Not only fashions were unique to this year, but also events from the entertain- ment world had great influence. Star Wars was a big hit and it started a new era of science fiction movies. T-shirts, buttons, posters, cos- tumes, action figure dolls, comic books, and other items were made available after the movie became a hit. The song You Light Up lVly Life , sung by Debby Boone, broke all records by being the number one song on the charts for nine weeks. ln the area of sports, skateboarding became the number one sport for teenagers. The latest fashions were boots worn with skirts or with pants tucked in. Going along with the sci- ence fiction craze many kids started wearing sil.ver space jackets. Stickpins worn on collars were big and combs worn in the hair were seen. Elvis, the King of Rock, died after a long career of entertaining. When he died people rushed to buy momentos of him such as T-shirts, statuettes, or his personal belong- ings. The television industry started a new trend in family shovvs. These included Eight is Enough, The Fitzpatricks, lVlulligan Stevv, and Family. ln twis year, like every other year, the fads and trivia have given it a flavor unto itself.
