We extend our thanks to the people of Washington Township, who have again displayed their sincere interest in educationg to the Board of Education wholly and singly, who, through their foresight and plann- ing, have made this building and our opportunities for education poss- ible, and to Dr. A. V. Black and Mr. Ralph Woolpcrt, retiring members of the 1955 board, who have given so unselfishly of their services and leadership for eight years. K- 5311- f ,.-' If 25 3111 flllrmnriam Death ended the studies of Jan Rogers on the afternoon of june 13, 1955. He was a victim of the modern plague, a traffic fatality. Though many will say he was taken from us young, before he had an opportunity for accomp- lishment, this is not entirely true. jan had accomplished many things. One, above all others, stands Out. He had gained the honor, the respect, the love- of those with whom he had contact. In Ian, these things fused, making him that unusual person--a man apart. It was not just that the members of his sophomore class loved him, members of the other classes, his teachers, those about him in Hi-Y, those with whom he had business dealings also felt the same. His was a short life, lived with the warmth and direction that escape many of us in a long life- time. 26 F EEH EM R .,,,.... - N . 1-f J Q' WMC.-- A W. f' ,X --............ ,.,. -. VS WEST ALEX 'lhe Elks were defeated in their first game of the 1955 football season. They lost the opener to West Alex by a score of 6 to 0. The Elks completely out-manned the Blue Raiders on the ground, but couldn't push across to score. C.H. S. VS PIQUA CATHOLIC In our second game ofthe year, the school scoring record was broken. Centerville High be at Piqua Catholic 49-0. Don Gaiser opened the scoring by sneaking two yards for a touchdown. Our next score came on a five yard smash by Terry Yeazel. Phil Woolpert contributed the next twelve points on runs of two and fifty-five yards before the end of the half. In the third quarter, Kim Howe scored with twenty-five yards. Dick Weller drove over from the five yard line early in the fourth quarter. With seconds left in the game, Terry Yeazel scored the record breaking touchdown with a fifty yard run. C. H. S. VS BRADFORD Centerville battled hard, but just couldn't tally a score. The Railroaders scored just before the first 'half ended and again midway in the fourth quarter to beat us 13-0. The game was hard-fought, and each team featured a strong running attack. C. H. S. VS DIXIE The Elks completely dominated the rurming game and won 25-0 over Dixie. Dick Weller scored the first touchdown on a one yard plunge. Chet Akers hit Dick Boyle with a pass on the goal line minutes before the first half ended. Midway in the third quarter, Dick Weller again tallied, this time from fifteen yards out. Terry Yeazel ran ten yards around right end in the fourth quarter to give the Elks a 2-2 record. C. H. s. vs JEFFERSON Centerville won a real close 7-6 battle over the Broncos . The first half ended with the Elks trailing 6-0. Don Gaiser scampered seventy-five yards midway in the third quarter to tie the score. Norman Owen added the winning extra point. C.H. S. VS COVINGTON Hampered by injuries the Elks lost to the undefeated league champions 25-0. They put up a brave battle the first half, being on the short end of a 6-O score. In the second half, they were vulnerable to the Buccaneers attack who scored three touchdowns. C. H. S. VS GERMANTOWN Because of the injuries sustained from the Covington game, the Elks were an easy target for the Cardinals from Germantown. Many underclassmen were forced to play the game for Centerville. There were only four backs the second half, including two quarterbacks. They lost this one -by the lopsided score of 64-O. C. H. S. VS BROOKVILLE Centerville traveled to Brookville for their last league game of the year. They played much better against the Blue Devils , but still were defeated 34-0. C. H. S. VS NORTHWESTERN The Elks played a good Homecoming game, but came out second best, losing the last game 14-7. In the second period, they were within one yard of paydirt twice but couldn't score. The Comets scored both their touch- downs with just a few minutes left in the second and fourth periods, respectively. The 1956 Centerville Football Squad finished the season with a 3-6 record. The following week we traveled to Brookville and participated in the football premier along with three