In May, 1939, the residence of William H. Luden became Central Catholic High, chiefly through the efforts of Father William Hammeke, rector of St. Paul Parish. Recognizing the possibilities of the Bon Air estate as a school for all the Catholic students of Reading, he purchased the mansion in October, 1939. In the second year of the school's history, the size of the student body had more than tripled, soaring from seventy-five to two hundred forty-seven. Accordingly plans were formulated for an annex between the main building and the garage, which had been converted into a chemical and biological laboratory in 1940. The 1941 annex included a combination auditorium- gymnasium, locker rooms, showers, cafeteria, eight class- rooms, and library. A second section was added to con- nect the mansion with the new building in 1945. In 1954, three classrooms were erected at the east end of the school, connecting the laboratory with the rest of the school. At this printing, a new two-story faculty home, to cost approximately .15150,000, is being erected at Clymer Street and Eckert Avenue to house the Sisters of Chris- tian Charity. The convent will contain twenty-two private rooms for the Sisters. The building, ninety-five feet by thirty-two feet, will also have a chapel, community room, kitchen, dining room, service rooms, laundry, and bath- rooms. The date for completion is October 1 when the Sisters' rooms on the third floor of the high school will be converted into four classrooms to take care of additional enrollment. CARROLL MCCORMICK, D.D., Ph.D. Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia Titular Bishop of Ruspae His Excellency The Most Reverend John F. O'Hara, C. S. C., D.D. Archbishop of Philadelphia Hundreds of thousands of Catholic High School graduates in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia gaze proudly upon the cultural surroundings in which they were educated. This system of schools, second to none, is the happy result of the interest and support of the Archbishops of Philadelphia. His Excellency, the Most Reverend john Francis O'Hara, C.S.C., D.D., present Archbishop, is personally responsible for the recent rapid expansion and development of elemen- tary and secondary education. His impressive building pro- gram is evidence of a remarkable confidence in God and 'a deep fatherly solicitude for his teen-age Hock. In this centenary year of Lourdes, we note that Our Blessed Lady is the Patron of the Archdiocese, and that, on May 23, 1952, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia was solemnly consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary at the shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, Portugal, Further-the Archbishop bears on his coat of arms a silver star set against a blue pennant. The silver star, Her symbol, blue, Her favorite color. 8 The Most Reverend JOSEPH MCSHEA, D.D., Ph.D. Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia Titular Bishop of Mina The Ri ght Reverend MONSIGN OR EDWARD M. REILLY, J.c.D., LL.D. The Right Reverend Monsignor Edward M. Reilly, a native of Pottsville, Pennsylvania, assumes the responsibility for the complete educational system of the archdiocese. i Following his ordination in 1936, he attended the Catholic Uni- versity of America in Washington, D.C., for graduate work. In 1945, Monsignor Reilly was confronted with the duties of the Diocesan Superintendent of schools. Since that time he has proved himself a worthy successor to a line of expert archdiocesan administrators whose broad vision and attention to detail have made the Philadelphia schools the best in the world. Monsignor's tremendous interest in Catholic education, together with his gracious personality, has won for him the respect and ad- miration of administrators and students alike. 9 The Reverend JOHN j. GRAHAM, D.D. Assistant Superintendent of Schools The Reverend FREDERICK STEVENSON Assistant Superintendent of Schools W 3 5 I me is l Reverend Henry Huesman It is fitting that we have memorial days for those who died to preserve freedom from the oppression of men. It is expedient that there be a memorial for the supreme sacrihce of Christ Who died to give us freedom from the tyranny of sin. This we have in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Twenty-live years ago Father Huesman, Pastor of St. Paul Parish and Director of Central Catholic High School, felt the firm anointing thumb that sealed his hands with the power to reenact the Drama of the Redemption. Hearty congratulations, happy Silver Jubiliarian! May your loving service rise like clouds of fragrant incense to delight the Heart of