Jfnremnrh IN OLDEN DAYS the troubadours sang to knights and ladies of the Quest of the Holy Grail. They sang of valor and strong hearts, of noble hopes and high ambitions, of purity and charity and they sang of broken faith and cowardly surrender. For the Grail was but a symbol of true wealth, the Pleasure of the Christ-King, and its Quest the story of loyalty and faith. Hard and tortuous is the path of true virtue and beset with snares and dangers. Nor skill nor arms alone avail, but fervid faith and clean hearts. Boasting knights with much ac- claim ride forth on the Quest and seek the Grail in flowered meadows which hide the mire of sin. True Knights choose the rough road and ride on through battle and tempest to reach beyond the horizon the Christ-King with the Grail. Boys and girls on the glorious morning heights of youth look out over the glittering meadows and the distant mountains of life and know that some- where over beyond the horizon stands with the Grail their Christ-King. To dis- cover the difficult road and to hold it steadfastly even to the Feet of their King are their true endeavor. The poet is right and the world is wrong, for true bravery and heroism lie hidden in the common trials of life and through these alone may we struggle and combat on to the realization of life's true purpose. Weaklings and cowards yield to the hardships of the way: only true men, worn but faithful, kneel for the trophy. The Great White Shepherd of Christendom stands this year amidst his rejoicing children at the golden milestone of his priestly life. What a story in these fifty years for youth! In the morning of his days bravely in the Light of Faith he went forth for life's real trophy. Today as the evening shadows gather about his head he travels onward amidst difliculties and trials to the goal. The world looks on this Knight of Christ and learns again how full the years may be and how noble is the triumph of virtue. Even now in the golden rays of the setting sun his banner waves in the breeze and across is written the motto of the Anointed Soldier of the Christ-King: PAX CHRISTI IN REGNO CHRISTI. 1-SAMUEL A. STRITCH, DD., Bishop of Toledo. eight
