And for the students — the outstanding campus leaders of the year — national recognition by the Who ' s Who program marks a pinnacle of scholastic achievement. Selections are made by campus nominating committees and based on decidedly above average academic standing, community service, leadership ability and future potential. 88 Larry Burgbacher Wayne Vinson Wanda Hagler Mike Jaffe Jim Ates Rush Horton Joseph Webb 89 School For The Deaf Seniors Joy Patterson Rueter, Missouri Linda Joy Parker Riverside, California Leslie L. Lawer Oregon H. William Gipple Downey, California Recognizing the need for a program to meet more specifically the special need of the deaf student. Central Bible College established its School for the Deaf in the fall of 1962. Special classrooms, teachers and curriculum were provided for the purpose of providing systematic Biblical training. In order to serve the individual needs of the deaf students, instructors teach these classes by the use of total communicatio n, utilizing speech, speech reading, the manual alphabet, and the language of signs. Students respond in similar manner. They are encouraged to use hearing aids when recommended. The program provides a course of study designed to prepare the deaf for Christian service among the deaf. anice Gravatt Orange, California Cindy Hunsucker Norwood, Missouri Ralph Visscher Marietta, Georgia ■ ' The Living Signs Choir  1 J 1 SPORTS DIVISION have received from God? Therefore honor I Corinthians 6:19-20 Cheryl Cochran, captain Pam Crow, co-captain Providing inspiration is a difficult task. The cheerleaders of CBC endeavor to keep the spirits of fans and players at their highest by displaying a contagious enthusiasm that is seen in every cheer or yell. Because of the excitement they generate, the players are always loudly assured that Spartan fans are behind them 110%. Becky Cripe Becky Ross Vicki Redden Helen Malinovsky Varsity Basketball In 1959 a new and exciting addition was made to the CBC athletic program — varsity, basketball! Formed from the intramural all-stars, the varsity team was coached by Forest Arnold. A slight hinderance to the team was the regulation requiring long pants as part of the uniform. However, with a push from Coach Ar- nold, this regulation was eventually dropped. Since those days of playing in long pants, the Spar- tans have developed into an excellent ball team. Al- though not aided by a scholarship program, the bas- ketball program has produced many outstanding ball players. Constantly improving under the direction of Coach Denny Mcllroy, the team has proven itself wor- thy to compete in the National Christian Colleges Association of America with many other fine quality teams. Foremost within the minds of those involved in the basketball program is the opportunity provided to share, on and off the court, the beauty of a Christian Life. Because of the fine Christ-like attitude displayed by the team, many opponents, fans and referees have seen true Christian love in action. Intramural programs in soft- ball, basketball, and volleyball serve as an outlet for the competitive spirit of many CBC students, whether participating as a fan or a player. Intra- murals also provide an opportunity for display- ing the important Christian principles of disci- pline, teamwork, self-control, and sportsman- ship in a very practical way. 1 JJiR i . lv . ' . President Crouch has totally dedicated himself to making Central Bible College an institution that effectively fulfills this responsibility. Our President ' s earnest desire for God ' s perfect will in each life and his sensitivity to God ' s voice serve as an example and an inspiration to each member of the student body. Dean Kirsch Supplying counsel, supervising student affairs, superintending the teaching staff, overseeing the total educational program — these are but a few of the responsibilities required of our dean. Genuine concern and a sincere desire to solve each individual ' s problem that arises are a few of the characteristics that Dean Kirsch has come to be highly respected for. David Drake With a wealth of experience to draw from, David Drake efficiently runs registration, carefully transfers credits, and wisely directs many internal affairs of the college. His general guidance and oversight are invaluable assets in keeping the college functioning in a smooth, efficient manner. Busy — best describes the life of Stephen Walegir. As business manager, continued improvements of CBC ' s facilities and financial stability are his goals. Achieving these goals requires many busy hours meeting with adminis- trators and students, observing campus projects and encouraging the upkeep of the buildings and grounds. Phillips works for the constant improvement of public relations between the campus, its students and the world surrounding them. Wisely advising and governing the activities of Central Bible College is the Board of Directors. These men of varied occupations and backgrounds combine their skills and experiences to produce action that is beneficial to the school and its students. Board Of Directors Thomas F. Zimmerman, Chairman oard of Administration Controlling the continual operation of Central Bible College is the Board of Administration. These men, as a unified body, guide the school in its academic, social and spiritual advancements. 140 It was Christ who gave some to be ... teachers, to prepare God ' s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining the full measure of perfection found in Christ. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. Whether a student is obtaining a mastery of factual content in Synoptic Gospels, gaining new insight in New Testament Greek, or learning to practically convey the Gospel in Homiletics, the total authority of God ' s Word is stressed, along with the ability of the Spirit to make it a living reality. Yet the deaf must also hear of God ' s love. Many of the deaf do hear the Gos- pel through the efforts of the School for the Deaf. Training deaf students to effectively communicate the Good News to other deaf people is the school ' s goal. In order to serve the individual needs of the deaf students, instructors teach their classes by the use of total communication, utilizing speech, speech reading, the manual alphabet and the language of signs. Special classrooms, teachers and curriculum are provided for the purpose of pro- viding systematic Biblical training. As part of Christian Service, students fill out service records. Jesus said, If you love me keep my com- mandments . And this is his command: to love one another ... Dear Children, let us not love with words or tongue, but with action and in truth. Christian Service records keep secretary hard at work. 174 You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you shall be my witnesses ... Students being • n witnesses, meeting needs — that is Christian Service. 175 Using a slide presentation, Jeff Swaim and Kathy Crow present the story of Christ. Child Ministries Although not caught in the whirlwind of an adult life, children too have needs. A need for a listening ear and a sincere heart. A need to love and be loved. A need for a friend who gives the gentle love of Christ. Child Ministries is that friend, sharing love in story hours, pediatric visitation, orphanage visitation, Royal Rangers and the Boy ' s Ranch. Orphanage visitation team Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 176 177 An effective and powerful ministry is not easily obtained. Church Ministries affords students the opportunity to experientially develop their God-given abilities toward this end. Through outstations or local assemblies, the student pastor is not only confronted with church problems and solutions, but also ministers and is ministered unto. As the student gives of himself, he receives invaluable pastoral knowledge, wisdom, fellowship and spiritual blessings. Titus Day, an avenue of Church Ministries, provides preaching opportunities for interested students. On this day, student ministers become pulpit guests of the Southern Missouri District pastors. Besides the experience received from their ministry, the students receive pastoral instruction and advice. 178 Contributing to the growth and edification of the local outstations are student volunteers. 179 Communicating the story of Christ is imperative, but what of those who cannot hear or read about Him? Special Ministries communicate the Gospel to these special people — the deaf, blind and handicapped. Through travel teams, interpreters, deaf church services, Living Signs Choir, visitation teams, story hours and Drama Club, a new life with Christ is offered. Visitation Ministries reaches out to those who cannot attend public church services. Visiting prisons, hospitals, sani- tariums, nursing homes and shut-ins, this organization shares the solution to life ' s perplexing problems and needs — Jesus Christ. We of the CUP staff have experienced many long, tedious hours creating the book you are now reading. For many of us it seemed as though we lived in a room of negatives, glue, glos- sies, cameras, pens, pencils, papers and deadlines. Our goal has been to give you, the CBC family, a pictoral history of the past year that will, in the future, bring you many fond memories. We have been praying that our theme, THE SPIRIT, will minister to and edify all who read the CUP. Our prayer is that your life will also become as a Cup — full of rich and abiding communion with Christ and entire yieldedness to His blessed Holy Spirit.