God. 10 Reverend Raymond J. Leichner The Lord made to him a covenant of peace that the dignity of priesthood should be to him forever. Our heartfelt congratulations to Father Leichner who is celebrating the lifteenth anni- versary of his ordination to the priesthood. This month of May brings happy memories of his con- secration by His Eminence Dennis Cardinal Dougherty in SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral, Philadelphia. During the past five years we have observed the dynamic energy our beloved principal exerts at his administrative duties and the deep interest he shows in the spiritual health of the students. This zealous bustling, we know, comes from an awareness of his God-given vocation and a realiza- tion that no time may 'be lost in bringing to Central Catholic the peace that results from a union of heaven and earth. 11 z , , x ,f r,f'Q.f,fg,f'L'f ,QL it N, ,fu Taking Fathers inventory are Cen- tra1's new gift shop salesmen Jerome and Andrew. Installation Day, October 10, opened the door for another year of planning and figuring. The student council, under the leadership of President Thomas Twardowski, took on the cus- tomary duties of directing corridor traffic and arranging skat- ing parties, doggie roasts, and dances. Sunday, November 24, was a red letter day for twenty-six members of Central's student association. The group repre- sented Central at a gathering of 16,000 youths who attended the Pontifical Mass, which marked the climax of the sixth National Conference of Catholic Youth Week. The celebra- tion took place in Convention Hall in Philadelphia, and all received Holy Communion. This year Central has been duly accredited with a certifi- cate of membership to the National Association of Student Councils of the National Association of Secondary-School Principals. The association will send the school a copy of the 1958 Student Council Yearbook, a copy of their newest publication N. A. S. C. On photography day, October 29, two photographers speeded the picture taking, and all Centralites were glad when they were dismissed an hour early. Our trip to Villanova on October 12 for the annual meet- ing 'of high school journalists held an extra attraction when we met Notre Dame's Fighting Irish squad outside the chapel. Also, Terry gave a talk on Time and Half Time. Our editor received an appointment to the chairmanship of the yearbook section of the Columbia Press Conference in Philadelphia on February 8, but we were snowed in, and couldn't travel. However, the advisers of the yearbook and newspaper traveled to New York for the National Press Conference held March 13, 14 and 15 at Columbia University. At a party on February 11, our stall entertained the staffs of Hillriele Echoer and Sharps and Flair, the stars of Annie Get Your Gunn, and also Central's Be-teenas. Centralma artist D. During the year, the paper received various awards: a first place award from the Pennsylvania School Press Association, two first class honor ratings from the National Scholastic Press Association, and an International first place award from Quill and Scroll. On October 12, the staff members attended a press con- ference at Villanova. Margaret Martin, co-editor of Hillrfde Efboer, spoke on the topic justified Pride. Dr. Regis L. Boyle, teacher of English and Journalism at Woodrow Wilson High School, Washington, D. C., and head ofthe journalism department at Catholic University, accepted an invitation to give an informative talk at our fifth annual Publications Conference on March 22. But a 21-inch snowfall barricaded the journalists and the affair, to the chagrin of all, was cancelled. The February literary edition this year honored Our Lady of Lourdes in picture and story. The stafi' awarded two pins, one to joan Zack for her poem Pedro , and another to K. Martin for Eye Witness , a prose selection. MARGARET MARTIN AND JOHN HARTGEN Co editorf Hillfide Echoes' artist M. The first league tournament at Atlantic City on November 8 and 9 marked Central's achievement of 28 A ratings out of a possible 30. Seniors john Christel, Tom Twardowski, Mar- garet Martin, and Maureen Finan participated. The Forensic Union acted as host for an Extemporaneous Contest on November 23. Under Father Schulte's tutoring, the Hill Road orators nabbed the highest rating of the 21 schools in competition. Peter Fox and Torn Twardowski placed first and second respectively in the annual Monsignor Wachter tournament on March 8. On March 30, orators from all over southeastern Pennsyl- vania vied with each other at the elimination contest which decided the speakers who would represent