Luden became Central Catholic High, through the efforts of Father William Hammeke, rector of St. Paul Parish. As the years progressed, the student popu- lation soared from an initial seventy-five to the present enrollment of over eleven hundred. Following the dictates of supply and demand, the school needed more space to accommodate the ever increasing number of students. Addi- tions were made to the main building in l94l, 1945, and l955. But, when the horde of teenagers de- scended upon the Bon Air mansion this past September, not even that stately building could withstand the attack. To alleviate crowded conditions, the administration deemed it neces- sary to open an annex at Twelfth and Spruce. This annex houses six of the freshman classes and has become an integral part of Centrals life. How rustic! 7 'f if N ' ff :. 5l:. . gn emoriam As We prepared for another school term, our beloved Cardinal Archbishop, lohn Cardinal O'l-lara was called from this world of space and time into the timelessness of eternity. During the years in which His Eminence, lohn Cardinal O'l-lara presided as spiritual leader of the large archdiocese of Philadelphia, all felt the influence of his magnanimous character. Espe- cially dear to his heart were the teenagers entrusted to his charge, Numerous elementary schools, several large diocesan high schools, as well as schools for exceptional children stand as a lasting testimony of his desire to spread the kingdom of Christ. ln his work, Cardinal O'l-lara fulfilled perfectly the description penned by Pope Pius Xl of the exemplary priest who both by vocation and divine commission, is chief apostle and tireless furtherer of the Chris- tian education of youth. 8 l.OCQSdI'L oLwQClC!QI' After the death of His Eminence, Iohn Cardinal O'Hara, the burden of Administrator of the large archdiocese ol Philadelphia fell upon the Most Reverend Ioseph McShea. On February 15, it was announced that the diocese ot Philadelphia had been divided and the new diocese of Allentown created. The Most Reverend loseph McShea was named the first bishop of the area which includes Berks County. Bishop McShea spent most of his boyhood in Philadelphia, attended West Philadelphia Catholic High School, the seminary of St. Charles Bororneo, and was ordained a priest in Rome in l932. He was elevated to monsignor in 1948 and to bishop in 1952. His Excellency is already a familiar figure in this area, as he has been here many times to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation. 9 The Right Reverend Monsignor Edward M. Reilly, l.C.D,, LL.D. gcfucators The Right Reverend Monsignor Edward M. Reilly is charged with the responsibility ot the entire educational system of the archdiocese. Last May, the Reverend Edward T, Hughes was named assistant superintendent and in September Central- ites took an added interest in the diocesan office when a faculty member - Reverend Francis B. Schulte-joined Father Hughes as assistant super- intendent. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has every reason to be proud of its diocesan school system and its leaders whose broad scope of vision and attentiveness to detail have insured a thorough education for the Catholic youth of the area. Monsignor Reilly's tremendous interest in Cath- olic education, along with his very gracious per- sonality, show his dedicated spirit to this worthy cause, and for this we are deeply grateful, His work in encouraging and furthering Catholic edu- cation has established for him a place of respect and admiration in the hearts of faculty and students alike. lU The Reverend Edward T. Hughes. Flssistant Superintendent of Schools The Reverend Francis B. Schulte, Ftssistant Superintendent ot Schools youth Despite his pastorate at St. Pauls and rector- ship at Central Catholic, the busy Reverend Henry f-luesman finds time to open our school year with Holy Mass, to distribute report cards to student parishioners, and to act as speaker at various religious and civic functions. This zealous priest undertook added responsibility when on April 25, he was appointed to the office of Diocesan Super- intendent of Schools. The graduating class extends heartfelt appreciation and gratitude as he assumes this new office and honor, Father Huesman and Father Leichner got right to work after their new assignments had been announced. ln his years as principal at Central Catholic, Reverend Raymond Leichner has watched the enrollment soar over the thousand markg but he has managed, somehow, to find time and place for every student. Wholly devoted to his vocation, Father keeps a watchful eye on study habits, dis- cipline and spiritual progress. As assistant super- intendent of schools in the new archdiocese, Father will have great added