SENIURS DOYLESTOWN :: PENNSYLVANIA ' ',,....w .f' -'a , I ,M V A Foreword When the doors ot' the new Central Bucks High School were opened to us for the first time in September, little did we realize how many doors of opportunity were beyond them. Besides many new and cheerful classrooms, there were spacious gymnasiums, a huge auditorium and cafeteria and well-equipped laboratories. ln addition to the physical facilities, we were presented with a revised and enlarged curriculum including increased vocational ollerings and club activities in which we could develop our avocations or supplement training for our life's work. Therefore, we, the Antler Staff of the Class of 1955, feel that the theme Doors of Opportunity is most appropriate for our yearbook and have at- tempted to show both pictorially and in writing the opportunities that have been given to us this year. They open, they close, they swing in, they swing out. The essence of lite is choosing the doors ot opportunity which you will keep open. To choose wisely is to succeed and to live a full, useful, and wholesome lite. Manv doors heckon at the time of fraduation . -. , . 5 . lrom high scnool. rlo enter some doors is to close others-H sometimes forever. Iust as kevs open physical doors, so certain keys open doors of opportunity. A cheerful smile, a kindly word, and a helping hand open the door to many life long friendships. ln- dustrv, initiative, and common sense open the doors to economic security. Compassion for ones fcllowmen and faith in God open the way to fullness of life. All are doors which one must open for himself. To keep right doors of opportunity open one must always keep closing doors of selfishness, greed, intolerance, prejudice, and hate. God speed to each of you as you go forth to serve. I. ZAHNISER MR. GENDALL Miss BERGER Miss MANTZ MR. MICHAELS As the first senior class to attend the new Central Bucks High School, the class of '55 under- took many interesting and varied projects. The class was given the opportunity to sponsor activities which were previously the duties of other organizations. Among the social activities at the beginning of the school year was the Halloween party, solely a senior affair for the purpose of getting acquainted. One of the most successful dances ot' the year was the Christmas Dance attended by many alumni. After Christmas vacation the seniors were busy preparing for their Sock Dance and running noon dances in the Community Room. In March Return Engagement , the first senior play to be held in the new auditorium was presented at two evening performances. Homeroom activities centered about discussions on colleges and vocations, Student Council atfairs, the Kuder Preference test, the U. S. Employment Service battery of tests, self-analysis charts and preparations for the Washington trip. With only a memory of the trip remaining, the class began looking forward to the senior banquet and their ultimate goal-Commencement on lune 9. SENIOR EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE-S!andz'ng, lefl lo nlqhl: R. Several events were sponsored in order that sufficient funds for a successful Prom would be available. ln November, Clara Farber reigned over the Harvest Hop, a dance restricted to the eleventh grade and their guests. The atmosphere ofa carnival provided the background ofthe novelty dance, Coney Island, presented in February. A cake-walk, side-shows and other festive amusements delighted those who attended. The juniors took charge of serving at the State Knee-Hi Basketball Tournament held at Central Bucks on March 15 and 14. This task involved operating the Snack Bar as well as other smaller duties. The climax of social life at Central Bucks occurred on the night of Iune 12 as all the splendor of previous years surrounded the gala junior Prom. An outstanding feature of the year was the large number of students who participated in the planning and organization of all class social activities. ADVISORS-S.'andfng.' Mu. Sowmzs, Mu. GERHART. TH E CONNECTING LINK Une ol' the largest organizations at Central Bucks is the Student Council. This group serves as the coordinating agent between the administration and student body concerning school activities. Because of the large enrollment, there was an exceptionally large council which made it possible to form small committees where problems could be dealt with more etllectively. These committees were: Constitution, Election, Lunch Room Program, Snack Bar, Lost and Found and Tratiic. The first project sponsored by the council was the magazine drive which netted the council 3500. The council activity which benefited everyone in the school was the Snack Bar. Many classes were able to augment their funds by taking charge of the Snack Bar for several weeks. Une of the outstanding events of the year took place in April when the council played host to the Tri-County Convention. Discussion periods were followed by dancing and refreshments. The council has tried to establish a working system for future councils and to pave the way tor a better understanding between the administration and stu- dent body. THE PLAYS THE THING The senior high dramatic organization this year produced a wide variety ol programs, including exchange performances with neighboring schools, as well as assembly programs at Central Bucks. In fall they sponsored a production of Iulius Caesar, presented by members of the Hedgerow Theatre, lVIoylaII, Pa. Under the direction of faculty sponsor Robert Gendall, their annual play, a three- act comedy-mystery, HciI'ZiIHCl'Cy Ghost, was given in February. ol NGSES FOR NEWS Chatter Bux keeps its members busy trying to put out a paper worthy oi the many awards it has received in former years. Under the sponsorship of Miss Kohler, every member is encouraged to de- delop a 'tnosezfor news, which they proved by finding enough material for two extra issues. This year members-of the class entered the Temple Press Tournament. Sandra