Our Science Courses Are Rich and Complete This laboratorv is the center of scientific activities in the High School. The Science Department is one of the most active organizations in the high school. There have been many new developments, including the acquisition of numerous pieces of new equipment and the remodel- ing of the lab itself. In the different departments, Mr. Huffman headed an extracurricular dissection class composed of boys interested in anatomy. This was the first activity of it's kind in Center- ville's history. Another first at Centerville was the 7: 15 physics class with Mr. Laird instructing. Mr. Huffman taught lab procedure to his chemistry classes, and his general science students were intro- duced to the lab and the basic prin- ciples of science. Biology students study plant and animal life. Senior Class Moments to Remember It was just 12 years ago that 40 timid little first graders started to school at Cl-lS5 this year that class is graduating 86 members. We have learned much during those years and gained experiences which will help to guide our paths the rest of our lives. Along with our senior year came thoughts of college, and careers, a more earnest effort to leam, and a realization of the responsibilities which will be placed on our shoulders after graduation. We've also enjoyed many good times during the year, but above all, we will remember two evenings in May. On May 22, our class and their dates spent the eveing dining and dancing on board the CHAPERON on a cruise up the Ohio River. Our last time together as a class--surely a time of happiness but yet also of regret. Then the next night, graduation, --the end of one life, and the beginning of another. We spent many hours to make it a memorable event, and, as it turned out, our efforts were not in vain. Then, our second money-making project was our Spring Dance. We had a great deal of fun choosing and ordering our class rings. It was an unforgettable stepping- stone in our lives. Our sophomore year was lots of work, but very rewarding. , ,.,. . ..,..,,. .,.,.-.. V Freshmen Find C.H.S. an Exciting New World F resnrnen We were initiated into Centerville High with a rip-roaring Freshman Week in October, climaxed by dog court which was sponsored by the seniors. Though they made it tough for us, we survived and even managed to introduce some intriguing new styles of dress. Our yearly class project was a candy sale. Their first performance, under the direction of Don E. Peiffer, was at the Montgomery County Fair. Another annual event in which they took part was the Miamisburg Halloween Festival Parade. The band worked long hours on their clever half-time shows for football games and although they were handicapped by Mr. Peiffer's absence due to illness, they continued with their performance under the guidance of Kirk Puter- baugh, student director. Class of 759 Improves Theatrical Ability In 1958, the Junior Class presented the comedy, Three Misses and a Myth. With Diana Bashford in the leading role, many amusing and strange situations were encoun- tered because of Merglethorpe, Diana's imaginary companion. The play was directed by Mr. Doan and Mrs. Starbuck with Jane Billett as student director. Then the following year a dramatics class was created with Mrs. Starbuck teaching. All the cast for the play was taken from this class, and rehearsal was held during dra- matics period. The students were also instructed in make up, and they put on skits for pep sessions and chapel for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. This was the first time that dramatics was made an academic subject rather than an extracurricular activ- ity with rehearsal after school. Everyone who saw the Senior Play agreed the rewards for this step forward were great. The class is made up of seniors the first semester and juniors the second: in this way we hope to find improved acting ability each year. Playing a Determined Game Succumbing after a hard-fought contest, drilling with in- tensity and returning to battle again, the Centerville Basket- ball Team had what most people would consider an unsuccess- ful season. However, the boxscore doesn't tell the complete Elk story. It can't convey the tenseness felt by Centerville as their team almost downed the highly rated Germantown five. Its figures fail to express the incredulity felt on the court and in the stands when the Elks lost to the Broncos from Jefferson in the last second of play. It misses the wave of desperation prevailing when the gun sounded leav- ing the score favoring Madison by five points. Perhaps this season can best be referred to as a year of learning, not only for the squad, but for the students who learned a loyalty to a team, not for their wins or losses, but for the fight and drive which they displayed in every game. We advanced to Class AA this year which made our competition very tough. We won the L.B. L. title by a margin of 30 points. We sincerely be- lieve that we would have won the state meet had we stayed Class A. In the Centerville Relays we were second and Trotwood-Madison was first. In the Trotwood-Madison Relay, we made as respectable per- formances as we did in the Xenia Invitational. All year long our trackmen gave 100470 effort in every meet. If America is to maintain its present leadership, we shall literally need thousands of well-educated young people with the vision, the imagina- tion, and the courage that our pioneers used in the conquest of the unknown. The future progress of our nation rests squarely upon how well its young people measure up to their responsibilities. This means that no matter what your ambitions may be . . . whether your particular talents fit you best for careers in medicine, business, engineering, finance, government, or the social sciences . . . great oppor- tunities await you in these fields if you qualify for leadership. Make full use of every opportunity for self-improvement and con- tinue your education all through life. Washington Township High School has given you an excellent foundation for your development into an admired and respected leader of the community.
