Speech is also a part of the English field Seniors may take this subjectg one year of English credit is given for the Speech course, ENGLISH DERIVED FROM LATIN Latin is the foreign language available at our high school. Students taking the academic course are required to take this subject for two years. Latin is especially valuable because 601 of the English words are derived from it. Also this subject helps to give us an understanding of the great Roman civilization. TWO NEW SOCIAL SCIENCE SUBJECTS ARE ADDED At least two years of social studies are required at every high school in Indiana. In- cluded in the social science field are two new subjects--psychology and sociology. One semes- ter of each was given this year. General business and commercial law are given to anyone interested in learning how to conduct everyday business. Miss Freeman, typing and shorthand teacher, stresses the fact that gra mar is an important part of typing and shorthand. One cannot separ- ate one subject from anotherg actually they are all interrelated. VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE COURSE IS VITAL Four years of agriculture are offered at CHS for those desiring a major in the subject. Upon graduation the agriculture major is prepar- ed either to begin farming or to go on to col- lege and further his study in this field. This course is important to our nation, for what can be more vital to us than our food supply? . .m,Igg MR. A knowledge of science is necessary for a limited under- standing of the discoveries that are being made in the world today. Our school requires every student to take one year of science. HOM -MAKING CONSISTS OF MANY FIEIDS It used to be that home economics, now called home-making, was just sewing and cooking, but now there are seven different fields covered in this course. These fields are: social devel- opment and fa ily relations, child care and training, the house: its furnishings and care, foods and nutrition, clothing and textiles, fan- ily health and home care of the sick, home nan- agement and cons mer buying. Miss Glunt is interested in making some of these fields available to the boys. She believes that the field of social development would be especially interesting to the boys. STUDENTS LEARN GOOD HEALTH HABITS One semester of girls' and one semester of boys' health is given each year. This course is required of every frea man. In this course the different parts of the body and their functions are taught. Also the students learn good health habits in this course. BAND RECEIVES TWELFTH CONSECUTIVE FIRST The Centerville High School Band has again nad a very successful year. It played at the aome basketball games and presented winter and spring band concerts. This year Centerville was sost to a four-band festival which will probably me an annual affair. It also marched in several parades. For the twelfth consecutive year the band brought back a first division rating from the contest held at Knightstown. Mr. Miller has done an excellent job during his first year at Centerville. We are proud of him. MIXED CHOIR IS STARTED AT CHS For the first time in many years we have a mixed choir. It has performed at various meet- ings, school functions, and programs. The choir made a splendid showing in the contest at Knightstown in which it got a rating of excel- lent. New robes were purchased near the end of the year, this will help make our choir one of which to be proud. This year we also have a jr. girls choir. 18 5 5 FIRST ROW: Carole Kinder, Maurine Good, Virgin- ia Parshall, Sherrie Faucett, David Smith, Brad- ley Botsford, Paul Robbins, Karen Boomershine, Betty Watson, Susie McDaniel. Many of the team's games were close and provided plenty of excitement. Also the team, coached by Max Showalter, provided plenty of action. Although 4 out of the first 5--Fred Harvey, Clyde Pennington, Harold Routson, and Hike Schlotterbeck--will graduate this year, the pic- ture for the future is not altogether dark. One of the bright spots of the season was Daryl Renschler, a sophomore, who scored 23 points in one game, 22 in another, and in double figures several more times. He hit for a percentage of .439 from the floor. Also a freshman by the name of Tom Kinder played both B-Team and A-Team ball and looked good on both teams. CHS will see Tom play a lot of basketball in the next 3 years. Centerville lost their first game in the sectional tourney to Cambridge City, one of the powers in the County, by s score of 64-Sh. Cam- bridge led all the way, but Centerville was never out of the ballgame. Mike Schlotterbeck led the Centerville scoring for the game with 19 points. Earlier in the season Cambridge defeated Centerville in a thriller by a score of 69-66. Mike Schlotterbeck, besides getting honors able mention for the All-Sectional Team, ranked high in field goals, free throws, rebounds, and assists for the season. CROSS COUNTRY BOYS WORK HARD Cross country is a sport that demands a lot of hard work but offers little glory. Very few people watch the boys run the 3 miles during a meet or realize the training and conditioning involved in such a sport. Buddy Phillips was chosen captain of the tea at the end of the season. Buddy has been one of the top cross country men at Centerville for the past 3 years. BASEBALL TEAM WINS 6 OF 8 The Centerville baseball team won 6 of their 8 ga es this season. The 2 losses were to Milton and Whitewater. After defeating Greens Turk l2-ll, Boston 16-5, and Economy 10-65 the Centerville 9 suffered its first defeat at the hands of Milton. Milton scored 1 run in the 4th, 5 runs in the Sth, and 2 runs in the 7th to defeat Centerville 8-6. Whitewater, County Champions, then handed Centerville their second defeat of the season. Fred Harvey held Whitewater scoreless during the first 5 innings of play while Centerville scored in the lst and 5th to go out in front 2-0. Whitewater then scored 10 runs in the 6th and defeated the Bulldogs 10-7. Mike Schlotterbeck was chosen captain of the team by the boys at the close of the season. versatile Schlotterbeck played outfield, short- atop, and pitcher.