Wcmodard, Chatter Buxn business manager, attended the P. S. P. A. This staff has gained valuable information on the work involved in putting a yearbook to- gether, and it is hoped that this additional experience will lead to the production of bigger and better Central Bucks annuals. Accompanied by Miss Mantz, Antler advisor, a group of four students attended the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Conference in New York, March 15 and 14. While the stamp enthusiasts were doing historical research on coin- memorative stamps of famous men and states, the builders were busy with model airplanes, ships, automobiles, and boats. One of the most active clubs at Central Bucks, the Radio Club, presented two radio plays on Station WBUX. During the Christmas and Easter seasons, the members led the morning devotions over the public address system. Mrs. Brunner's Banking Club offers the opportunity to the senior high school students of saving money regularly in the same fashion as the federal deposit system. The members discuss new ways to encourage students to bank more regularly, and posters and slogans are displayed toward this goal. 64 OUTDUORS-TYPING-ATHLETICS The Field and Stream Club has been fortunate to have as one ot' its Co- sponsors Deputy Game Wai'clen William Rouse, who with the faculty advisor, Mr. Elfman, led the club in numerous activities. Besides movies, speakers, and student reports, field trips were a highlight ot' the group's program. The girls in the Commercial Club learn, under the instruction ot' Aliss Clill- ton, the proper operation of office machines and the work involved in secretarial positions. In this way, the members are better fitting themselves lor their chosen vocation. YVestbrook and Miss Kelley, the girls in the Leaders Club learned the correct procedure in the handling ol' the apparatus. Like the boys, they are of invaluable assistance in physical education classes, in the exercises performed on the horse, rings, ropes, parallel bars, spring board, buck, and horizontal bar. This organization has been established under the supervision ol, Director of Athletics William WVolfe in order that the members might become familiar with the proper use of the gymnasium's new apparatus. These boys can then assist in physical education classes when the apparatus is used. The members also become better acquainted with the rules of the major sports which are played during gym periods. This group is in charge of ordering, scheduling and mailing films, slides, strip films, and showing them in classrooms and in the auditorium. The squad also issues recorders for classroom use. Members of this group give their services not only for school groups but also for civic organizations. 71 M MIXED CHORUS The Senior High School Choruses have made remarkable progress during the first year at Central Bucks. Under the leadership of Mrs. Buckman, the choruses grew within a few weeks from an original membership of twenty-seven girls and forty-seven boys. Each student is also a member of either the Boys' or Girls, Glee Club. The Mixed Chorus made its debut at the Dedication Program in October. All three choruses combined efforts in the Christmas Carol Service and the Spring Musicale, the two annual choral presentations. In addition to the Easter Service in school and on the radio, the choruses also contributed to programs given by other departments in the school, including programs for Lincoln's Birth- day, Brotherhood Week, and the Tri-County Conference of Student Councils. In March the music department was host to three hundred sixty students and music educa- tors of Bucks County who presented the third annual Music Festival in Doylestown. A play-off' match resulted in CB's winning the second-half championship. Upper Moreland, the first-half victors, provided the next opponent as the Finnmen journeyed to Abington for the crucial championship contest. The Willow Grovers proved the stronger squad as they came from behind in the final period to defeat Central Bucks, 55-52. The team then represented the Bux-Mont Conference in state Class A competition in the P.1.A.A. District 1 play-offs. The Buckaneers were disqualified at the end of the first round as Ridley Township from the Suburban League conquered the local quintet, 62-55. From time to time the boys also enjoyed movies, demonstrations, tours of the Agricultural Department, discussions about their projects, and talks. The Model Club, under the supervision of MI'. Detwiler, isicomposed of thirteen junior high boys. Throughout the year they have been actlvely engaged in building airplanes, boats, cars, and trains. The Nlasqueraders begain their program by learning to play charades to develop ease and poise, and primarily to get accustomed to using exaggerated motions in order to put across their idea to an audience. They went to the library where they scanned play books and finally selected George Vtfvashington Slept Heref' VVhile the cast was rehearsing, those not in the cast collected proper- tics, furniture, and costumes and learned how to apply make-up. The play was presented to a unior lligli School assembly in April. M. RLHXIEII, D. SCIIWALAI, B. Athletic, Girls Leaders, and Sporting Club The purpose ofthe Athletic Club is to provide instruction in the rules and techniques of the various sports that are popular at Central Bucks. Because many boys are unable to remain after school and because there are only a limited number of boys able to engage in varsity sports, the athletic club was made avail- able to these Students during their regular school day. The girls' Leaders Club has had a very successtyl year. They have par- ticipated in various activities such as volleyball, basketball, rings, mats, the horse and the parallel bars. Members of the Sports Club have been playing the various sports in their respective seasons. Basketball and volley ball gave way to the spring sport, base- ball, early in April.