responsibilities. For his un- tiring efforts to keep Central on top the entire student body expresses its sincere thanks, Reverend Henry I, l-luosrnan Reverend Raymond I. Alter touring various industries of Reading, the teachers enjoyed an informative program on the development of Berks County. Conventions, symposiums, and every type of educational gathering counted members of Cen- tral's faculty among those in attendance, Members of the science department traveled to Scranton to attend a Science for the Day program. Later in the year joined by the teachers of the mathematics department, they attended the Pennsylvania Cath- olic Roundtable of Scientists and Mathematicians. Playing host to various groups, Villanova Univer- sity was visited by Sister Marielda attending the Library symposium and Sister M, Alethia and Sis- ter M. Magdelaine who participated in the annual press conference. Gregg sponsored a Business Workshop at Temple University. Commercial teach- ers gleaned many valuable hints from this excur- sion. Magde- laine as moderator and Helen Chomyn as editor-in-chief, this years staff began its search for a suitable theme. Having deliberated carefully, everyone agreed on the choices'- No man is an island. ln the autumn amid the confusion which permeates the first few weeks of school, initial steps were taken to organize our annual. With the hard fact of a March dead- line before them, the staff devoted many after school hours to the compilation of all the necessary pictures and writing. Since every yearbook has a financial side, the senior class worked feverishly to meet the quota to make publif cation possible. Hewrites, fast typing, captions, and missing pictures became so usual that the editors assumed an attitude of quiet desperation. But, somehow, all obstacles faded, and a completed Centralma inevitably greeted the end of the school year. Proud of the All-American and All-Catholic ratings of past books, the staff has tried to make Centralma, 1961 live up to its heritage. lt's time for a refreshing pause, H. Stephens, B. Mulligan, associate editor, P. Kearney, and M. Freeman all agree. 25 The thought of mailing the completed book brings smile to D. Rambo, M. Purcell, I., Distasio, and S. Cooney. As the band struck up a peppy tune, fancy stepping majorettes lent a pleasant air to half-time by their expert twirling and occasional designs on the green turl ol Saint Lawrence Stadium during the football campaign. This year saw another innovation added to the music department. The marching band sported ci signal corps composed ot freshman and sophomore musicians under the leadership of Margaret Flemming. This aided in making the 1960-61 band the largest in Central's history, Central's snappy band didn't just happen The boys and girls in this department give up much tree time to master the intricacies ot marching. Every Wednesday eve- ning during the summer vacation, after school hours during the regular school year, and even holidays are devoted to the all-important practice periods. Adequately equipped laboraf tories and the efficient teaching of the Sisters of Saint Francis gave students ample opportunity to become familiar with the practical aspects of ex- perimentation. This year a cloud chamber used to detect radiation and a Van deGraaf generator were added to the science department. The biology lab now boasts of special blinds which permit the use of the microprojector in the room. Also new this year was the Traveling High School Science Library which is sponsored by the National Science Foun- dation. Further reading material was provided by the Current Science and Aviation and the weekly Science and Math. Projects for the science fair kept students well occupied. Directed by the Bernardine Sisters, Centralites plotted graphs, solved for x, and were initiated into the realms of higher mathematics. The mathematics contest, sponsored by the Society of Actuaries and the Mathematical Association of America, gave upperclassmen an opportunity to test their skills. Despite the national interest in the presidential campaign, American history students took time out to prepare an imaginative P. A. S. program to mark Pennsylvania Week in late Oc- tober. During the course of the year, P. O. D, en- thusiasts studied local industries tor a close look at the American competitive enterprise system. Future jury members were initiated into court pro- cedure by a visit to the courthouse to watch a case being tried. Poster projects and the translation of tairy tales provided an interesting study for French students. Song tests held on Fridays during the year added a bright note for German scholars. Spanish pupils made a detailed study of some ot our Latin Ameri- can neighbors and learned to understand and en- joy