the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in the National Catholic Forensic League Finals held at Chicago, May 15 to 17. Begun by Father Zolon- dek, the paper has its own J-Room which accommodates five people and one cigar fGuess whoselj in reasonable comfort. To the staff, the hours spent in this room are golden hours of fun and laughter. Band members exit in snappy fashion. Adding merriment to every scholastic event, the school band provides talented Centralites with an excellent outlet for excess energy. These students have shown their musical versatility and group dependability at pep rallies, football games, and parades throughout the year. While the echoes of the football band were still pounding in the ears of the student body, Centralites saw the formation of the Solidaires. This new group added its sweet and slick tones to assemblies and brightened public affairs with its music. Not only are these musicians the heart and life of every pep rally and student gathering, but they have added their vim and verve to the annual Christmas and Holy Name parades as well. Special interest groups formed themselves into clubs which met for business after school each week. There were all types: religious, social, service, and literary. The Vocation Club, with an all-feminine log, was interested in sending religious reapers into a field that is ripe for harvesting. The members prayed for religious vocations, and corresponded with Noviti- ates of various Religious Orders. Collecting stamps and other religious articles for needy mission centers, especially for St. joseph Abbey, Spencer, Massachusetts, kept the Mission Club busy all year round. In order to secure membership in the National Projectionists Club of America the boys of the Pro- jection Club sent to Penn State, University Park, for a charter, underwent tests on machine operation, and secured merit cards for themselves. Campaigning for new members, the Red Cross Club put on a playlet at Wyornissing High School. They were engaged in helping the underprivileged and in similar charitable works. Red Cross members M. Yuschalk, T. Klimko, J. Aiello, and J. Meridionale create Christmas favors for children confined to local hospitals. In answer to pleas of the St. joseph Abbey, Spencer Massachusetts, W. The sacred moment comes when Father Jerome, as- sisted by T. Vallish, distributes Holy Communion to weekly recipients. Permeated with the Catholic philosophy of life, the edu- cational program afforded many spiritual experiences that polished our armor for battle against the materialistic forces that overrun our little world. Rugged pre-season drills in the dye works of the St. Lawrence tilt-yard molded the Cardinal ranks into a potential power. However, gloom prevailed as the light of victory shoneronly once more through the remaining season. The robbery of two Card aerials set up both of the Mirrors' scoring plays, while Ron Druzba remained the lone Cardinal to cross the final wide stripe. CENTRAL-YORK Central traveled to York to vie with the Fighting Irish in a traditional meeting, and were received graciously to the score of 26-13. The York Parochials compiled a 12-6 pad after two frames with the Cards, returning a 13-12 margin. The Irish, however, scored twice in the remaining quarters to clinch a victory. Late in the same period joe Miller moved the ball 35 yards to the Allentown three-yard line. Frank Carabello plunged over for the equal- izer, and Ron Stanislaw's placement kick sealed the victory. A spark of brilliance, however, was displayed in decisive victories over York Parochial, Lebanon Public, Pottstown Parochial, Conshohocken Parochial, and Lancaster Parochial foes. The Red Birds inaugurated the '57-,58 hoop campaign by drowning York Catholic, 54-45, on the Cardinal's hardwood. In out-battling the Yorkmen, three Cardinals registered in double figures. Their meeting with a stout Lebanon ,Public opponent pro- vided the Central crew with the second win in three engage- ments. Possession ball mastery accounted for the margin in this 45-42 contest. Ten games elapsed before the Cardinals again tasted victory against a comparatively feeble St. Pius X opposition. The victors tallied 64 markers in opposition to an insufficient 45 by the visitors. The Red Birds collected their fourth triumph when they encountered the Mirrors of Conshohocken. With the comple- tion of this wager, St. Matthew's awoke to Hnd themselves victims of a 62-35 romp. Yachnick lays up an easy two-pointer to reap the fruits of fast-break labor. a working combination. As the number of losses mounted, the Cards established an all-time nadir. For some, the mere hope of future