Little did the archi- F T tect who designed the stately residence of William H. Luden, candy manufacturer, realize that he was plan ning the answer to a city's prayer. Father William Ham meke, pastor of St. Paul Parish, was laboring with in- adequate educational facilities for his youthful flock. Recognizing the possibilities in the Bon Air estate not only for his own parish but also for the many Catholic students of Reading attending public schools, he nego- tiated for the purchase of the Luden home in October, 1939. The mansion lent itself admirably to conversion. With- out changing the architectural lines of the original build- ing, the zealous administrators provided administration offices, a faculty library, music room, office practice rooms, home economics department, physics laboratory, five classrooms and cloakrooms. Frescoed ceilings, marble foyer, ornate fireplaces yawning windows, myriad tokens of gracious living give an atmosphere of old-world charm to the other- wise practical business of modern education. I I Already in 1941 expansion laid its course on the Central scene. The student body had increased from 75 to 247 even in the second year of the school's history. The new institu- tion would satisfy the requirements of supply and demand. Accordingly plans were formulated for an annex between the main building and the garage, which had been con- verted into a chemical and biological laboratory in 1940. Ground breaking for the new section took place on Janu- ary 21, 1941p cornerstone laying, on May 16, 1941. Six fa the future Included in the annex built in 1941 are a spacious combination auditorium-gymnasium, locker rooms, showers, cafeteria, eight classrooms, and library. A second section was added to connect the mansion with the new building in 1945. The Central of the future! This architect's plan fits our dream to a T. Though the annex built in 1945 to accommodate over 600 students furnished additional classrooms and offices, arts and crafts departments, sports equipment and journalism rooms, hopes for our Alma Mater include a bigger, better Central for the years to come. Hammeke, May 20, 1949, there ended the first short chapter in the history of Central Catholic. The great white mansion stands as a tribute to its beloved founder. When Central Catholic seemed largely to consist in trying to beat spades into spears and squares into circles, Father Hammeke was at the forge lending his intellectual strength and flaming spirit to the task of molding a worthy instrument for the hand of the Great Artisan. God has used Father Hammeke's gift of Central Catholic, his legacy to society, to fashion in the souls of hundreds of its students a higher moral- ity, a finer and more sensitive conscience, so that they, too, might use their hearts and brains and hands in the service of their Creator. Father Hammeke breaks ground for the new annex, January 21, 1941. REVEREND JOHN N. WACHTER Pastor cwrend in lfl N. Wachter Our precious dreams would have dwindled to pretty pictures in the fire, our sincerest hopes to merely Spanish castles in the air, had we not found another rare and prodigal friend in Father Wachter. Having suc- ceeded Father Hammeke as pastor of St. Paul Parish, June 1949, he became actively interested in helping us advance confidently in the direction of our youthful ambitions. Not only did our new pastor bid us go win our spurs, but he also rallied his beloved parishioners to dip into their bags of gold that our Catholic education might become a reality. They call their benevolence the path of duty , we call it the spirit of Christ. We have no words to thank Father Wachter and his flock. We offer them our love and gratitude. These gems have life in them, their colors speak. Twelve REVEREND CHARLES L. ALLWEIN Principal C1939- l l I l T Father Allwein directs the student l body over the public address sys- T tem. game Kevcreud Kluzrlzs AT. ,flllwviu The heart of progress throbbed within the walls of Central Catholic and Father Allwein kept a steady hand upon its pulse. Weaknesses he combated with keen insight, sound iudgment, and timely advice. Wild beatings of faddish innovation were treated with conservatism. Our enterprising administrator succeeded in so controlling the flow of progress that without yielding anything of principle, he adopted what was necessary in new ideas and brought Central to an acknowledged supremacy in its own line, so much so that already in November, 1946, the Middle States Accrediting Association could proclaim the institution superior and very su- perior after its thorough examination of the educational pro- gram, stafii, plant, and administration. Father AlIwein's philosophy is not to turn the students out small and finished but seriously begun on a wide basis with self- knowledge, energy and purpose. Through change to God. MOUNT CARMEL-20 CENTRAL-O Mount Carmel Catholic's Rams overpowered the Cards 20 to O in their fifth meeting of the gridiron warfare. The Red Birds spirited drive came in the third quarter but failed when the Schaaf men drove to the four-yard line where they lost the ball on downs. ST. FRANCIS-l 8 CENTRAL-O The Hilltoppers of Spring Grove proved to be a formidable foe by