We? 5, - We dedicate the 1957 Black Diamond to the man who has done more for Center- ville and has meant more to the Centerville schools than any other individual - Everett William Fannon. In doing so, we seek to honor a man who began his teaching career in a one-room rural schoolhouse and went on to become the dean of Iowa superintendents. After heading Centerville schools for 34 years and being principal of the high school for five years before that, Mr. Fannon plans to retire in August, 1957. Recently honored as the oldest superintendent in Iowa serving the same school dis- trict and recipient of the distinguished service alumni award from Drake University, Mr. Fannon was born in 1889 in Eldora, Iowa. He attended high school there and then re- ceived his B. A. degree from Drake. He has done post-graduate work at the Universities of Iowa, Chicago, and Drake. Before coming to Centerville in 1918, Mr. Fannon toured the country for three years as achautauqua and lyceum singer, then was superintendent of schools at Liscomb, Iowa. He has served twice as vice president of the Iowa State Teachers Association, has been an active member of Rotary and other service groups in Centerville. He was president of the country club and five times city golf champion. A long-time member of the Presbyterian church, for 22 years he was choir director. He has also been chairman of civic music here, Mr. Fannon met Mrs. Fannon, then Bessie Mae Tatham, while both were students at Drake. They were married in 1914. A graduate of the Fine Arts College, Mrs. Fan- non taught art before coming to Centerville. Here she has been an active member of the Outlook and Women's clubs, P.E. O. , and the Presbyterian church, The Fannons have a daughter and three grandchildren, all of Crawfordsville, Ind. Two sons died. The daughter, Muriel, is now Mrs. John Brock and teaches kindergarten in Indiana. May 7, 1889, E. W. Fannon was born in Eldora, Iowa 1908 - - - - High School graduation 1913 ----- B. The artist has talented, creative handsg the workman has strong, powerful handsg the man whose life is filled with reverence has hands folded in prayerg your closest friend has hands outstretched to help you. Because of their symbolic importance, we have chosen hands for the theme of the 1957 Black Diamond. Through the book hands will point the way to memories of your school year. --Black Diamond Staff FACULTY CLASSES ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS LIFE ADVERTISERS FACULTY ffwudyzomtdes I take great pride in Centerville High! It has been a great democratic institution, It has been a major instrument in our com- munity for bringing together allof the chil- dren of all of the people and for helping each to take his place as a contributing member of our democratic enterprise. In nearly forty years of very close con- nection with Centerville High, l have seen the school grow in perspective and creation. There has been a steady growth in the of- ferings to meet the needs of a changing world. May it never become static but al- ways mobile and continue to serve as it has for eighty years. On CHS! 1 E. W. FANNON CARL T. MILES As individuals we should expect returns from our education harmonious with the thought, time, self-discipline, and energy we put into it during the days of formal schooling and during the period of growth and habit-fixing which follows schooldays. Our hearts and our minds should now be dedicated to an honorable and satisfying philosophy of life and to suitable fields of work. The foundation lies in the ability to think problems through on one's own initi- ative, and to learn how to make construc- tive use of one's abilities and opportunities. How is your foundation? CLASS Look out, here comes Poof, Skeet. i?57 S ' Seniors think election news is pretty neat. F3 My ':53l:,fQ.5 51 sw, tm rm am, A freshman class is like the baby New Year, full of big ideas for the future, but not quite dry behind the ears. And yet - like the New Year - a high school class does grow up' over a period of time. When the class of '57 began the senior year, Gary Williams, Otis Seals, Dorothy Walker, and Phil Anders were chosen as officers. The sponsors were Mr. Richard Bunt- ing, Mrs. Alison Escher, Mrs. Lillian I-Iowry, Mr. Joe Nelson, and Miss Hulda Stom- berg. Money for senior activities was raised by a banking plan where each senior had his own savings account. Then along towards the end of the year, the class began to age, As seniors, the members of the class of '57 felt as old as Father Time. They were ready to look back on their school years - remembering. As one senior said, As you think of Commencement Day, when you march down to receive the long-sought diploma, you feel a thrill of pride. . . and still something tugs at your heart, a lump comes in your throat, and a tear in your eye, for with the passing of that day, the class of '57 becomes a part of the past and the joys of high school are over. Pote It always takes a while for freshmen to get used to a new school and for the school to get used to the freshmen. . . but it all starts at CHS on Orientation Day. After that, the new students begin to find out that the teachers are really pretty nice persons to know and that even the upperclassmen are human part of the time. This year's freshman class chose as their officers: Steve Greenleaf, presidentg Patsy Walker, secretaryg Marilyn Mitchell, treasurer. Their sponsors were Miss Mildred Christenson, Miss Jean Foot, Miss Ethel Linden, Mr. Don Henneger, and Mr. Robert Wharton. Led by their officers and pushed by their sponsors, they organized themselves into an active class. To raise money they decided to collect dues from each member rather than use an organized project. They danced at the fourth annual Freshman-Sophomore mixer in the fall and had a skating party and a picnic in the spring. Even the upper- classmen have to admit that