His sudden foreword You, the students and friends of Centerville High School, are about to see interpreted for you, life at our High School during 1947-1948. As you journey through the pages, you will scan faculty know-hows, classes in ac- tion, sports' ups and downs, fun hours and play moments, plus remembrances of the class of 1948 with a glimpse into these graduates' future life. The Cehiscan Staff has attempted to picture vividly and lastingly a few memories of this forty-first year at Centerville. If, in a measure, we have accomplished this, then our time and efforts have been well rewarded. LOIS SHOW Editor-in-Chief ili EE WE MLW-'! ' awww SW am ggi? I 7 ll F' ii q Hl'h L if 4 'v' -'.r -F , ' I U. S. ROUTE 40- THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY Typical of Life's Highway is old U. S. 40, known to many as the National Pike. It began as a trail, became a famous tho1'oughfare. As a pioneer, it served the pioneers well. Its curves have been straightened, its hills, leveled, its surface, smoothed: its roadbed, strengthened-it serves the modern day well. Our lives begin and follow through much like the trans- formation of an Indian trail to a modern highway. Characteristic of this life are: birth, growth, education, service, readjustment, and continued education and training making possible greater service until one finally disappears beyond the western horizon. Be cautious of the many side roads, dangerous curves, steep hills, and detours. Obey the laws, observe the signs, drive Carefully. T H E R O A D By FRED J. TO THE STUDENTS OF TODAY- THE BUILDERS OF TOMORROW If you gaze from our high school windows you will see the Old National Road being rebuilt to serve the needs of this new era. Just as historic Route 40 must be reconstructed to make it more useful to mankind, so you also must rededicate yourself to meet the challenge of the day. Now is the time to build-build your dreams to realities. Forget you are a rugged individualistf' live and work in har- mony. Remember, the leader of today may be the sage of tomorrow. Plan and build your highway to serve you well, so that in the years to come you can reflect on your road of life with pride, knowing your efforts have been fruitful-knowing that you have grown while serving the estate bequeathed to you by your fore, fathers just as the Old National Road has done. f X eflww Q faculty James Adamson Beallsvllle Penna Cdllforma State Teachers College Chief Carpenter ln the shop Emll Bernowskl Monongahela Penna Duquesne Umversxty Emment conductor of Centervxlles Mus1ca1e Orgamzatxon Centervllle Penna Drexel Instxtute of Technology BS Noted d9S1 gner and seamstress Joseph Belhsarlo Cokeburg Penna Lallforma State Teachers Co1legwB S Famed chemxst and Monlca M Coyne bnologxst Umontown Penna State Teachers College Indlana BS Champlon speed bullder of commerclal skxlls u J .
