His position gives him the responsibility of the governing or the schools. Hr. Harris hires all the teachers, Janitorsand school bus drivers. These duties are additional to those involving such as property assessment, figuring of budgets, etc. Mr..Harr1s is a graduate of Centerville High gchcol, graduating in 1920. He has a son, Ronnie, who is a freshman in C. . S. Mr. Arthur H. Hines has been Wa ne County Superintendent of Schools since first taking that post in l92Z. Mr. Hines is a graduate of Indiana State Teachers College at Terre Haute, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree. He later received his Master of Arts degree from the Unl- verslty of Cincinnati. As county superintendent, Mr. Hines has as one of his duties, the general supervision of the educational program throughout each of the county schools. He also must approve all teachers that are hired and, with the help of the county board,determ1ne the policies for all county schools. Mr. R Mrs. Hines make their home in Centerville and have a son, Wayne, teaching in C. H. S. Mr. E. L. Outland became principal of the Centerville Schools in 1927. He has spent the past 22 years guiding the wavering footsteps of many a high school student back into the path, to see him advance to graduation. 'Lee' has joked at some time or other with every pupil ln C. H. S., he has had to become stern and many students have waited shakingly to hear his footsteps coming into the office to disposeof their particular mlsbehavlor. His has been the difficult task of seeing that students learned, that tea- chers taught, and that C. H. 3. graduated only students worthy of the name, a High School Graduate. Mr. Outland graduated from Earlham College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1919, and later received his Master of Arts from Chicago University. Mrs. Rose Hamilton earned both her Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees at Indiana University. Mrs. Hamilton is Mr. Outland's Assistant Principal. It is to her that the students have to go each morning to account for being late or for missing school the day before. Her friendly, sweet smile and her quiet helpful disposition will be remembered by every C. H. S. graduate since her arrival here as a teacher in 1922. Mrs. Hamilton also takes care of all the schcol's bookkeeping, keeping an accurate account of every or- ganizations financial status and of every student's pink slip deductions. ,awe Edward S. H. 8. With twelve years of happiness, joy and work fresh in our mind, As Seniors we're nearing the end of the line. Our memories take ue back through the grades, Joyous because of the friendships we've made. We were happy in victory and sad in defeat, As carefree and eager as any you meet. We have lived together to study and play, But our group must be broken, as each goes his way. So with a smile of reluctance, yet a happy sigh, We make our departure from Centerville High. byCHERYL mu X950 Billy Boian, General Eetill H. S., Ky., 1, 2 U-H, 1 Band, 1, 2, 3, M F. F. Naturally, everyone was so happy that today was the day for enrollment, especially the Freshmen, as it was on this day that they entered high school. To most of them it was an old routine, because they had been in the building since their seventh year, but to the Abington stu- dents, it was new and exciting to have school. Among these school chums were Earl Baker Fred Dickerson Glen Girdler ' Earl Candle Phyllis DuBois Dorothy Greene Donald Allen Juanita Davis Rcanna Geeting Jim Howell Herb Johnston Letha Kellams Jim King Olive Ann King John Lakamp Norma Mccrew Donnie Miller Marilyn Moyer Cheryl Rau Billy Joe Rice Dick Rosser Duane Smith Frances Smith Janice Spotts Katherine Stinson Dick Study Eileen Toschlog Keith Whalen Don White Marge Whirley A week hadn't passed, and we were electing officers. the privilege of going to this different Nancy Chowning Neil Fulton Jackie Hatfield Paul Kempton Charles Martin Lorene Raby Duane Shank Barbara Stevens Marilyn Wadsworth Bill Wissler Earl Baker was chosen Presidentg Duane Shank, Vice Presidentg and Donnie Miller, Secretary and Treas- urer. CThe girls certainly had very little representation!! The pleasures were favored by everyone in this class 4. Naturally, they thought a what they chose. The Freshie within the class, guests were first gathering for October and cozy, so thatls exactly limiting their love crushes To help the morale of and they planned their hay-ride would be nice girls tookadvantage of not invited. the class, it was decided to have a dance after a basketball game. This was a revclting night for the bashful Freshmen boys as some Cambridge boys took over the dance floor and made big hits with the gals. It was decided to make good use of the last party, which was on January 23, and a farewell party was held for Dick Rosser, who was departing from our school to go to Muncie. Only a short time and it was spring again. We had passed our first goal only to venture into another new field and discover ourselves to be proud Sophs. When our gang got together again, we looked around and discovered several old faces missing. Our class dropped from 40 to 55 members. During the year however, three newcomers lAlma Guettner, Barbara Swain and Betty Winchester! came to join our secluded Sophomore ranks, also, Dick Rosser just couldn't stay away from good 'ole C. H. S. any longer. The Sophomore Class elected Eileen Toschlog, Presidentg Juanita Davis,V1ce Presidentg Olive Ann King, Secretary and Don Miller, Treasurer. A Student Coun- cil was established and serving on it representing the Sophomcres were: Barbara Stevens. Jim King, Janice Spotts and Duane Shank. The Sophomore Year ended, summer passed by and School Days rolled around again. 