Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1951 volume:

TEK There was green upon the hills. And the elusive tra- grance of the verdure drew us on to where the emerald virtues of youth layqembedded in its roots. Faith, hope, life, courage, inspiration were the treasures buried there. The prize we deemed worthy of the struggle. So we stumbled on over the challenging mounds of Central's proving ground to gather the precious experience that would make us men and women-gracious. dependable, enthusiastic, cooperative, virile, Christlike. lt is because we want to share with you the mem- ories of our four green years at Central that we jetted down the up hills and down dales' that brought us tb graduation day. Installation Day . . . . Central came into being as a result of the foresight, good judgment, and loving kindness of our superiors whose one ob- jective is our scholastic and moral development. Our future hap- piness is their goal. . . . . Let us repay their interest by developing sturdy charac- ters that will not betray our ideals in later life. By continued good will,'let us try to make their duties less arduous. Let us do our part to assist them in attaining their objec- tives, your happiness and mine. . . . . Our welcome as useful, proficient, and valuable citizens of Reading will de- pend upon the use we make of our school days. People will judge us by our speech and actions. Let us conduct ourselves every- where and always as should students of one of the finest Catholic schools in the coun- try. Above all, let us remember we are Catholic ladies and gentlemen. . . . . Courteous cooperation, kindly help- ful consideration for each other in our daily contacts, will bring blessing to our school. Ever mindful of the bounty of Almighty Cod and Blessed Mother, let us frequently commend to Heaven our desires for suc- cess. Education at Central meant more than life in a mansion, more than wearing the velvet glove. It implied chasing the boogie-boo of mental darkness by the light of the student lamp, and pursuing the goblin of spiritual torpor by the light of grace. The hourly dedication to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost brought us closer to the meaning of our search for knowledge. Though we were caught in Pythagorean theorems, Shakespeare's sound and furyf, and Chopinis interludes, we held fast to the golden rope that was fixed in the hand of the Great Teacher. Here at Central hopes were born, ideals encouraged, characters molded to insure security-physically, intel- lectually, artistically, morally. All this we shall remem- ber though we be far from our hallowed halls of ivyf, i.-ada m' X T' 2 :'. . ' J ... In the uplucking of the sprigs we found a new life. The student council discovered it in the zealous perform- ance of their official duties, the Centralma staff, in don- ning their journalistic thinking caps to produce a dif- ferent yearbook, our ever-present news hawks, in mak- ing each issue of Hillside Echoes a stellar flight into the land of journalese. So, too, with all the other activities. It was while on the hunt that the Class of ,52 sponsored a prom that brings back memories of the rustle of taffeta, swish of nylon net, strains of Whitey Meisky, a glistening gym floor, and the flash .of an occasional set of iridescent socks and tie. As spears of mint cast into a bowl of swirling punch, our personalities, we hope, enriched by the Christian so- o QQ cial virtues of Central, will have their effect on the world XS, about us. mu f ,z Q A t, - ' 1: 1 'la 'Q A 6 -'fri-'all' 1 X Z A y f ', ,A l . And in these virtues of the field lies the sense of teamwork and fair play that brought victory home to Central. On the gridiron or on the court, rounding the bases or churning the cinder track, a greater knowledge of these intangibles flowed into the heart of each young athlete. The P.C.I.A.A. duel proved to the quick the lessons learned all along the way. Thrills born of previous vic- tories and pangs resultant upon former defeats returned to spark our team to co-championship and to instill into our cheering section a new sense of values. Each sport played, every contest followed, contrib- uted another blossom to the crown of laurels that Cen- tralites will bear with pride through the bitter and sweet of after-years.
