fa the future Included in the annex built in 1941 are a spacious combination auditorium-gymnasium, locker rooms, showers, cafeteria, eight classrooms, and library. A second section was added to connect the mansion with the new building in 1945. The Central of the future! This architect's plan fits our dream to a T. Though the annex built in 1945 to accommodate over 600 students furnished additional classrooms and offices, arts and crafts departments, sports equipment and journalism rooms, hopes for our Alma Mater include a bigger, better Central for the years to come.

Progress build From mansion to hall of learning. Little did the archi- F T tect who designed the stately residence of William H. Luden, candy manufacturer, realize that he was plan ning the answer to a city's prayer. Father William Ham meke, pastor of St. Paul Parish, was laboring with in- adequate educational facilities for his youthful flock. Recognizing the possibilities in the Bon Air estate not only for his own parish but also for the many Catholic students of Reading attending public schools, he nego- tiated for the purchase of the Luden home in October, 1939. The mansion lent itself admirably to conversion. With- out changing the architectural lines of the original build- ing, the zealous administrators provided administration offices, a faculty library, music room, office practice rooms, home economics department, physics laboratory, five classrooms and cloakrooms. Frescoed ceilings, marble foyer, ornate fireplaces yawning windows, myriad tokens of gracious living give an atmosphere of old-world charm to the other- wise practical business of modern education. I I Already in 1941 expansion laid its course on the Central scene. The student body had increased from 75 to 247 even in the second year of the school's history. The new institu- tion would satisfy the requirements of supply and demand. Accordingly plans were formulated for an annex between the main building and the garage, which had been con- verted into a chemical and biological laboratory in 1940. Ground breaking for the new section took place on Janu- ary 21, 1941p cornerstone laying, on May 16, 1941. Six
