Fannon received some good ideas for the Centerville Schools at a Superintendents' convention in Des Moines. Ag. classes I and II spent an enlightening day at the Bloomfield field day. But Bloomfield was a sore spot with the Little Reds who suffered their first defeat under them. Drama got under way as Mr. Hart selected the cast for the junior Class play W'e Shook the Family Tree. And for the first time in many years the mixed chorus vv as established on a representative basis as it elected officers. All the freshmen and new students were given physicals. And the FHA girls attended a district meet at Corydon. CHS had good cause to be proud at the Fort Madison game. Although the football boys lost their first game. an all-out campaign was conducted for the Crusade for Freedom. A beautiful half-time exhibition was put on by the mixed chorus and the band. And collection from the giving at school and at the game amounted to 512696. The Student Council started making big plans for Home- coming and before long the candidates for Homecoming Queen were nominated. The Southern Harmonaires received a warm reception from CHS as they presented a musical program of Negro spirituals. And hard as they tried. the Big Reds couldn't beat Knoxville. Nevertheless, the band was well received in their half-time exhibition there. Surprised looks were given some FFA boys with green hands pinned on their backs. But the cause of alarm was only their initiation into that organization. Actual practice was given the office practice and advanced shorthand girls who worked for local business men two afternoons a week for tvvo or three months. Parents of CHS'ers received a bulletin from the prin- cipal's office which discussed pupils' study habits. And soon CHS was going all-out for Homecoming. Although the rain dampened the bonfire. the football team vv as given a rousing pep rally the night before. And miracle of all miracles -after a week of rain. the day of Homecoming dawned as clear as a bell. The parade was a tremendous success. and fQHS'ers gladly paid homage to Queen Shirley at half-time, Although the boys couldn't break that losing streak. the spirits at the dance didn't seem to be dampened. lt was good to see CHS alumni again, Vacation for the students. but not the teachers, vv as obtained when the teachers attended the county institute. Music once more came forward as some music students went to Ames to try out for all-state and made it. Inclustrious juniors and seniors gave their zuluulzle time to help solicit for the community chest drive. And along the line of industry. band members soliciting nantes for the band calendar. The story of South Pacific was told and sung in a lyceum by Miss Bobbie. And the senior girls were entertained at the annual PEO teas. Some new members of Y-Teen were pretty embarrassed in the get-up they had to wear as part of their initiation into that organization. And so the days got colder and Cl-lS'ers got busier. ' . 1:. let us give thanks Y-Teen chapel Black Diamond FOOTBALL 1952 A first class rating for the 1951 Black Diamond awarded by the National Scholastic Press Association warmed the hearts of CHS'ers. even though the ele- ments presented different feelings. The high spirits were continued as the juniors balloted for their class president and other officers. The Fairfield Trojans interrupted the pattern by trouncing our Big Reds to the tune of -46-0. Taffy for sale! Taffy for sale! Yes, 1,000 pounds of salt water taffy, purchased by the seniors, to be sold for greater profits thus enabling the seniors to make their trip to Chicago. More money changed hands as the junior Red Cross drive netted S5-4.59. The FFA also came in for their share of the profit as they reported S15 was garnered from pop corn sales at the games. With the temperatures slowly dropping in mid-No- vember the class thermometers in the trophy case were slowly rising indicating the percentage of sales of yearbooks in the various classes. Wfhen the smoke had cleared the seniors and sophomores emerged as best buyers. Gridiron enthusiasts saw the season end with the Big Reds subduing arch rival Albia 15 6 The gamc was a hard fought battle but a spirit of friendship was detected at the Sock Hop with Albn students as guests Be Wise as the Owls was the theme the Librarians Club used in highlighting their display during Na- tional Book XX'eek. Hunger pangs vanished a little quicker as the students now had only to travel to the cafeteria for the noon lunch. Programs for the remainder of the semester were planned by the Honor Society during a noon meeting. And the juniors stole the spotlight as they gave a grand performance of the junior class play XY'e Shook the lfamily Tree. Thespians again graced our stage. this time in the form of the marionette show Snow XY'hite and the Seven Dwarfs. Proceeds from this event went to the l'HA. The girls celebrated National FHA XY'eek with a full program, including coffee for the teachers, a window display in a local store and an attractively decorated trophy case display. A solemn note was struck when the Y-Teens pre- sented the religious Thanksgiving Chapel. After this it was vacation. turkey, and more turkey. Iiight CHS musicians spent the holidays in Des Moines at the annual concerts of band, orchestra and chorus in which they had a part. Basketball seemed to highlight the closing of the year ln a game with the Pella Dutchmen the varsity was defeated 34 20 but the Little Reds started their winning ways with a 44 39 victory Three days latcr victory came to the boys as they out defensed Trenton Missouri 28 24 Squeaking through also were the Littlt Reds by the score of 32 31 It wasnt all basketball however as the FHA told in chapel form how to help others and how the FHA functions Nice bit of teamwork in action As the title picture indicates the entire music depart ment presented the outstanding musical program of the year Featured were the boys choir girls glee club mixed chorus soloists and the band And the Xmas parties started with the Y-Teens enjoying themselves. To keep things on an orderly basis the Honor Society heard a panel discussion on Parliamentary Rules. January ACTIVITIES Black Diamond Happy New Year! And the Redettes opened the new year with a resounding 42-40 victory over Corydon. The Librarians Club again went into action by hav- ing Miss Thelma Kirkpatrick, city librarian, speak to the members on becoming a librarian. Lovilia thoroughly trounced our Redettes by the score of 72-37. The same