the class of 1960 has made a good start and can'1ook for- ward to three more happy years. This year the CHS students, interested in the study of mathematics, together with Robert Taylor, high school math instructor, formed the Euclidean Club. This club af- fords its members an opportunity to study, read, and talk about mathematical infor- mation which cannot be covered in the mathematics classes because of the limited class time. One of the goals of the Euclidean Club is to interest students of CHS in the study of mathematics and to encourage them to enter that field of study. The members visited the freshman math classes giving talks about higher mathematics and telling the students on what ways the study of mathematics is a background for various professions of today. The Euclidean Club members plan to do bigger things next year both in adding to membership and in having more activities. It is written and edited by junior English students who have an interest in journalism. The paper is printed in the Centerville Iowegian each Wednes- day evening. During the past year, the staff met fourth hour every day to plan and write the paper. They were under the guidance of Miss Hulda Stomberg. The paper included news from classes and clubs, sports news, feature articles about students and teachers, and a human interest column called Tidbits. W, Fannon initiated an over-all change in Centerville 's physical education program. lt was Mr. Fannon 's belief that better health might be had from more active exercise. Today there are approximately 385 C. H, S. students in gym classes in addition to the students participating in athletics and cadette drill. Five teachers are employed as class supervisors. The gym classes have a well-balanced program including such sports as swimming, volleyball, dancing, tumbling, and bas- ketball. Physical examinations have been given every fall since this program began, and Mantoux tuberculin tests were given this year, More than 200 freshmen, new students, and athletes took part in the annual physicals. Mantoux tests were given to 1, 096 grade and high school students. The 95 posi- tive reactors were given chest x-rays at the hospital and the report went to the family physician. These tests were made available to all students whose parents signed for it. This was a county wide program, sponsored and financed by the Appanoose County Christmas Seal fund under the supervision of the County Medical Society. In the high school a day was given to the sale of Christmas Seals. Dr. Hickman and Miss Olson, school nurse, Girls' basketball is recreation. give Mantoux tests. After getting off to a slow start by losing to Chariton 32-0, they bounced back and ended up with a 5-3-1 record, Centerville, however, beat Chariton 6-0 in their quarter at the Jamboree in Knoxville. Leading scorer, Joe Kovacevich, racked up 68 points always battering out substantial gains, and Larry Crowell led the team in passing. Open field running was provided by halfbacks Scurlock, Davis, and sophomore Bob Thomas. Dick Bunting, the Big Reds coach, installed both the T and the single wing, alternating them according to the defense. Pro- viding the blocking for these offenses were senior linemen: Condra, Buttell, Irwin, Chebuhar, Vidmar, and Brinegar. The co-captains for the Big Reds this year were two outstanding linemen. Sharing most of the playing this season were: Centers: Larsen and Wells, For- wards: Brooks, Bailey, Connor and Hindley, Guards: Crowell, Scurlock and Davis. Because of a lack of size, only one man over six feet, and a fair amount of speed, a double offense was installed this fall, trying to make use of the over all team speed and shooting ability. Against a zone defense the team used a 1-3-1, as well as an over loaded offense, always taking advantage of every chance for a fast break. Defensively the team used a wide assortment of defenses, relying on 1-2-2 zone and switching man to man. At 'times 1-3-1 and 2-1-2 zones were used as well as zone press and man to man press. With only two returning lettermen, Paul Scur- lock and Larry Crowell, a rebuilding program was in order. At various times 9 of the 15 men have had starting assignments, a situation which makes the future look bright for the Big Reds. Allen scored as high as 30 points in one game this season. Others seeing much action were Harry But- ler, Lyle Linder, Rex Brown, Bob Harbour, Dale Barger and Bob Thomas. Coach Jerome, although adding some twists of his own, used the same basic offense as the varsity. He stuck mainly to a man to man defense although using a zone defense occasionally. The honored Q , hd f' guests, wearing togas, were second year Latin students. The slaves, first year Latin students, wore tunics. It was the ides of March. N The slaves attended the guests, served them and entertained them. A play entitled 'Somnium' was performed, following by dancing girls and music. A gladiatorial combat was also held for the honored guests. Lyle Linder and Suzanne Stuber were master and mistress of ceremonies. 'Cena est paratus announced a slave, and dinner was brought in. Ecce bovem, and the guests beheld the beef. Next year the slaves will be the honored guests. The sponsor of the festivities was Mildred Christensen, Latin teacher and librarian, whose tragic death in a traffic accident May 6 shocked the school and stunned her Latin classes. She will be remembered for her kindly manner and gentle ways. She preferred southern Iowa for her home and is buried in a cemetery near Numa. s t ,L i , it 2 fl rt 1 as i , ,W . - IMMQGYZR tg' , X annul Q I 5 V I 'Fi 3 F v- '- 2 pf .. so t ' K K qu.- r Ig' J I X .. t. y X X X 2 s Q l .xg X I 5 ss s ig, NSS Q' ss, e ' SN tai 770214 '7awa wffgfww 2 '26 At the annual Black Diamond dance held Friday evening, March 29, in the high school gym, Terry Connor and Peggy Baker were crowned Black Diamond king and queen.