topping the Schaaf men in their gridiron tussle T8 to O. The victory en- abled St. Matthew's gridders to square their series with Central. The Cards won the only other game played between the schools, 7-0, in 1944. HARRISBURG-26 CENTRAL-O The Harrisburg eleven walloped the Red Birds 26-O. Central made its best showing in the second period by marching to the host's 26 only to lose the ball on downs. Central chalked up 5 first downs and com- pleted 2 in T3 aerial attempts. CAMDEN-5'I CENTRAL--O The powerful Jersey Irish proved to be more 'ihan a match for the Schaaf men by handing them their seventh consecutive setback of the gridiron campaign 51-O. Central picked up numerous first downs via the air lanes, but was unsuccessful in penetrating the Camdenites' stone wall. Running through a few light plays, Central's starting lineup gets ready for its first home showing. First Row: J. Schiavo, J. Goss, T. Curtin, J. Kase, E. Frankowiak, J. Morris, and G. Faller. SALESIANUM-39 CENTRAL-0 Mixing a killing ground attack with an aerial bar- rage that seldom missed connections, the Sallies scored in every period to erase the memory of last year's 25-8 rout, to swamp the Cards 39-0. DELONE CATHOLIC-38 CENTRAL-7 Delone Catholic's streamlined Squires ended Cen- tral's football season on a sad note trouncing the Hill Road boys 38-7. Zlndcr I 5 heaps Ringing down the curtain of their '49-'50 basketball sea- son Miss V. llluzzi's Cardinalettes registered 'I3 wins and 10 losses. These capable lassies came forward to capture third place in the City League. The league was composed of both A and B teams of last year making this conquest a greater victory for our girls. ln this, the fourth year of competition, the Central sextet proved their mettle by winning 5 of the 8 games played. Miss llluzzi inaugurated the new rule, the continuous dribble, from which the girls acquired more speed than had been shown by any previous Central team. The game with Reading Catholic High represented the Cardinal maidens' most impressive of the season. They thrashed the enemy to the tune of 86-ll. Most thrilling was the tilt with Robesonia, a heartbreak- ing three-point loss, which edged out Central, 29-26. The impressive score of 39-'ll over the Alumnae demon- strated the Cardinalettes steady advancement in teamwork and marksmanship. Playing in forward position this year were D. Blatt, the sharp-eyed top scorer with 374 precious counters, and M. Ganter and C. Klosowski following with 295 and T49 points respectively. Distributing 49 markers among them were the up-and-coming forwards M. Prentice, J. Nelson, and D. Quimby. Small but determined M. Gantert tries desperately in the game with Lebanon Catholic to tap the ball to one of her teammates, D. Blatt or C. Klosowski. Ninety-four Also on hand throughout the season were guards A. Walton, R. Giamotti, M. Gantert, L. Schnable, R. Adams, M. Mulligan, and K. Greytok, who stunned the opponents with their unique hardwood style. The JayVees copped one of three games by defeating the Hamburg JayVees on the home floor. All credit for their successful basketball season, the team declares, goes to Miss V. llluzzi, their capable and spirited coach. Cardinals-60 St. Matthew-44 Central strode into the basketball picture this sea- son by humbling St. Matthew of Conshohocken. The Redbirds' superior marksmanship could not be de- nied throughout the game. Cardinals-60 Southeast Catholic-35 This game provided the home fans with their first glimpse of Central's court combine. The Cards skill- fully wrecked a highly lauded Southeast Catholic five. Cardinals-62 Lancaster-41 Lancaster Catholic's Crusaders made an impressive start by taking the lead 8-0 in the opening minutes of the game. But the Cards' experience and height proved too much for the thwarted Lanacster quintet. Cardinals-60 Bristol Public-41 Central opened basketball relations with Bristol Public High and were victorious in this first encounter by a comfortable margin of 19 points. Bristol, a power- house in their own right, lacked the spark which gave Central their fourth consecutive victory. Cardinals-43 Northeast Catholic-46 A taller Northeast Club came from behind in the waning minutes of the last quarter to score a hair- line upset over the Cards. Northeast's timely uprising tipped Central for its first hoop reverse of the season. pionship trophy from Brother Paul, mod erator of the ex-champ Vikings of Pitts burgh Central Catholic High School. Cardinals-42 Reading Catholic-27 Although held down during the first half of the game, the Birds rebounded to defeat their tradi- tional rivals. Once the Central Juggernaut started clicking, the feathered flock of Reading Catholic was swamped. Cardinals-54 Lebanon Public-37 The flashy Schaafmen rocketed to a 17-point lead over the Cedars of Lebanon. They produced a power- packed offensive that could not be denied. Cardinals-59 York Catholic-37 The power of Central's machine was evident in its decision over a tough York Catholic team. The Car- dinals were on the long end of the score throughout the game. Cardinals-53 Ridley Township-41 Encountering one of the most potent foes of the season, the Cards emerged triumphant after a close score in the