eliginus Q9rhers epresenteh at eritrzil In order that the students might become better acquainted with the origins of the religious orders, a brief history of each order teaching at Central is presented below: Ullie Sisters nt utre fame Towards the end of the French Revolution, Blessed Mother julia Billiart founded the order of the Sisters of Notre Dame. After establishing a number of educational institutions in France, Hol- land, and Germany, two hundred sisters, the first group of state examined teachers, entered the United States in, 1872. Among the first foundations in the city of To- ledo was the opening of Saint Mary's School. In 1925 the Community of the Sisters of Notre Dame in Toledo became a Diocesan Provincilate. The commercial, art, and Latin departments of Central have been under their supervision since the beginning of the school. miie Sisters nf St. Qirainris fSylvaniaj On the feast of the Immaculate Conception, 1916, the Sisters of St. Francis of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, whose Mother-house is in. Rochester, Minnesota, established a new Founda- tion in the diocese of Toledo, Ohio. The action was taken at the urgent request of the Most Rev- erend joseph Schrembs, then Bishop of Toledo. Mother Mary Adelaide was appointed General Su- perior of the new Foundation. Education of youth and the care of the sick constitute the work of the Sisters. In addition to their work in parochial grade and high schools the Sisters are represented in the faculty of DeSales College and Central Catholic High School. miie Qltirsuline uns Synonymous with the name Ursuline is the word Hrst. For this order, the first teaching order for women in the Catholic Church, and founded in 1535 by St. Angela Merici, in Brescia, Italy, was the first one in the Western Hemisphere. The five Ursuline nuns who came to Toledo in. 1854 from Cleveland were the pioneer teachers of the diocese. Mother des Seraphim was first superior. In addition to numerous parochial grade schools, St. Angela Merici Hall, St. Ursula's Acad- emy, Mary Manse College, the only college for women in the diocese, and Nazareth Hall, a military school for boys, are under their jurisdiction. The departments of English and Home Economics are under the direction of the Ursuline Nuns who have been associated with Central since its foundation in 1914. Ulhe ,Sisters nt glttierrg The Sisters of Mercy, founded one hundred and twelve years ago in Ireland by Mother Mary Cath- erine McAuley, came to the United States in 1843. Ten years later the nuns took up their duties at Central and have been teaching here for the past eighteen years. The primary purpose of the order is to perform spiritual and corporal works of mercy especially in the promotion of schools and hospitals.
