He must be dedicated to the sport, willing to sacrifice to achieve his goal, a hard hitter that likes contact, and one that can take a hard hit in return. Here at Center South we have been fortunate in having many such fine young men. This is apparent by the number of boys from Center South now playing on our high school teams. I feel that this year we will again furnish our high school with many promising athletes from our teams. It is indeed a pleasure to coach the young men that represent our school. Cffjffpcgk' ' ,h Coach Glavin Students, Through athletics an immature young boy without a sense of accomplishment, Without a realization of his abilities, without a true sense of dedication, and without any real idea of what it takes to succeed, can become an able, successful, dedicated and accomplished young mall. An athlete learns that winning and success come only from an intense desire to win and a willingness to sacrifice for it. The world is full of mediocre people and people who are satisfied to be only average. It might be said that an average person is the best of the poor and the worst of the good. Anybody can be a loser. It takes guts and desire to be a winner, both in athletics and in life itself. It is my hope that our athletes have developed the type of attitude that drives them to QQ THE BEST. Sincerely, I rf i' X. M Don Bradshaw I S-5513 1 .EE E, y :Qi .jglill fzii :': f 2 t v- F 111' 1 Qi' i s ..f'+1f5iE?hT9' , 54 La My ww ! , ,Ai It il .L 'ltglgil - .M . A e is----A i 2 I- i F --' i 5, 1 Dear Students, . Often people try to attain success in life by means other than through democratic principals or the laws of God. Athletic participation teaches that lasting success very rarely comes any other Way. If athletes do not maintain high standards of moral conduct and proper training, chances are that they will not long be athletes. Interscholastic athletics is very successful at Center South. This is because of the character of people who attend Center South and participate in athletics. One thing that students learn while partic- ipating in athletics is that to be successful they must give themselves to dedication, sacrifice, discipline and pain. Sometimes they may not be winners athletically but they are Winners in life because they try. No coach can ask for more from his players than to know they try. During the years I have been coach at Center South I have never coached anyone that was not a wirmer. If they didn't have a winning season, which is rare, the foundation for winning was laid and later as Freshmen or in high school they did attain that goal because they never quit trying. And so I say to this year's athletes as you remembe I' . ' ' W - 4 8 '5 Dear Students, I believe an im- portant value of ath- letics is the oppor- tunity it provides for T the athletes and spec tators to learn the important realities and rules of life. These lessons must be learned if we are to become useful and mature citizens. A self-disciplined athlete practices when the coach is not looking, a self-disciplined student studies when the teacher is not looking. Mature people know that rules are necessary for the proper conduct of a game just as laws are necessary for our school and civic lives. Perhaps the best lesson We can learn from athletics is in the attitude a coach has for the worth of a human being in relation to the teams goals. In interscholastic athletics, as we have at Center South, a coach will always, as best he can judge, choose those boys for the team who will best represent our school with a winning record. For his team to do this he cannot choose them on the basis of color, race or religion. He can make his choice only on such factors as coachability, intelligence, dedication to team suc- cess, natural physical ability and a willingness to follow the team's rules. These might well be the qualities for which a young man is someday chosen by an employer for his life 's Work. As future adult citizens, it will often be your responsibility to choose our public officials with a vote. I hope you will choose them for some of the same reasons a coach must choose his players to have a winning team. your Junior High years, don't forget two things: you l tried and you were Winners. Larry Frazier Bill Speise Dear Students, Center South has great pride in its sports program. Not because we have always Won, but because we have always had fine growing young men on our teams. Good school citizens make good players. The les- sons taught on the playing field are the lessons of life: faith in a cause, fair play, overcoming adversity, failing and trying again. Center South has given to its young men an op- portunity to gain honor for themselves and their school. I am proud that I have been able to play a small part in these successful ventures. This was the first undefeated season in the history of our school. Also the team set a scoring record in the second O'Hara game with 91 points. This success can be attributed to many things, including: excellent coaching, a driving impulse to go undefeated, natural ability of the players, especially that of our five starters who were Steve Hayes, Robert Fuchs, Rob Hall, Doug Brummett and Bob Bartholomew. The team started off the season by winning our own tournament in a game with William Chrisman. The team went on handing out several crushing de- feats. Then in the William Chrisman game of the Raytown Tournament the team ran into its roughest game of the season, eeking by Chrisman in one overtime period. Then by defeating Pittman the team clinched their undefeated season. By going undefeated the team left a record that can never be broken, just equaled. We the Freshman Class wish the future classes the best of luck. It takes a lot of hard work, patience, time, and ability. Along with this, there is the ex- citement of winning and the disappointment of losing. At this time the Kachina staff would like to give our thanks to our spirited cheer leaders. The cheerleaders, officers, and spon- sors are constantly striving to function as a whole with the end result being a happy, well behaved and enthusiastic Pep Club.