their customs, Faithful followers of Caesar worked diligently, hoping to reap rich rewards in the Auxilium Latinum contest held in the spring. Sport enthusiast Mike Daley proved a valu- able asset to the basketball five, While Tom Ble- kicki, Larry Fox, and Ioel Purcell claimed positions on the varsity football team. Diane Trout starred in girls' basketball. Scholastically, the Iuniors aimed high, too. Since her poem was selected as the best submitted to Hillside Echoes for the literary edition, lngeborg Endter received a gold pin. Proving his adeptness with the pen Thomas Wright won the position of associate editor on the school paper, and Bda Schifalacqua provided many of the captions for the 1961 Centralma. December Zl marked the appearance of class rings. Then Iuniors voted for their prom chairman and began preparations for the gala evening ol February 4. Sophf omores could also claim a fine representation among the rnajorettes and band members Scholastically, too, sophomores were eager to shine. Articles from this class were printed in the National Poetry Anthology, the National 'Essay Anthology, and the February issue of Hillside Echoes. Larry Polinsky added lustre to the sopho- more crown by his excellent science project on weather, Report assemblies found a number of sophomores receiving first and second honor cards which testify to their efforts at study. Whether cutting up a frog in a biology class or viewing Robert Louis Stevenson's TREASURE lSLAND in English class, the sophomores had a busy life at Central as they prepared for the future. During the early months of the school year, the greenies stood in awe of Freshman Day, but they weathered their initiation admirably. A new feature for the freshmen at the annex was the trek up the hill to attend assemblies at the main building. Many annex students also made an after school trip to take advantage of the facili- ties in Central's up-to-date library. Freshmen vied with upperclassmen for honors, and amazingly enough, came out on top. ln every drive and campaign, freshmen made a noteworthy showing. At report assemblies it was evident that freshmen were well in the lead. Boasting of the largest class in Central's history-38l strongethe freshmen also claimed a record number of first and second honor cards, Section ZA had the highest number of honor students for the first two report 2:15. Clemente into action with a new play. pposition Qlastec! A bevy of hopeful candidates reported to St. Lawrence Field in August to initiate another round of the pigskin sport. Head coach Steve Hydock, Cardinal touchdown tutor for the past ll seasons, with his assistant Andy Hydock, promptly proceeded to Whip together a co-ordinated squad. Graduation of l4 letterrnen compelled the entire team to be revamped. Fortunately, inclement weather caused a seasonal delay of two weeks, giving Coach Hydock the precious time he needed to make adjustments, and throw the Central Catholic gridiron machine into high gear, The Cardinal line, although outweighed by almost every opposing team, more than made up in spirit and determination for what it lacked in size. The crashing defensive line was so incredibly stingy, that it allowed its foes a total of only 64 points all season. This was a major factor in determining Red and White victories. Since passing was kept to a minimum, the remarkably swift and deceptive backfield used a thundering ground attack to spear- head its Way through an opponent's line. Grinding out yard after yard, Cardinal backs totaled an impressive 238 points in nine games. When Winning, Central usually rolled up scores which humili- ated the defeated team. However, the major disaster in the 1960 campaign was a Thanksgiving Day loss to Bishop Kenrick which crushed Central's hopes for league honors, The mighty Cardinals finished the season with a lordly 7-2 log. 86 Mike Raszkiewicz Dan Calnan Halfback-Captain Center Mike Clemente Ted Glembocki Halfback Halfback Central-St. Pius X The Hydockmen unveiled the 1960 season opposing St. Pius. Although on the short end in yards gained and the first down department, Central conquered the Saints to the tune of 25-6. M. Central-Nativity B.V.M. Nativity became the victim of the Cardinals' home encounter with a sound 42-6 victory, Each stanza saw the Hill- roaders hit pay dirt with a 20 point bulge in the fourth canto, the conquest also set a record for consecutive triumphs at nine. Sparkling defense was again evident as the Hilltoppers managed to garner a mere six points while offensively, six Centralites tallied T.D.'s. Central-St. Matthew Central inaugurated league warfare, crushing Saint Matts 32-6. Vanquishing the mirrors on their home grounds, M. Raszkie- wicz paved the way with twin TD's, while