other bands. The marching band consisted of fifty-three playing members and seven majorettes. Barbara Mehaffie was the head majorette. The band appeared at all the home and away games, and presented many colorful half time shows. Probably the most outstanding half time show was the Salute to Sousa . At the end of the football season, two band members who had played football, rejoined the concert band. On December 20, the band gave its first annual fall concert. Paula Zimmerman played a solo on the bass horn, and Steve Paul played a piano solo. Many members of the band participated in the District Solo and Ensemble Contest held at the OSSO home at Xenia, Ohio, on Saturday, March 10. The band entered the band contest held at Fairview High School in Dayton on March 24. Early in April, the band pre- sented a spring concert, and on April 23, it presented a concert for the P.T.A. The band was under the direction of Mr. Don Peiffer. The projects for the year centered around accumulating enough points to make fifteen of the members eligible for the trip to Washington and New York in the spring and for the Hundred Point Club of the Dayton Council on World Affairs. The year's activities included a fall banquet with a guest speak- er, a program centered around five Mexican students, and panel discussions on the problems of Germany and France. The club received second place in the county for its dis- play during United Nations week in October, and it ranked second in the county for its contribution to a project for orphans in Brazil. 72 VM? There are twelve students who began and are ending th'eir school days at Centerville. They are: Gary Cornell, Charles Dieckman, Don Gaiser, Norma Gregg, Danny Grove, Carol Hunter, Richard Huss, jerry Magsig, June Miller, Janet Shaw, Larry Wilson, and Dave Wildermuth. In the second grade, we made several new acquaintances. The new members were Christina Green, Evelyn Green, Phyllis Lutes, Pete Umbenhauer and Bill Pease. We received only one new member in the third grade. He was Phillip Woolpert. This year we were taught how to multiply and divide. Everyone had a lot of fun with our teacher, Mrs. Burnett. At the beginning of the fourth grade, we welcomed two new members to our class. They were Mariada Davis and Norman Owen. This year we had our first geographical studies and, now, we can truthfully admit we hated it! We received no new members our fifth year, but we were pretty occupied playing baseball and basketball and building snow forts with our teacher, Miss Delaney. This year we, again, received no new members. We added a lot to our knowledge - thirty-two prepositions, more history and geography, and, of course, mathematics. We had our fun, though, by fighting wars with the uppity seventh graders. Finally, the big moment arrived! We became a part of the junior High School, and that meant changing classes and attending pep assemblies. john Payne was the only member to join us that year. Beginning with the eighth grade, we admitted more new members each year. This year we were honored with five new acquaintances. They were: Ray Goins, Mary Huffman, De Ann Kindle, Barbara Paul and Arlene Stuckey. Our Freshman year, a great many of us were intensly in- terested in Latin. It could have been because of the BIG Latin Banquet in the spring! That year, our new members consisted of Rose Marie Lombardo, Naida Magee, the twins, Bob and Bill Reber, Dick Boyle and Joni McComb. During our Sophomore year, we added five more Chara- cters to our present list. They were Charles Akers, Jeannie Carter, Liz Hathaway, Jeanette Howard, and Dick Weller. The size of our Latin class was cut considerably when Miss Schneider, who really knows Latin, came. Many interesting things happened when we were juniors. We presented A Little Honey - our class play. In the spring, we gave a very delightful banquet and prom for the Seniors. We re- ceived three new members that year. They were Vincent Mantia, Gary Monce, and Adam Zengel. Our Senior year has been an extremely busy one. We have all been studying hard and looking forward to college. We pre- sented A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court , as our class play. Mr. Doan directed it. The prom given by the juniors was most enjoyable. We'll always remember it along with all the other good times we've had at Centerville! 76 J M ' ,Jv- 2 .'. ' sl x s , I 9 '44 ' E iw An - 1 Q z M fi 4 ms Ni ws. . SF. ,,, way. .