50 Juniors out of 57 marched along together to face their new problems. We had lost 9 members, but gained 5 in return. It wasnlt long until a bright- eyed girl came to join us, Ellen Chance from Connersville, but Gaylene 0'Bayley and Nancy Chowning preferred to become housewives. The Juniors numbered 29. Junior Class President was Jim King, Don Miller was secretary and Janice Spotts, Treasurer. Juanita Davis replaced Janice Spotts on the Student Council. CLASS HISTORY, continued This was the year to make our money for the Senior Trip. We worked together strenuously. Our dance was after the first ball game. Then in January the 'big day came for the Skru-Ball Game. It seemed that the .Tunior girls proved to be the best athletes, but some of the Senior girls' outfits definitely stolethe show! The year to select class-rings. Rings were ordered by everyone and it was- nit long fthe first of Decemberj until each had his own ring in his possession. The class was sure a proud class as they flashed their rings around. lIt remain.- ed to be seen how many were missing within two weeks' time!! At the close of the school-term, the class realized that the next year they would become the leaders of the school and they fully intended to live up to the standard of being dignified Seniors. Fall, 1949, slow but sure, 27 Seniors enrolling in . Alma Guettner went to Whitewater for a few weeks, but then came back to CHS. Of the 28 graduates Juanita Davis, Jackie Hatfield, Jimmy Howell, Paul Kempton, Nonsa l!cGrew, Don- nie Miller, Marilyn Moyer, Cheryl Rau, Duane Shankand Barbara Stevens have spent the entire 12 years together here in Centerville. Big plans for the year were the details of the Senior Trip. This yearit was to include Washington, D. C., New'York City, Boston, Massachusettsas well as Niagara Falls and one night in Canada. The first 'get-together' was planned for the night of September 16. Rweryi- one that attended was busily engagedin eating all they possibly could. It was a Hamburger Fry at Lake Wehi. The motto was 'Always have a good time! To accumulate a little capital and to add to their own enjoymentthe class had their first dance after the thriller game with Spioeland on Friday November 18. Our dance was honor-edby the first performance of the 'Tempo Ten' orchestra. It was the pleasure of the Senior Class to have the honor of sponsoring a Christmas Chapel Program on Friday, December 16. Everyone seemed to have the 'Christmas Spirit' behind them and they all liked the program, and the Seniors tried to make this the best Chapel held this year. For a more detailed account of the activities of our class this year turn to the 'Day by Day' section. fcmxss WILL f 3:5 X by R K l MARILYN N ' 2 'S WADSWORTH We the Senior Class of Centerville High School, Centerville, Wayne County, Indiana, being of sound mind and dispensing memory do make and publish this our last will and testament. INDIANA may 24, 1960 The little town of Centerville hasn't changed much in the ten years since I departed. The shady streets, the quaint cld buildings, Jesse Bond still on the corner, all about the same as when I left. There is a new wing on the CHS bulld- ing and the city hass.new, more modern, set cf street lights. I stopped a moment on School Street to remember the days we had all spent together in the hallowed halls that housed the Bulldogs. Where were my classmates after ten years? My curiosity conquered me and! entered the doors of my alma mater to see if I could find a clue as to their whereabouts. Into the office I went Cthis time knowing that I mlcu1dn't be subject to a pink slipl and there was lr. Outland seated at the same desk. He arose and greeted me with a hearty hand shake. It once I started asking him questions about the members of the class of '5O. Here is a resumd of what he had to say: Bill Bolan attended Earlham. He majored in music and is now teaching at a high school in his home state of Kentucky. Jim finally took that Chance. He and Ellen have been married about five years and have one son. Jackie Hatfield married George McConahaas soon as he came back from Arizona and they now live on a farm south of town. Their two are both boys. Jimmy Howell graduated from Butler University and is coaching basketball in Marion, Ohio. He married Marge and she presented him with nothing but girls. Continued Herb Johnstonis one of the top catchers