She has specialized in private voice and piano instruction. This has prevented her from becoming acquainted with many stu- dents. However, directing the Oratorio Choir's special performances has brought another phase of her ministry into focus. The choir's classical and comtemporary sacred arrangements are solemn and rever- ent, deeply moving and inspiring -- so expressive of her own spiritual life. We dedicate this edition of the 1967-1968 CUP to you, Mrs. Mabel Thompson. A life of dedication to CBC . . and husband Carl and family President Crouch Challenging Central Bible College students to lives of total dedication and commitment has been a primary objective of President Philip A. Crouch. Dedication to the better- ment of mankind is achieved through involve- mentg commitment to God, through leader- ship. The Rev. Crouch has served as chief administrator of CBC since. July 1963. During the 1967 fall semester, he was reelected to the Assemblies of God Board of Education for a three-year term. He came to the campusin 1957 as a member ofthe faculty teaching in the Missions and Theology departments. 1 i He was formerly the associate director of the world-famous Lillian Trasher Orphanage in Assiout, Egypt, holding this position from 1948 to 1955. 1 After serving as a missionary in Egypt for 20 years, Rev. Crouch's missionary ministry was ended due to political strife. President Crouch is qualified to challenge students to a deeper life in Christ because he himself is a dedicated leader of men and a committed servant of God. 1S Hom11et1cs Dean Johns Remember that Warning notice to please remove your car from its illegal position, then the parking ticket for failure to heed a friendly warning? That's just a minor point on an almost inexhaustive list of duties which are under the direction of the very capable and scholarly Dr. Donald Johns. His duties as Central Bible College's academic dean encompass student counseling, faculty guidance, faculty procurement, Deaf School, and even the administration of CBC-Detroit Campus. Dean Johns Whose main responsibility is the management of faculty and curriculum also holds the position of instructor in the Religious Education and the Bible departments His keen sense of humor and depth of understanding has made his classes popular on the CBC campus He conside s this direct contact with students one of the most vital and integrating th ngs I do Education in depth education of the Whole man in Christ is the Vision of Donald Johns wh ---....,wMM X N Registrar When the inspiration to attend Central Bible College is conceived in the mind of aprospec- tive student, his first contact with the school is with Mr. David Drake, the registrar. The decision to accept or reject a candidate for the school rests upon him, and requirements for graduation are also decided in his office. Some of the other functions ofhis office include the planning of academic schedules, room assignments, veteran's advising, and exam schedules. Registrar Drake is an active participant in other campus functions. He's an instructor in English and American literature. During the school year, he led song services and was a guest speaker in chapel. The spiritual as well as scholastic guidance which David Drake affords the student body has been very beneficial to all those who have taken advantage of the opportunity to consult him. it Business Manager Help, -l'm broke! is an oft-repeated phrase to CBC Business Manager Stephen Walegir. His standard policy is to never disapprove a student's plea for financial assistance. He seeks to assist through long or short term loans, grants, or scholarships. The burden of planning the school budget, the employment of all service personnel, and the direction of the maintenance department are also part of his responsibilities. Plans to meet the demands for new complexes, such as the married student's dormitory, are originated in his office and then discussed with -the development committee. Mr. Walegir's past experience, sharp wit, and easy going humor brighten up an otherwise dull Job and make him a delightful person and a diligent worker. The trend of parents today, the abolition of the switch, has brought an increasing demand for dedicated, educated people. Workers are needed who are capable of capturing attention through mere gesture, inflection of the voice, and the use of audio visual material. The Religious Education Department, headed by Dr. Donald Johns, has endeavoredto help meet this demand by instructing education majors in the principles of ministry to children, youth, and other church-school related programs. However, since knowledge without the ability to apply and relate it is worthless to a prospective educator, a student teaching program has been established. Constructive critical advice is given to the student teacher after being observed in an actual class- room situation. Persons majoring in education have unlimit- ed opportunites to spread the gospel. CBC's Music Department is integrated with almost every phase of campus life: chapel, CMF, hall prayers, the classroom--everywhere. A real determination to succeed is an absolute must for this field of study. Many mu s i c majors were s oloists or featured in- strumentalists in their home churches. Often they faded into obs cure positions as members of the choir or band when they first came to CBC. But strenuous hours of practice revealed vocal and instrumental talent, when junior and senior music majors gave monthly recitals Recitals are required for music majors Applied music, such as Oratotio C hoir,' King's