night the Big Reds tasted defeat at the hands of Bloomfield 36-23. With mixed emotions the students received their individual pictures. Mildred Adams, CHS student from the Canal Zone, and Gwen Seddon, student from Argentina, presented a very informative program to the FHA girls. The two students gave interesting talks on Panama and South America. Parliamentary rules were discussed at the Honor Society meeting. And Abe Lincoln in Illinois was chosen as the all-school play. With students vying for the role of Abe, others were being nominated as candi- dates for Black Diamond King and Queen. Again the Big Reds lostg this time to Seymour 48-40. Knoxville also won 65 45 The Redettes also lost t Knoxville 56 30 Still in search of their third victory the Big Reds dropped a close 35 31 decision to Albia On january 18 the semester closed. One hundred seventy-three semester honor cards were received by 115 CHS students. A Student Iowegian reporter deemed it necessary to report the pro and con of the U. M. T. question. Fol- lowing this the National Guard of Centerville talked to the senior boys. And 22 letters were awarded to football players at the first victory chapel. In another department the art students prepared their work to enter the Scholastic contest and the Latham Foundation Poster Contest. To bring about better noon study conditions, the student council studied the problem and drew up a new set of rules. The ever-functioning student council also paved the way for an exchange of chapels with Bloomfield. Our principal in keeping abreast with the times attended the principals' meet in Fairfield. Q . . - March ACTIVITIES Black Diamond ln the spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love-so the picture indicates. But, the month of March is a busy one with all pupils working to finish the second six weeks with flying colors. I To prove that it was a full month the FFA boys met on March 6, for their regular meeting. The librarians also met and came up with the attractive bulletin board idea, Which Shoe Fits You? , and the FHA gals traveled to the state conference in Des Moines for a two-day meet. This just goes to show that all the edu- cation isn't gotten in the classroom-a broader con- cept is gained by meeting and talking with fellow workers from across the state. Following this conference at Des Moines, the dele- gates reported to the local members during the regular meeting. On this very same day, only in another part of the building, the new members were being initiated into the Honor Society, and the band, in preparing for its spring contests, presented the spring concert before the public. A week later this same group traveled to Bloomfield for a return performance. Later in the day the musicians continued their trek to Kirksville, Mis- souri, to present an afternoon concert. The annual FFA father and son banquet went off with amazing smoothness. And the FHA girls had their hands in it also-The-1' cooked and served the dinner. A few days later two sophomores, Sally and Bobby, astounded their fellow CHS'ers by being crowned Black Diamond Queen and King. Despite the unfavorable weather of sleet, snow, and slush, the Black Diamond Dance was acclaimed the success of the year. The Carrolls gave the student body some top-notch entertainment as they presented their Parade of Masques, and Groucho Marx, Bette Davis, etc., all looked very much like the real McCoy. The final event of this month, the Pre-State Music Contests at Corydon, gave definite indications of what is to come in the month to follow. CHS did right well with almost a lllll per cent in the number one class. Bob Roach, feature writer for Listen magazine and member of the Iowa Temperance League, presented an outstanding assembly on the subject Narcotics. The question-answer periods in the classrooms after the assembly were rather informative and fascinating. The weekend following, the track squad took part in the state indoor meet at Iowa City. And the boys in ide plans for the closing meeting of the ye tr 'lhe Librtrians ilso met and as usual came up with i catchy method of selling the book to the reader vit the bulletin board FFA On lhursd my the ith, many proud parents watched their boys and girls from thc high school go through the games and gymnastics at the physical education demonstration. The next evening the big ones had a chance to recall what they were like when in the grades. The regular monthly meetings of the FHA and the Honor Society went off as usual with the respective groups making plans for the closing of the school year. And the Valley Relays at Des Moines and Cardinal Relays at Clarinda kept our boys running on successive weekends. On the same weekends CHS golfers teed off against Ottumwa and Albia. The sounds of vocal and instrumental notes became clearer as the ditc of the state music contest loomed in the not too distant future To close the month the music dcpirtment journeyed to Valley High of Des Moines for the state HILL! But the month of May was a full one. Un the initial day the lmoys with their putters and drixers tied for low score with the golfers from Ottumwa Catholic. Opening day was important for the Lihrarians as they held their regular meeting. 'lhe FHA hoys also held their final meeting of the year. 'I'he teachers also came in for their share in the final get-together when they elected federation officers at the Slay morning lvrealx- fast. CHS musicians put the final touches to a year of music when the large groups tied for numher one ratings at the state finals. Again the seniors performed for the last time hefore the footlights as they presented an outstanding xersion of Um' pl-01171. The vocational department exhihited their products in an interesting show open to the puhlic. ln the sports world the gold squad traseled to Knoxyille for the conference meet. Memhers of the Honor Society and FHA also met for the final meetings. XY'ith the month swiftly drawing to a close. the seniors readied themselyes for the senior chapel and the annual senior picnic. The junior-senior prom was proclaimed a tremendous success as the seniors closed a year of actiye participation. On Sunday. May 25. the seniors listened to the serious thoughts emitted at the haccalaureate serxice. lhurstlay the 19th was approached with mixed emo- tions as the seniors receixed congratulatory messages amid tears of joy and sorrow, Une by one they w ended their way across the stage to receive their diplomas at the 1952 commencement exercises.
