Dear Students, Athletics, the pursuit of excellence. i I think we are always happy to pay tribute to excellence but in our complex society it becomes increasingly harder to identify individual excellence. But with the athlete it remains clear. He cannot fake, he cannot cheat, he can- not use others, or hide behind them. Every time the athlete performs his excel- lence is on display for everyone to see and criticize. I I The character traits of the athlete are also on display - his ability to control his emotions - his poise - his respect for school, team mates and opponents - his pride and determination - his desire to succeed. I hope that all the athletes at Center South can display both excellence and character throughout High School and life. Sincerely, 60-Zh-A ' Coach Glavin Dear Students, Center South has reason for a feeling of pride in its young men. Today as in the years gone by, Center South has proven that sports and school belong together in the development of a solid personality, a growing up from boyhood to manhood. A man is bom, someone said, when the things he wants to do are replaced by the things he must do. Sports help bring this part of life into focus. Most boys like to play, but not every boy wants to do what must be done to be a team player. Sacrifice for a cause, devotion to the team, a willingness to blend your own talents into a common effort for a greater good. These are essential to sports and to life. As a coach, I feel a great pride in our sports program at Center South. This is not a pride nurtured by the defeat of our oppo- nents, it is a pride that comes from hard work, team spirit, devotion, and striving to overcome adversity. I have always told our 8th grade teams that if we play our best, win or lose, we have succeeded in our quest for achievement. There is a feeling of ac- complishment that only those who participate in sports can experience. When you set a goal, work hard and long to achieve that goal, face an opponent with the same feelings and determination, when you achieve a measure of success against a worthy oppo- nent, you know what success really is. No true athlete wants a victory unfairly gained. It takes good citizens to make good players. Good school citizens make the best players. Men who know that the only true road to success is the road of faimess and sportsmanship are assets to their team, their school, and themselves. Center South has given its young men an opportunity to gain honor for themselves and their school, to express themselves as individuals and as members of a team. The Fighting Center South Redskins, a name everyone can be proud of! Sincerely, Coach Bland

He learns what it takes to succeed and that in order to suc- ceed he must work harder, overcome adversity, and constantly strive to become better at what he is doing. Ultimately, he experiences the satisfaction of having worked for something and succeeded. It is my hope that the young men who play football, basket- ball, and track at Center South develop this intense desire to succeed and Be The Best. Sincerely, gf Coach Bradshaw Dear Students, f'-2 . . Dear Students, One of the lessons leamed in sports is the fact that we suc- ceed mamly through superior performance. Elements of luck sometimes enter the picture, but in main it is perfonnance. Per- formance can only be improved through drills or fundamentals commonly known as practice. An athlete may have great phy- sical and mental potential, but very poor skills through lack of proper and sufficient practice. You cannot be rewarded in ath- letics because you have great potential, but only if these poten- tlals can be used to produce superior performances. As a student at Center South, can you see how these prin- ciples apply to your classroom work? You should be able to. Sincerely, Coach Speise , Discipline is one of the most important? qualities a person may acquire from parti- cipation in athletics. Without discipline many important things that a person attempts .--.--,...,.. ..f. .....,-,.,..----- may never be achieved. Athletics demand discipline in the way one acts, talks, appears, and works. Dis- cipline is to be respected as a goal worth attaining by most people in the United States. Evidence of this is the tremendous support given to all sports across our country. Millions of sports fans do not have the ability or the discipline required to partici- pate in athletics. However, the fans respect those who have the ability and the discipline required for the rigors of athleticfcompetition. Many of the boys who pass the athletic program at Center South will acquire the discipline to become very successful in later years. Without discipline that is leamed by sacrifice, dedication and hard work, chances are that he will not be as successful as his aspirations. Don't cheat yourself. Always work to be a winner. It will improve your chances at being whatever you desire in life. Sincerely, Y! vfvuulf- ff Zfydld Coach Frazier 9
