the Libbey game, a badly injured team pre- sented itself to 'iDoc for patching up . The results of his careful treatments were shown the following week in the Hrst defeat Waite re- ceived at the hands of Cen- tral. Don Reilly Successfully leading the Irish track team in its first con- centrated year of the sport was Coach Don Reilly, the most recent addition to Cen- tral's coaching staff. Don, a familiar figure to Centralites through his exploits on the gridiron and cinder paths at DeVilbiss, has, since his ar- rival at Central, developed numerous outstanding per- formers and made the team a powerful factor in the league race. We, of the stu- dent body, extend a sincere welcome to Don and wish him great success in his coaching career. D GLENNON FLYN N P HOOD S DHSSEAUL g . ww 9 EA K A X H, ma nam? The Waite Game Twelve thousand spectators sat in awed silence while the huge clock on the score- board slowly ticked off the remaining seconds of the game, for they realized that below them, on the field, history was being made. Suddenly the referee's gun went off and several thousand madly cheering fans poured onto the playing field. Yes, the jinx had finally been broken, the fighting Irish of Central Catholic had, after fourteen years of determined but fruitless attempts, beaten the Waite High Indians in football. No Hukey victory was this, either, as the final score of 28 to 12 indicates. The Irish of '45 indeed lived up to the tradition of all Central teams, that is, that each team do just a little better than the team of the preceding year. Central entered the game with the odds down , for the squad was sadly crippled. Starting as predicted the Indians surged to a 6-O lead in the first quarter. In the second quarter, however, the fighting spirit of the Cherry Street lads brought them roaring back into the ball game. A snappy Molnar to Pinciotti pass, a perfect conversion by juhasz and the Irish were in front never to relinquish the lead. In the second half the team continued into steamroller offensive as Pinciotti scored twice and Bayer once. jupe Juhasz completed a perfect evening with three rifie conversion attempts. Thus, Central Catholic swept on to its first football victory over Waite High. However, in these lines cannot be told the story of the linesmen, of their firm determination and fighting spirit, of the undying faithfulness of the thousands of alumni and fans. To these unsung heroes much of the credit for the victory must go. In the second game of the year with Waite, Central again started slowly, spotting the Indians' 14 points. With Delp and Molnar contributing standout performances the team repeated its previous victory by a 34 to 21 score. Flynn 4, X jfidufed To A Gallant Leader A familiar sight to all Centralites is the Irish grin of Francis Flynn, Central's football captain for this year. However, a much different aspect of this fighting Irishman was given the opposing teams who usually viewed Franny from a prone position. Never outdone in fight and determination, Franny was, however, at all times a true sportsman. In many games this stalwart son of Central provided the necessary spark to bring the team to victory. Franny will be sorely missed next year by the team and the school. All wish him success in everything he attempts, Football Schedule DATE SCHOOL THEY WE Sept. 15 ........ ....... Jupe, knee joint twisted out of place in the 1943 football season, was told he'd have to wear leg braces in order to compete in '44. An ordinary player would have given up here, but not Jupe. Donning the leg braces before each game, juhasz still proved one of the most accurate placement kickers in the city, Field general of the Fighting Irish, Jupe led the team to pay dirt many times, then he'd go on to kick the extra marker. In whatever occupation Jupe chooses, he'll be successful because he has the key to prosperity-perseverance. Page 116 ff at - . J. juhasz J JUHASZ. A 'RUNIER G il.1s011b111qg ....... This team, coached by the Rev- erend George Shu- grue, also engaged in five non-league encounters, taking four and dropping one. As next year's lightweights, much is expected of these boys. Page 122 Lightweight Basketball Under the capable direction of the Rev- erend john Fuqua the lightweight bas- ketball team turned in a highly creditable season, finishing in a tie for first place in the city league. These boys who completed the sea- son with the record books showing 18 wins and 3 losses, give great promise for next year's var- sity. Faithfully reporting every night, these lads performed the many unpleasant tasks required to maintain the various teams. Wflien the going was tough, with a cheer- ful remark and a little service, they boosted the morale of the players and enabled them to obtain many victories for Central. The managers truly deserve the praise of the entire student body. Track Team Yea 'jf Sig, '- 95 E Q Mm- : 1 gg: I 5 Y . if ,M sf? is ' G if Top row: Coach Don Reilly, W. Leonhardt, D. Drury, D.
