4 + ,...J V I 4 i '1 I - I 5 1 CENTRAL CARCLINA TECHNICAL 1961 1980 COLLFICFI WE'VE COME A LONG WAY, BABY! ln the summer of 1961, using the old county school bus garage as temporary classrooms, 50 students started class to become electrical linesmen at the Lee County Industrial Education Center. This was the first class held on campus, the only other courses were extension courses. September, 1962, the IEC opened its doors of the new campus with 59 students, 6 instructors, and 2 administrators. It now had the facilities, equipment, and supplies for these curriculums: Automotive Mechanics, Electronics, Drafting, Agricultural Business, Machine Shop, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, and Sheet Metal Work. April, 1964, our school was chosen as one of the thirteen original schools to establish a Learning Lab. With the expected expansion of adult education, the IEC was provided with the facilities of the county home on Nash Street. This building was renamed the Adult Education Center. September, 1965, brought a big change: the IEC became Central Carolina Technical Institute. With this change, CCTI was endowed with the power to award an Associate of Applied Science Degree for its two year technical programs. This new status required the need for a change from eight trustees to a total of twelve. September, 1966, saw the birth of our annual, the Cencaro. Our first volume had 57 pages of student activities and 11 pages of ads. Volume 14 for the year 1980 will have 116 pages of students and their activities. August, 1969, Dr. J.F. Hockaday became the new president of CCTI. He was chosen by the Board of Trustees to replace William A. Martin, who resigned to enter Graduate School at Duke University. Fall, 1970, the student body was asked to make nominations for a school mascot. After all nominations were in, a vote was held. From this process we became known as the CCTI Centaurs. Fall, 1972, two steps forged us ahead. First, we started the night program for the curriculum courses. Second, we received full accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This was reaffirmed in 1976. September, 1974, saw the start of the visiting artists in residence program. Through this program we have had a classical guitarist, a folk singer, a potter, a classical pianist, and the current artist, a classical guitarist. We also entered the Piedmont Athletic Confrence, which sponsors events in tennis, golf, bowling, volleyball, softball, and basketball. September, 1977, the North Carolina General Assembly declared the Student Govern ment Association President to be a nonvoting member of the Board of Trustees. The school year is 1979-1980 and we have made another big jump. In July, 1979, we became Central Carolina Technical College. From one main building, which has been expanded, the campus has grown to include a Science Building, Mechanical Building, Learning Resource Center, Bell Building, Veterinary Medical Laboratory, Telephony Building, Cosmetology Building, Administration Building, Student Center, and the Adult Education Building. This year has also seen construction started for an addition on the LRC and a new Continuing Education Building. CCTC has grown to include 1,962 students, 69 full time and 76 part time curriculum instructors, 181 part time continuing education instructors, 17 administrators, and 12 voting and 1 nonvoting trustees lFall, 79-80l. Instruction has expanded to include four areas: continuing education, General Education in co-operation with Campbell University, vocational which includes Automotive Mechanics, Industrial Maintenance Mechanics, Motorcycle Mechanics, Nurse Assistant, Practical Nurse Education, Radio 81 TV Broadcasting, Cosmetology, Telephony, General Office, and Tool 8l Die, technical which includes Accounting, Agriculture Science and Mechanization, Banking and Finance, Business Administration, Corrections, Drafting and Design, Electronics Engineering, Industrial Management, Instrumentation, Paralegal, Secretarial Science, Telephone Technician, Law Enforcement, Real Estate, Recreation, Teacher Associate!Reading Option, and Veterinary Medical. 2 yesterday Z ,-fa-.U - '-W'-, ---.-4- L A 1-13- + 4 T A ..today.. . growing Qi R llxi I -A -ui .f. ...-. f R I G '- Judy Douglas first came to CCTC as a student. From a Paul Harvey broadcast A policeman is a composite of what all men are, a mingling of saint and sinner, dust and diety. Culled statistics wave the fan over the stinkers, underscore instances of dishonesty and brutality because they are exceptional, unusual, not commonplace. Buried underthefroth is the fact. Less than one-half of one-percent of policemen misfit that uniform. That's a better average than you'd find among clergymen. What is a policeman made of? He, of all men, is at once the most needed and the most unwanted. He's a strangely nameless creature who is Sir to his face and fuzz behind his back. He must be such a diplomat that he can settle differences between individuals so that each will think he won. But . . . lf the policeman is neat, he's conceitedg if he's careless, he's a bum. lf he's pleasant, he's a flirt, if he's not, he's a grouch. He must make, in an instant, decisions which would require months for a lawyer. But . . . If he hurries, he's careless, if he's deliberate, he's lazy. He must be first to an accident and infallible with a diagnosis. He must be able to start breathing, stop bleeding, tie splints and, above all, be sure the victim goes home without a limp. Or expect to be sued. The police officer must know every gun, draw on the run and hit where it doesn't hurt. He must be able to whip two men twice his size and half his age without damaging his uniform and without being brutal. If you hit him, he's a coward, if he hits you, he's a bully. A policeman must know everything - and not tell. He must know where all the sin is - and not partake. The policeman must, from a single human hair, be able to describe the crime, the weapon and the criminal- and tell you where the criminal is hiding. But . . . If he catches the criminal, he's lucky, if he doesn't, he's a dunce. If he gets promoted, he has political pull. If he doesn't, he's a dullard. The policeman must chase bum leads to a dead end, stakeout ten nights to tag one witness who saw it happen - but refuses to remember. He runs files and writes reports until his eyes ache to build a case against some felon who'll get dealed-out by a shameless shamus or an honorable who isn't. The policeman must be a minister, a social worker, a diplomat, a tough guy and a gentleman. And, ofcourse, he'lI have to be a genius. . . For he'll have to feed a family on a policeman's salary. Paul Harvey says, Don't credit me with this mongrel prose, it has many parents, at least 420 thousand of them, all POLICEMEN. tCourtesy of the Police Science and Criminology Department, Central Piedmont Community College, Charlotte, North Carolinal IV' fb' X Dwight Moody Cole Jr. A friend, fellow student, and a fine person in the community.
