A limb for a limb Don't just stand there. Say something! In May, 1939, the residence of William H. Luden became Central Catholic High, chiefly through the efforts of Father William Hammeke, rector of St. Paul Parish. Recognizing the possibilities of the Bon Air estate as a school for all the Catholic students of Reading, he purchased the mansion in October, 1939. In the second year of the school's history, the size of the student body had more than tripled, soaring from seventy-five to two hundred forty-seven. Accordingly plans were formulated for an annex between the main building and the garage, which had been converted into a chemical and biological laboratory in 1940. The 1941 annex included a combination auditorium- gymnasium, locker rooms, showers, cafeteria, eight class- rooms, and library. A second section was added to con- nect the mansion with the new building in 1945. In 1954, three classrooms were erected at the east end of the school, connecting the laboratory with the rest of the school. At this printing, a new two-story faculty home, to cost approximately .15150,000, is being erected at Clymer Street and Eckert Avenue to house the Sisters of Chris- tian Charity. The convent will contain twenty-two private rooms for the Sisters. The building, ninety-five feet by thirty-two feet, will also have a chapel, community room, kitchen, dining room, service rooms, laundry, and bath- rooms. The date for completion is October 1 when the Sisters' rooms on the third floor of the high school will be converted into four classrooms to take care of additional enrollment. Takes all types . . .