Choraliers, band or string ensemble, as well as music theory and literature, are requirements of those majoring in this field. Among the deaf, there are those who seek to learn, to understand, and to have the light of the gospel. This need was first dealt with by CBC in 1948 when deaf students were accepted into the regular program of the school. However, as more specialized training became essential, the Deaf School was incorporated as a depart- ment in 1962. Special classrooms, teachers, and curriculiun have-provided systematic training. Biblical, general, and applied education sub- jects are offered in order to provide a course of study designed to prepare the deaf for Christian service among the deaf. 1 ' x ,, I V Florence Way, Secretary to the Business Manager, and Virginia Hogan, Secretary to the President. The members of this group, elected by the students, are the official voice of the student body. The new student reception held on the lawn in front of Welch during Orientation Week was one of the many functions on the busy Student Government calendar. Library The library is a place for ardent study or quiet contemplation--your favorite girl or guy sometimes sitting across the table. The Pearlman Memorial Library, under the capable management of Head Librarian Eleanor Parry, is 'located on the third floor of Evans Hall. The center of scholastic activities at CBC, the library affords a wealth of material and information on religion and related topics. The specialized nature of the college necessarily limits the types of books and periodicals which can be made available. When the deadline for term papers draws near, the library becomes a beehive of activity, with many of its 22,000 books and 200 pe- riodicals in use. Additional services made available to the faculty and student body include the song and visual aid files. Competing for a period of just over two months, CBC lost to five college opponents by very slim margins. However, two late-season tournaments proved successful for CBC as they won first place trophies in church tourna- ments held at Belleville, Illinois, and Memphis, Tennessee. Campus Missions Fellowship is the mis- sionary-interest group at Central Bible College. Each Friday evening both home and foreign missionary speakers inspire students to be spiritually open to the Lord. Often a student will receive a call or a burden for missionary service in this weekly meeting. President Philip Crouch, himself a former missionary to Egypt, has served as sponsor of CMF for several years. The organization isdirected by elected student leaders who plan the year 's activities and contact speakers. - A highlight of Campus Missions Fellowship and the entire school is the annual missions convention held each fall. The convention consists of three days of special services and workshops, usually with two or three seasoned missionaries. A vital part of the convention is the continental prayer group booths, featured on pages 164 and 165. lS IS P ed Heaston, Jerg, secre- rerg and Don The prayer backbone of Campus Missions Fellowship is the continental prayer groups which meet each Friday at 6:30, justbefore the main CMF service. Through these, - students interested in a particular area of the world as a mission field have oppor- tunity to pray for that area. Special speakers directly related to each field often are available to present the needs first-hand. Areas represented include: Africa, Alaska and Indian, Far East, Home Missions, Deaf, Eur-Asia, Latin America, and Col- leges and Universities. Continental Prayer Groups Each prayer group is responsible to erect a booth for the annual missions convention. First and second place prizes are awarded. The money is used to help meet a need in the area the booth represents. Winners were Far East and Latin America. 7,4 4, 4 1, Last year's leaders were, Front Row: Alice Murray, Lois Nissley, Connie Hopkins, and Brenda Shanleyg Back Row: Dennis Disselkoen, Bill Smith, and Earl Stubbs. . Assistance is given by the Assemblies of God home and foreign missions departments and by the travel bureau of the Evangelical Foreign Missions Association. Student interns are expected, to give a complete report of their summer activities in the Friday evening CMF services during the next school year. Looking back we see that God has been with us at Central Bible College. Certainly this has been a year of events and activities which made us better able to nOccupy Until He Comes,H ' H' We grieve for two of our number who went Home to be with the Lord--Barbara Qualls and Phil Davis. lt's often hard to understand why He would take such young lives. We may ques- tion Him, but He says to commit our ways unto Him and do not rely upon our own understandingg us. We must rejoice in this. He knows what is best for But God has not taken all of us. You and l remain to do His will and work on earth until He does come. He has a plan and purpose for each of us. May we trust Him and allow Him to guide us a day at a time. We rejoice in this too. We, the staff of the l968 CUP, hope you enjoy this edition-- the 30th CUP to be produced at Central Bible College. We have enjoyed preparing it for you. Please pardon the delay in publication. We hope the fond memories it brings back to you will make the wait worthwhile. May God's blessing be upon each of you now. Let His love be ever present in your lives and may you walk worthy in Him. Sincerely in Christ for the l968 CUP staff, j,ffwQ ff' Thom,. A. Gilman . Edit r ' X , 'X I g' TZ 213 -?,,...............-i4 I r x 0 0 0 WALSWORTH Marceline, Mo., U.S.A v Q 4 1 i.