third quarter when the Green Raiders came within one point of tying the count. However, a wider margin was gradually restored and the Cen- tral fans breathed easier. Cardinals-46 Hazleton Public-65 The Redbirds sustained their second loss of the sea- son at the hands of the well-coached, smooth-working Hazleton Mountaineers. The Mounts' unerring marks- manship held the Cards in check throughout the game. Cardinals-46 Lafayette Freshmen-36 In chalking up their tenth triumph of the season by reversing a mighty and previously undefeated Lafay- ette College Freshmen team, the Cardinals displayed the stuff which was to make them PCIAA champions. Cardinals-46 Salesianum-31 The game with Salesianum High was highlighted by 12 consecutive tallies registered by the victors in the third period. Cardinals-70 Lebanon Catholic-39 Zooming to the lead from the opening gun, Central soundly thrashed Lebanon Catholic. The reserve sharp- shooters, given a chance to show their wares, proved promising. Cardinals-53 Brown Prep-4'l The Schaafmen, exploding for 22 points in the third quarter, handed Brown Prep a decisive defeat. The Bruins held the lead throughout the earlier part of the game before the boys hit their stride and staged a blistering second half. Cardinals-65 St. Patrick's-35 The Hill Roaders completely engulfed the Patsies of Norristown. Breezing through the Irish defense they whipped up a comfortable 30-point edge. Cardinals-85 Perkiomen Prep-67 The Cards smashed a high-flying Pennsburg team for their fifteenth triumph. It turned out to be a record- breaking success for the victorious Red and White. Cardinals-76 St. Francis Prep-40 Coach Schaaf used his entire squad of 12 men in romping over the hapless Prepsters whose efforts were in vain. The 36 point difference represented the larg- est total of its kind to date. Cardinals-37 Hazleton Public-44 The Mountaineers short, snappy passing and dazz- ling technique befuddled the Cardinals, however, Cen- tral's unerring marksmanship from the black line kept them within hailing distance of the Seranymen. The Reading hoopsters doubled the score against the New Jerseyites. Cardinals-77 Lancaster-42 Lancaster Catholic, leaders in the Central Pennsyl- vania Catholic League, proved to be no match for the Central powerhouse as the Cards duplicated their previous victory in a more decisive manner. Cardinals-44 York Catholic-39 The Red Birds found the going tough when they traveled to York. The opponents' deft shooting from outside kept them in the game all night. A final spurt in the last minutes iced the verdict for the Cards. Cardinals-83 Reading Catholic-51 The rampaging Central hoopsters rolled up their 20th verdict of the season and set two series records, raising the series total to 14-6 in their favor. Cardinals-62 St. Francis Prep-43 Traveling to Spring Grove, the Red and White re- turned with their twenty-first victory of the season. H. Aschenbrenner, R. Falin, W Coachj, T. Reedy, and J. Gallagher Second row-Mgr. G. Prender gast, J. Walter, D. Ertz, J. Schiavo J. Connolly, J. Schmidt, and G Kane. I This game was a reflection of the one staged at Cen- tral a month ago. Cardinals-89 St. Patrick-3'l Central Catholic's marksmen burnt up the court to pulverize the Norristown Patsies by almost tripling them. Coach Schaaf used the second stringers a great part of the game, and the team came out on top. Cardinals-61 Lebanon Catholic-35 Repeating an early season victory over the Leba- non parochials, this time on the opponent's home court, the Central dribblers were never headed as they breezed through by a decisive margin of 26 points. Cardinals-52 Perkiomen Prep-55 A surprised Central team walked off the floor after losing to Perkiomen Prep, a team they had previously upset. With the addition of a tall center named Quinn, the Prepsters were greatly improved and topped the Cards by 3 points. Cardinals-86 St. Matthew-62 Coach Joey Schaaf's passers virtually outclassed the highly polished Mirrors. They were only 3 points shy of their previous 89 point record. Central's sensa- tional victory narrowed the PCIAA playoff to only three games. One Hundred Two Junior Varsity Team: First row- Orth, Father Dombay UayVee One Hundred Th ree Cardinals-67 Allentown-47 After falling to the Vikings for five consecutive years, the victory hungry Red Birds completely be- fuddled the opposition. The classy Cards leapt to a wide margin in the opening minutes and held staunch- ly throughout the game. Cardinals-60 St. Michael-45 After a stunning first half in which the Luzerne County champs held a five point lead, the star-studded Red Birds shot their way to a sparkling triumph. Pitts- burgh alone remained. Cardinals-58 Pittsburgh-4'l Central Catholic Cardinals repelled the mighty ex- champs and seized the long coveted PCIAA class A crown. The Red and White king pins turned towards a new horizon: Glen Falls. GLEN FALLS TOU RNAMENT Central emerged from its first Glen Falls bout barely subdued by an impressive Southeast Catholic array, 48-50. The Cards then rebounded with a 77-73 score to overthrow a fighting DuBois quintet. The Keystone champs continued on their rally to humble the ex- alted Suffield brood, 77-71. SPECIAL HONORS M.
