N ,- ' f ..: .... -,..'-: I 5 I designed with us in mind The transition from stately mansion to hall of learning was more than a case of three easy lessons. When the pastor of St. Paul Parish bought the Luden mansion in 1939, he took the tirst of many steps forward. Realizing the possibilities of the Bon Air estate not only for his own parish, but tor all the Catholic Goin' fishin We love thee, Alma Mater, youth ot Reading, he made the purchase and a new Catholic Alma Mater was on its way. The great rooms lent them- selves admirably to conversion, lending an old world charm to the practical up-to-date idea of modern education. Following the dictates of sup- ply and demand, the new insti- dear old Central High tution soon found itself in need of more space and equipment. Plans were formulated, and in both 1941 and 1945 new sec- tions were annexed. Central con- tinued to grow. Originally chris- tened the Monsignor Borne- mann Memorial, the school has become more popularly known as Central Catholic High. 732 tl. 553' 1' A little bit o' Central Reverend John .Wachter It Central has helped us to handle that explosive piece of dynamite called growing up, it it has changed our liabilities to golden assets, we are indebted to the Pastor of St. Paul Parish. The financial backing supplied by Father Wachter and his parishioners did somersaults to keep our Alma Mater in the running. Now that we are graduating-confident, mature, and embarked-may we express our gratitude for the secret cargo that made our trip through Cen- tral a successful one. He likes La Magnita cigars. He likes chicken, too-but not chicken a la king! Art and music figure in his cultural tastes. Now and then the co-founder and principal of Central Catholic High School takes a busman's holiday. Serving on examining committees, assisting at dedica- tions, broadcasting on the radio-all play a part on the extra-curricular agenda ot a very busy man, Reverend Charles Allwein. This year Father served as vice-chairman on the Committee of the Middle States Association evaluating Harrisburg Catholic High School. He later filled the post of chairman on a committee appraising the scholastic efforts ot Linden Hall, Lititz, Pennsylvania. Since its foundation twelve years ago, Central has grown considerably in size, enrollment, and prestige. To the man responsible for that expansion, we say: Sev- enteen salutes you, Father Allwein! From the very tirst class we caught the general idea that a knowledge of valences, vertebrae, and volts would mean more in the long run than kidding, 'kibitzing' and cutting up. Most of us realized that our tycooning days were just around the next corner. So with great intellectual gallops we covered the ground of an endless vocabulary and captured an elusive X Y Z. But here is the heart ofthe matter. It we are graduating- adult, arrived, and assured-it is because Our Lady helped us all the way. Without her Son's help, her own reassuring smile, and gentle prods ot an interested faculty, Seventeen never could have done it. Nw, , 'fm gt . X X, . X, X. Trees have trunks. Elephants have trunks. Therefore, elephants are trees. A false generalization-a correction-and our house of faith once more stood upon the rock. Studies in the life of Christ, Church history, the Divine and Ecclesiastical precepts, and apol- ogetics will go a long way to help us under- stand, defend, and propagate the Faith. Yes, it was the rainbow at our fingertips. As a preparation tor commercial art, we dwelt extensively on printing, poster design, fashion illustration, and color harmony. The general idea Actually, it's know how. Know how to draw a revolved section ot a crank? Know what a universal ioint is? Know where to use an os- cillator? Films, batteries, motors, drawing boards were the trusty tools that taught us the science ot iuice, the assembly ot a ieep, the construc- tion ot a blue print. R. Here are the dances, doggie roasts, games, publications, proms, and all the other jig-saw pieces that made up this many-sided picture of the Queen's Teens. We're sharing with you the frenzy before every deadline, the tension of every sports event, the excitement and nerves of every prom. And it's all focused on you. Remember? You watched a marching band step out in tricky routines, you exhausted your- self and partner in a Mexican Hat Dance, you munched those countless hot-dogs during that half-time lull, and you are the one who will never forget that certain Junior Prom. So here it is, all on the next few pages-the special phase of SEVENTEEN that was strictly for fun and for you! Il Power in ribbons Swinging into the gym to the beat ot the Honor Band March , T3 council members and 32 representatives assumed the duties of their respective offices. These elected students strive to create a closer cooperation among the stu- dents themselves, and between the faculty and students. President R. Regular Monday council meetings were sparked by lively discussions ot pet peeves and possible proiects proposed through the student suggestion box. During a lull in their duties as corridor cops, the members ot the House exercised their veto power on a council-proposed student court. We yelled, clapped, shrieked, whistled, and urged our teams to give it the old college try. Munching hot dogs, we begged a mud-spattered eleven for iust one more touchdown. Prayers and promises stormed heaven during the tense hush of a free throw that could win or lose a crucial game. All else was forgotten when panting half-milers struggled those last few feet to the tape and first place. And following the great American tradition, we raised the cry of Throw the bum out! in a diamond dual. This was the part of us that was sportsmanship. With a last quarter spurt Central forged ahead and emerged victorious, 61-55. Central Catholic 49 Stevens Trade 58 A hard fought battle resulted when the Red Men of Central ran smack into a rampaging, revenge seeking Stevens Trade array. Taking a lead early in the game the Lancaster County boys were never seriously threatened. Central Catholic 43 Allentown 77 LeRoy Katz, a candidate for all-state honors, poured 21 points through the hoop to lead the Allentown High Canaries to a lop-sided 77-43 victory over Central. The East Penn Leaguers used a full court press to perfection and forced the Cards to shoot from the outside during most of the encounter. Central Catholic 51 Lebanon Catholic 57 Despite Bob Falin's 14 point effort, the Cards lost out to a hard pushing Lebanon Catholic High team, 57-51. lt was Lebanon's third win in eight starts against the Cards as athletic rela- tions were resumed after a one-year lapse. 100 J 4. This year some forty odd candidates turned up at Coach McLaughlin's first call for spring prac- tice. From this horde of hopefuls, 18 tossers made the grade and received their uniforms. Many old-timers , including DePaul, Seaman, l Diamond dusters and Janiszewski, were missing, but the vacan- cies were filled without too much difficulty. Fatally iniured in a head-on automobile colli- sion in the vicinity of his native Pottstown, Donald Tobin, Junior 4, was snatched from the midst of his classmates but not from their memories or love. His pleasant manner and efficiency as Council Member and student will long be remembered by all with whom he worked and played. His was a great lesson, not book learned : the Love ot Our Lord and ot Our Blessed Mother and the perfection of their Way. 108 Special Benefactors Reverend John N. Wachter Reverend Charles L.
