Max Bandy scored the first touchdown of the season by travelling 75 yards. Bill Jerome bucked the line for 6 more and Dick Pownall place kicked the extra point. The boys as a whole showed great possibility of developing into a great team. C. H. S. 19, BLOOMFIELD 12 Turning on all their power for the initial home game, the Reds obtained a 19-0 lead at the start of the last quarter. A sudden passing attack netted the visitors 12 points against Red substitutes in the last quarter. Bandy, Pownall and Dutch Donahue scored. BIG REDS 18, CORYDON 0 Centerville remained undefeated by giving Corydon their first defeat of the season. A slip- pery field and steady downpour most of the game helped the Reds in keeping their lighter opponents' speedy offense in hand. Pownall GREENWOOD DOOLEY lead the scoring with 13 points and Max Bandy collected 6 points. LaVerne Fowler and John Greenwood stood out in the line. REDS 7, FORT MADISON 0 The Reds enjoyed their fourth straight win of the season and obtained revenge over Fort Madison, who gave the Reds their first defeat last season. Bandy got the only touchdown of the evening by travelling, untouched, 40 yards to pay dirt early in the third quarter. Pownall booted the extra point. Linemen Keith Morrow, John Greenwood and Joe Dafflitto, the back- field play of Bill Jerome and Pownall, and the quarterbacking of 'Dutch Donahue, were all outstanding for Centerville. CENTERVILLE O, OTTUMWA 31 After enjoying a week's lay-off with an open date, the Reds woke up to find themselves in the middle of a fast track meet, as the un- defeated Ottumwa High School gave the Reds their worst defeat in two seasons. This being the only defeat of the season, we won't say any more about this game. JEROME POWNALL BANDY LOTRIDGE DAFFLITTO CENTERVILLE 19, CHARITON 7 The Reds traveled to Chariton to win one of the roughest games of the season. Jerome, Jim Peterson, and Donahue shared scoring honors with a touchdown apiece. Pownall's punting and line plunges and Jerome's running were outstanding. John Greenwood and La Verne Fowler played commendably in the line. CENTERVILLE 19, FAIRFIELD 0 The Reds took their last trip of the season as they traveled to Fairfield and subdued the Tro- jans, but definitely. After a scoreless first half, the Reds came back with plenty of pep and determination to punch over 3 T. D.'s. Pownall smashed over for two of these and Bandy re- turned a punt for the third. Pownall got off one of the longest punts of the season, 60 yards in the air. Jerome played a bang-up game in the backfield as did Capt. Jim Dooley. CENTERVILLE 0, ALBIA 0 With both teams being very evenly match- ed, the annual Albia-Centerville game ended FOWLER DONAHUE in a scoreless tie. Both teams played ex- cellent ball, with he Reds in Albia territory most of the evening. But old lady luck just wasn't with the home team and the breaks went against them when scoring opportunities were available. Pownall went 20 yards for the longest run of the game. He did most of the running for the Reds and also turned in one of his best punting performances. Jerome play- ed a brilliant defensive game and was throw- ing blocks all over the field. Fowler was the big standout in the line. He also played some in the backfield. Thus ended the most successful season, as far as records go, that Centerville has enjoyed since 1935. This year's team is rated as one of the smoothest working elevens the school has had. In winning six games, losing one and tying one, the Reds amassed a total of 95 points to their opponents' 50. Linemen Fowler and Grindle, both Juniors, Capt. Dooley and halfback Pownall all received honorable men- tion on the I. D. P. A. ALL STATE TEAM. Pownall and Fowler also received honorable mention by the Des Moines Tribune.
