There is no glory on the earth That anyone deserves Except as now his fellowman He really loves and serves. He has to be sincere in all He ever strives to do And not just try to benefit The wealthy and the few. lf we could live from day to day As Jesus would have us to live It would not seem so harsh for us Our enemies to forgive. So let's remember the other fellow Let's abide by the golden rule For only then can we be sure Our act is sincere and true. Barrey Smith '57 74a 'kaelno It is my opinion that the American people are somehow being misled about our teachers. The parents' distorted view of them is quite appalling. Maybe you are one of those who have the mistaken idea that teaching school is an undemanding position, filled by sitting behind a desk and giving assignments. The real teachers, however, are busy getting to know their pupils better, outlining a year's pro- gram that will be both beneficial and interesting, and composing tests to determine if they have been teaching in a manner their students are comprehending. Their job is a difficult one, requiring diligent handling. Are you one of the parents who sends his children to school expecting the teacher to straighten them out, without personally supporting the teacher's program? Some mothers belong to nearly every club in town and the fathers to all the lodges, but how many are interested enough in their children to spend two hours once a month making an effort to find out why Johnny can't read? A very, very few, but the attendance invariably increases when there is a covered-dish supper! Yes, the teachers can instruct guide, and direct but they need to have the parents fulfilling their duty AFTER school hours. Last spring, we were host to the district F.F.A. and held the annual North- ern District F.F.A. Contest here. The poultry judging was done in the base- ment of the gym. Rope and rafters were done in the old gym and potato dis- eases, tool identification contests etc. , were held in the classrooms. The cattle judging was done at Ralph l-lotham's farm. We were the champions and were awarded a plaque. The boys that took part in the contest were: Robert Blanchard, Ion Clayton, Tommy Tilley, Adrian Smith, and Dana Mullen. Just before school closed, the Future Farmers, Floyd McPherson, Cecil Caldwell, and Barney Curtis went deep sea fishing. This year we went to East- port. We arrived there about 5 o'clock in the morning, after making the trip in the F.F.A. bus. The boys had breakfast at a restaurant, then went put fishing. The fishing was very good, but the weather was really too cold to enjoy it for long. We arrived home about 4 P. M. We had a grand time and hope to go again next year. This year we had nearly three acres of Certified Russet Burbank Potatoes. We raised them on Harden Shaw's Farm. They were very good and we still have them in storage. We raised 515 barrels. We wish to thank those that helped us with our fertilizer and spray materials. We are making plans for our next year potato project now. This year we have done some logging. We bought a new chain saw. Tru- man Tapley found a good place for us to cut on the Great Northern. We have about two thousand feet cut now and plan on cutting more in the spring. We will probably work some Saturday's as we want to have lumber enough to en- large our shop, make a garage for our bus, and have some lumber to use in the shop. We used our tractor to pull the logs out of the woods. The entire chapter and the members of the Band who were to play in the State Band made a trip together in the F.F.A. bus. The Band members went to Bangor to take part in the State Band. The boys made good reports of the meetings they attended and we had to give them in class. We learned a lot and hope to stay down for two days this year. We arrived home about 2 A. M. a bunch of ver tired bo s. Y , Y H ' - Seated: B. Gilman, Treasurer, A. Shaw, Reporter, T. This was, we admit, definitely not an impressive season. It was necessarily a building year with only one starter, Lane McGaughy, and one substitute, Lowell Weeks, return- ing from last year's outstanding team. We can certainly look forward to a better than average season next year with only three seniors leaving: Lowell Weeks, Fred Ryder, and John Kilcollins. Midway in the season our team was honored by a delicious steak dinner at the Mars Hill Restaurant. The cheerleaders served the boys and they in turn served the cheerleaders. We thank Winnie for her fine school spirit and a wonderful dinner. A. C. l. was represented at the Aroostook County Foul Shooting Contest by Lowell Weeks who netted 38 for 50 tries. Our first M play-off game was against Ricker which we won by a margin of 13 points. Lowell Weeks led the scorers with 23 points and 23 rebounds followed by L. McGaughy and B. Thomas. Our second game against Ashland seemed a lost cause until the last quarter. It was then that A.C.I. displayed exceptional shooting ability. Led by Lane McGaughy with a game total of 26 points, we scored 34 points in the last quarter while missing only one shot! Larry Weeks, a freshman, turned in a fine performance doing a good job rebounding. Lawrence Beals, and Edwin Yotmg also played a fine game. Ashland proved too strong, however, and we went down in de- feat, losing by 9 points. Lane McGaughy was picked as a member of the ABS-- M All-County Team, and Billy Thomas received the A.C. I. --ABS Foul Shooting trophy for the highest percentage of foul shots made in regular contests.
