Now and then a person comes along who spends a lifetime helping other people. Such a person was Stacy Budd. He always placed the welfare of other people above his own welfare. Mr. Budd was born to serve others. He enjoyed doing that and found that he could best serve his fellowman through education. He served on the Lee County Board of Education for many years and as chairman of the Board of Trustees of CCTC for 18 years. His belief that people could find a better way of life through education and his willingness to devote the time and energy necessary to see that ALL people had that opportunity set him apart. The Open Door philosophy of the Community College System was his own philosophy of life, for Mr. Budd's personal and professional life was an open door to anyone who needed a friend. His wish for CCTC was that it be a comprehensive education institution that would serve all educational needs for the adults of this area. He was called into statewide service and became Vice-chairman of the State Board of Community Colleges, working hard in the halls of the legislative building for benefits for employees and students of the system. He felt especially close to students, seeking their counsel as he made decisions for the future of the system. He liked to be near them and always attended the Student Government Association's state conferences. Mr. Budd leaves a legacy that will be a difficult to sustain. We must strive with diligence to maintain what he began. The challenge for us is great. Oh, would that we had him with us today . . . We shall miss our cham- pion, our leader, our friend. IN MEMORY UF MR. STACY BUDD