in the Major Leagues. Paul Kempton is working with his father on their farm near Centerville. He is still a bachelor, and says he plans to remain one. John Lakampis chief engineer for Studebaker llotors. John has had the honor ct setting the pace for the 500 mile classictor the past two years. He invented the Electro-gladius Obllquitousalator. It doesn't do anything, but their's is the only oar that has it. Norma llcGrew, better known as the second lady of Zmdiana, was elected to congress. During the year we lost our president, Walter Soper to Dennis Junior High in Richmond. In our Sophomore year we found ourselves pushedeut of the spotlight that we held as Freshmen, and quietly settled back to become an inconspicuous Sophomore class. Our officers were: President,Da1e Pentecost' Vice President, Paul Martin, Secretary Mary Spottsg Treasurer, Phyllis Resh. These, tohether with our spon- sors Mrs Subbell and Mr Overturf, led our class in sponsoring some of the social and entertainment highlights c the yearg the 'Sophomore Scoot', the class tour- ney and a dance held after the tourney. Our Englishand Literature classes traveled to Indianapolis with Miss Kimmel to see 'Oklahoma,' This year we gainedHareld.Jenkins, Donald Dale, Philip Jones, only to lose him later along with Dick Rabine, Willard Wadsworth and Jim Byrd. The Junior class of l9U9-50 is, we think, one of the best yet. We have added several new pupils to our group. They are Sarah Toney, Christina Chance, Russell Rudicel and Janet Thornburg. Ted Uondra was here for awhile but we lost him along with Don Schwab, Bob Rudd and Marvin Morris. Our class members have been active in the student oou cil all three years. Ours, which is an exceptionally large class, found being in high school not such a wonderful event as pupils from a larger school might. We had spent our Junior High years in the 'big bu11d5.ng', as it is called, and therefore we were accustomed to the routine of the building. upon entering the freshman class, we received four new members from nearby Abington which has an elementary school but no higher grades. We added three new members from families that had moved into Centerville. In the early part of this school year we had a hay-ride and near Christmas we held our first high school dance, with the title of the 'Parrago of !'rol1c.' Another dance of ours was named the 'January Jau.nt. Both were very successful. Hhs best of the year!! laturally, we had our faults but those are too few to mention! fO!'l0 we think! D One of our outstanding good points is our Freshman basketball team. All of our team are members of the second team and one of them is a member of the first team. Our Freshman team boys were a decisive factor in the winning of the second t68.m tourney. Members of our class entering from the Centerville Eighth Grade were: Maurice Baker Dick Davis Evelyn Gesell Shirley Harris Wanda Howell Vivian Mullins Ronnie Pennington Billy Beard Linda mdler Jane Gunn Billy Harrison Sonya Jones David Nuns Jerry Wickeriham Barbara Candle Linda Brly Loren Hamilton lanita Harvey Judy King Jeannine Spotts Martha Weaver Jim Clhlar Shirley Edwards Ronnie Harris Myron Higgins Clarence Mitchell Dale Temple Ruth Runyon The six new members were: Evelyn Jones, Paul Taylor, Clyde Reed, Irvin Toschlog from Abington: Barbara KBunnyJ Jones, from Bprlngportg and17uaneCombs from mgerstown. MAL'1-mzlesuw, I S lt P :Arrow UF In . - - I. I'. Wu A county seminary originallg occupied the ground where CHS now stands. This seminary was founded in 1 27 and had,dnr1ng1tsl1fe,such pupils as Lew Wallace and Oliver P. Morton. Due to an act of the legislature all county seminaries were sold, and the Wayne County Seminary then went to the Methodist Church which founded a college here in 1851 under the name of Whitewater College. Whitewater College continued until 1870 whenthegehcol trustees purchased the building for public use. The first annual commencement was held in l88b, the class consisted of two members, Etta Venard and Nora Gates. Etta Venard's family lived in the house now occupied by Mrs. Hlnkle. She was the daughter of Hr. 6 Mrs. Philip Venard and had 3 brothers and 6 sisters. One of the sisters was Andrew Dunbar's wife. Mrs. Paul 0'Neal is a niece of this first graduate of CHS. Miss Venard married Bill Hart and later moved to California where she died about two years ago. Nora Gates was the daughter of Mr. 6 Mrs. Jake Gates and together with two brothers they llvedjaxthe house in which Ed Shawhan now lives. She was married to Jim Morton and later to Harry Scott. She had two children. The last information we have been able to discover is that she moved to Dayton. CHS's original building burned in 1891 and the present grade building was constructed. The school became a commissioned high schoo11nl300. Our present high school building was built in 192k and ln 1927 a local civic group built our gymnasium. The gymnasium was purchased for the township in l9U7 by Township Trustee Roy Harris. PAST PRINCIPALS 1887-89 J. I. Heller 1889-92 P. J. Iuntz 1892-98 0.