T. Glembocki, I. Purcell, and l. Duchynski crossed the final wide stripe to insure the Cardinals their tenth straight triumph, The Red Birds' defense proved solid as the op- position was again held to a lone six points. M. Central-Shenandoah Fired-up Hill Road gridders smashed a hapless Shenandoah group with a powerful ground attack in a 34-O rout, T. Glembocki and L. Fox each registered two TD's. D. Coach I. Schaaf briefs Card acc M. Schorn on a new play. With a majority of last year's dribblers returning, Cardinal mentor Ioey Schaaf had a solid foundation on which to build Central's Philadelphia Suburban Catholic League title hopes. The Hillroaders opened the season with a string of setbacks but the Bed Bird quintet lost no time regaining their poise. Al- though the team won its first two league contests, it was touch- and-go throughout the first half which the Cards ended with a respectable .SUO percentage. Coach Schaaf realized that the squad needed a revamping and made the necessary alterations. The result-the Cardinals caught fire. An effective l-3-1 defensive zone kept the opponents field goals to a minimum while a fast break blitzed the opposition and left them open-mouthed. The Schaafmen lost no time setting up an eight game winning skein and rival coaches rated the flaming Red Birds as the team to beat . However, a dishearten- ing pair of losses to Notre Dame and St, Matt's squashed all pennant hopes. But the Bed Birds still had no salt on their tails and they advanced into the PCIAA Class A playoffs. First opponent to bow under the bludgeonings of the Cardinal express was an old and powerful nemesis, Allentown Central Catholic. ln un- doubtably the most thrilling game in Hill Road annals, the Cards managed to nip the Vikings, 49-47. The winning effort was pri- marily creditable to Mike Schorn, whose layup just seconds after the start of the second fand sudden deathl overtime brought the house down, although the comeback staged by the Cardinals as a team was probably the biggest thing since Samson brought the roof down on the Philistines. Central, in its most balanced attack of the season, belted Marian Catholic in the second round of PCIAA play and team spirit soared to a record height. But in the semi-finals, the high flying Red Birds were brought down by the lances of the Golden Knights from Norristown who eked out a 51-50 victory bringing Central's climb up the PCIAA Class A playoff ladder to an abrupt halt, Height advantages and a deflected pass in the waning seconds led to a Cardinal downfall. 92 B. From eight to eight-thirty gaiety reigned su- preme as the lordly seniors ruled over the treshe men whose homerooms were located in the main building, At two o'clock the freshmen from the annex joined the freshmen from the main building, By this time the gym had been decorated with huge green and yellow bows and balloons. During the lirst part of the program various freshmen, all disf playing huge green ribbons, were called upon to perform according to the wishes of the mighty seniors. Bowing low the trosh recited the senior pledge, carried plush toys, raced around the gym in ct toy tire engine, and satisfied every whim ot the upperclassmen. But the freshmen discovered that even the seniors had hearts, and when they had proved themselves good sports, the freshmen were told to relax. Then the seniors presented various skits they had prepared. P.A.S. programs marked the celebration of Vocation Month, Pennsylvania Week, Catholic Press Month, and the Civil War centenary. Under the direction of Father Zolondek the mu- sic department presented the annual Christmas program. As Mr. Foreign Language stood trial at the Language Festival, Centralites enjoyed the visit of the representatives of the various languages taught here at school. With an eye on the future, Centralites participated in a career day assembly. Most of the guest speakers at this assembly were alumni of Central. Shortly before the Easter vaca- tion the glee club of Saint loseph's College, Phila- delphia paid its yearly visit to Central. Senior thespians donned religious garb to pre- sent the three act comedy, Brother Orchid. Little lohn Sarto a gangster returns from a ten year pri- son term to find that he is to be taken for a ride by his one time friends. He escapes and takes refuge in a community of monks, the Little Brothers of the Flowers. Through the kindness they show him, Lit- tle lohn is converted and becomes Brother Orchid. How Brother Orchid handles his old friends when they attempt to break into the Little Brothers' flower market forms the climax of the play. Under the di- rection of Father Bednarik the eleven man cast turned in an excellent performance. Thumbing through the library career kit, N.H.S. members, M. Deakyne and H.
