This may be due to the many girls that enrolled into a predominatly male field. The girls entered such classes as metals, power machinics. But drafting seemed to be the favorite for most of the girls that enrolled. New equipment was also added to the department such as a dust collecting system for the wood shop. An exhaust system was also installed over the welding area. Last year the graphics classes received a new typesetter, and this year it was put to good use by the Searchlight staff. The staff set all of their own copy. 1 3 ' .4 -A1 4 Using safety equipment PAUL HANELY prepares to use the saw. My Cross Country sea- son was an exciting, uplifting, and tiring at times, disheart- ening experience. Looking back on the season, though, I think it was one of the most satis- fying times of my life. l'll never forget the spirit and close friendships I formed on the team. The com- petitive spirit of Hugh McTernan kept us all excited. At the onset of the season our team lacked spirit and com petitiveness, and our running reflected it. Some how, though we pulled together. Overnight, we went from a mediocre to a Championship team. Winning the Conference Championship for the second year in a row was extremely gratifying and most exciting. -TIM POTTER 'ul I T5 fm? , Q.- J 3.1 li ' -to 4 LII M . 1, t I ,N LA. From these different situations I feel that I can give someone who will follow me some good advice. To anyone who comes after me, if you decide that you want to play football, make sure that its something that you've given alot of thought to and are willing to devote lots of time, energy and self sacri- fice. I happen to love football and that is OFIG of the malfl FEBS- ons for going out. I guess an- other reason for playing is because I wanted to prove to myself that I could play foot- ball. I had always had real good football seasons and my first year at Center was a little scary, but I learned alot and got a chance to play 96lVarsity Football quite a bit of football. My junior year was one like l've never had before. I was hurt most of the seas- on and I felt like I let my teammates and coaches down. I practiced hard but still rode the bench. After that year I was determined to everyone I could play ball. My senior year I started training early and was in good shape when the season started. I had alot of drive instilled in me to prove to my coaches that I could play ball. By the end of the season I felt I had proven myself and still kept my love for the game. I feel I still didn't get my just recognition but it's over now and I have a couple of requirements for those who follow me: love the game and enjoy playing it for when that's gone you will never play to your capabilities. -GARY WALKER tado, T. The winning and losing may have been forgotten but the times and all the players will never be forgotten. This season really started during the summer before this school year started. Almost every evening you could find at least a couple of the guys at some out- door court or up at school. Playing to- gether helped us to get to know each other's weaknesses besides learning to work together. There are things about basketball I will remember for a long time after grad- uating from Center. The miles of run- ning before the season started, five other guys and myself getting locked in the school at Hickman Mills, the freez- ing locker room at Excelsior Springs, GREG DECKEFt's last second shot to beat Rockhurst, my last second shot against Hickman Mills talthough it wasn't the winning onel, and the time CEDRIC HUFITT started against Hogan because getting the jump ball was important. Certain things come to my mind when I think of the guys on the teamg KYLE UNRUH stunning somebody with a pinpoint pass right through all the defenders, and GENE BRIXEY flying up and dunking the ball. lt's BOB BICE's drives that make me wish I was quicker, and BILL DUTTON sticking his tongue out when he shoots. All in all, varsity basketball was an experience that I will never forget. lt's something that helps you learn to work with other guys through the good and the bad. There was one thing I could always say after a basketball sea- son, that I would really like to have said this year, but I can't. I can't wait 'til next year. -BILL ADAMS 102!Varsity Basketball I 2-'- Iii ... Varsity managers JEFF NEAVEILL and JIM FLACK stand by for assistance as the team takes a time-out, GRE! Each of us benefitted from the encour- agement we received from the other players and the coach. We worked to improve our individual skills and then applied them to team competi- tion. Led by coach Jan Russell, the volleyball squad began practices in August involving running, warm up drills and scrimmages to performance. The climax of the season occured as we captured the second place plaque in the district tour- nament at Raytown South. Many new, but experi- enced players contributed to the welfare of the team. The year entailed the planning and decorating of the sophomore dance, the fund raiser, the campaigning for the election, and some preparation for the Snoball. The duty of the officers is mainly to represent the entire sophomore class body as a whole. The officers are: Cain DeVore, President: Claudia Kaufman, Vice President: Pam Serrioz, Secre- taryg and Rosemary Koncak, Treasurer. As Cain DeVore stated in his campaign speech, We want to make the feelings of our students known and hopefully make sophomores an impor tant part of the decisions made here at Cen- ter. A book of memories, a yearbook. And friends, good times, and a little friction was made at the same time. Memories of every day events will last forever. simple things like NANCY BUNDY always playing a clown, or the girls screaming whenever one of their many favorite songs came on the radio. Total in- sanity was generally exhibited by everyone during class, but through all our daily chaos RUTH LOCKYEAR quietly and steadily worked on. Then there were the less frequent but equally memorable events such as ruining 96 neg- atives, two days before a dead- line, and JILL DRITLEY never having the pictures for her spread. On one particularly hectic deadline we were forced to work until midnight at Mrs. Cobb's house, amid utter chaos of everyone talking at the same time, papers flying, and phones ringing. Confusion like this occured during the week of every deadline. And with the confusion and the tension, tempers flared, and rash state- ments were made but apologies always followed especially by KRIS WILLIAMS and JILL DRITLEY. Everyone seemed to have funny little quirks that every- one else seemed to notice all K of the time. Like TERRY TAYLOR referring to the liquid paper as liquid gold. And the four members of drill team prac- ticing thieir drills with the songs on the radio. The famous radio with the picture of STEVE falke's little brother on it, which was supposed to be used by YELLOWJACKET only. The spirit club members had an affinity for parties, birthday parties, christmas parties, a party to name Mrs. Cobb Year- book queen, and parties just to have parties. That same group liked to paint signs too, two of their more famous works were Cobb is Cool , and Get it on with Gad , tMr. Bob Gad was our representative from the yearbook companyi. I would also like to inform you of a page in the yearbook which was censored, by some strange means we were able to collect enough X-rated pictures to fill a page, well at least R-rated. Through the year we worked as a family with each member contributing to the whole, we laughed together fwith NANCY's helpl, worried together fwith my helpli and fought together iwith every- one's helpj. But in the end we were friends, and the mem- ories we made will be remem- bered whenever we look at the product of our work, this book. YELLOWJACKET STAFF Mark4Gray ...........................