success has revitalized a dying Cardinal spirit and has encouraged the efforts of the determined. The stealth of sophomore B. Adam's illusive fake paves way for tally during St. Pius action. In the midst of rugged competition, the baby Cards enjoyed a commendable 17-7 log. Coach Father Dickert was forced to use many combinations as several of his starters were shuttled to the Varsity in a vain attempt to bolster its attack. A fine crop of freshman saw three from its ranks on the starting five-Larry Thren, Vince Eckel, and Mark Stefany- shyn, who camped with the Varsity in the last half of the season. The scoring honors went to John Magee, with a total of 283 points for the season. The only team to down the cards twice were the Bishop Kenrick yearlings in two close, hard-fought contests. Much to the elation of all, the Cardinal Hedglings turned out a few surprising upsets. In the ninth contest of the season the Cards romped the powerful Bethlehem Iayvees. Two games later they eked out a one point victory over the previously undefeated Easton quintet. The baby Cards did more than win games in their own class, they pro- duced ball players, five in all, who played outstand- ing varsity ball in the midst of bitter defeat and humiliation. M f After the loss of three varsity players this season, Miss Virginia Illuzzi was faced with the tedious task of molding a winning combination. The fast break and defensive basket- ball, employed to their fullest advantage, proved to be the outstanding factors which spelled victory for the Court Queens. In the opener with Tamaqua the team emerged vic- torious and paved the way to their thirteenth winning season, defying the traditionally unlucky number. The sextet met Lebanon, their arch rivals, and squeezed through to a 48-47 victory. The basketeers continued their winning ways against Wilson, Pottstown, and Lancaster. In- cluded in this streak was a breathtaking tally o-f 44-43 in which the queens downed a formidable Brandywine Heights opponent. All good things must, however, come to an end, and their second encounter with Brandywine halted a seven game winning streak. The Cardettes sought to avenge the defeat and brushed aside their following two opponents, but fell victim to Bishop Kenrick, 24-29. The lassies reached their peak after defeating Lebanon, 31-30. But Dan is capable. Performing in public isn't something new to our 6' 1 champion. Historic Buffalo Bill lived again in his expert interpretation of the Wild West hero in the senior play. And Friday afternoons found him taping the school 'radio program for WRAW. Reading novels is Dan's favorite pastime, however. Beneath a myriad of sparkling snowflakes and multi-colored balloons a record-breaking 111 couples danced away the hours from 9 to 12 o'clock to the strains of Wally Spotts' Orchestra. Gold and white decorations completed this elegant scene. On the stroke of 10:30 P. Co-chairmen Joan Krupa and James Davidheiser headed the committee brigades and organized the annual episode at the Berkshire Hotel. In charge of decorations were Susan Vass and Barbara Smith, while Frank Ruch, Patricia Dengler, and William Shaner ably attended to refreshments. Handling publicity were William Garvie,' George Young, Marilyn Brown, and Joan Venzke. HENRI DANIEL-ROPS 114 From the Edito1f's Pen A last burst of staff effort sent all copy to Kuitztown today -all except this page. So if I can muster enough energy to give a synoptic view of our '58 Centmlmaz, I will do it. In some respects it's been a very short year. Time swept dizzily by as we rushed to meet one deadline after another. But it had its occasional headaches, too. Those captions and blocks of copy seemed to take forever until finally, everything fell into place. We had an exciting time publishing Centmlma and it is an, experience we will remember. To please Our Lady we used the Lourdes theme, and I know she helped. The book would not have materialized otherwise. The staff tried to make our new annual not only a history of the class of '58, but also a profile of Central Catholic and how it contributes to that freedom which is rooted in religion. J. Edgar I-Ioover, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in his Ideals for Americans deplores the tragedy of our generation which he said has resulted from our spiritual shortcomings, from the disastrous moral failures of our age. I wish to express my heartfelt thanks to- The SENIOR STAFF for their cooperative effort in making this book ,a good one. The SENIOR CLASS for their all-out campaign to obtain funds for the publishing. FATHER LEICHINIER for his interest, suggestions, and permis- sions.
