They assisted the cheerleaders at pep assemblies and spon- sored the Homecoming festivities, which in- cluded the dance decorations, entertainment, and refreshments. During the basketball season Pep Club spon- sor Miss Myra Harms, assisted by seven others, chaperoned 150 Pep Club members on an over- night trip to jefferson City and Columbia to at- tend the Friday and Saturday night games. The trip was not only fun but also educational, fea- turing tours of the State Capital, Highway Patrol Headquarters and M,U. This trip was the high point in the Pep Clubs activities, but throughout the year the Pep Club continued to strive for outstanding spirit and enthusiasm. fn 'Q U1 f i LEFT: Patty Pearce, President. Based on one of the darkest moments of our history, The Crucible impressed the audience as a valuable social comment on the dangers of law and justice based on suspicion, ignorance and mass hysteria, Following the selection of the cast in early October, rehearsals were held daily until the presentation of the play November 17 and 18. After blocking the play and memorizing lines, the players were able to concentrate on specific details necessary for the final performance, Step by step, bits of props, costumes and dramatic in- struction gave color to the actors' interpretation of the play. Technical innovations such as the use of the scrim added physical effects to the play. Dress rehearsals were held three nights previous to the play's actual performance. The performance of the play brought to an end many hours of hard work by the actors, the technical crews and the drama coach, Mr. Landes. Following the final production of The Crucible, a cast y sl-'Rn-nh party was held for all actors and members ofthe production staff. v I I s Qi 1 OPPOSITE TOP: Tituba, portrayed by Shelley Orren, confesses that she summoned the evil spirits, OPPOSITE EAR LEFT: -lohn Proctor, played by Ron Skinner, learns that Mary Warren gave his wife a voodoo doll. Members of Art Club worked on projects which they could not work on during class such as oil paintings, metal work and ceramics. They also constructed and painted the settings for Center's plays. The Science Club members ex- panded their class activities by entering and helping with the Science Fair and by building a gas chromatograph. Although not related to classroom work, the Chess Club also increased the interest of stu- dents in a certain area. Members of the Chess Club improved their skill in the game by com- peting against each other and by entering tour- naments with neighboring schools. .Zh , ' ' .W ,?'!,,Q X Xa Y ,, ' ' ' J - , sw'- ' if. Pied Piper Delights Young Audience On February 12, 15, and 14, Centers Players SX presented their winter production, The Plea' Piper 0fiH!Il7l6!li1I. This childrens classic was presented especially for students in the district grade schools, In addition to three evening performances, one day- time performance was given for fourth and sixth grade students, These audiences enjoyed an on-stage creation of the small village, I-Iamelin. After being terrorized by rats, the frantic townspeople learned a valuable lesson from a very unscrupulous looking character, the Pied Piper. Centers production of this moral fantasy, The Pied Piper, was highlighted by the work of the tech- nical crews. The combined efforts of the Art and Industrial Art departments resulted in the creation of the most elaborate and professional looking set of any Players 58 production. Unique props also added to the audiences' appreciation of the play. ,fy . x .wxggt , i, JYEYK. ,. 27 ' 2' 3- Ulf RKQHT' Nuke llsuuut lt tlcluvurs an extentporauwotus specth at the Roglvthurst Tournament BELOW' NATIONAI. Because of devotion and teamwork, the debate squad successfully repre- sented CHS in twenty-five tournaments held during the year. Debating the subject UCrime and Criminals, Seniors Mike Usnick and Lula Bryant compiled impressive individual records. Centers less experienced debaters competed in the Novice division. Their performance indi- cated a promising future for the Center chapter of the National Forensic League. Another extracurricular activity, Cooperative Occupational Education, was included in the list of courses offered at CHS which entailed out- side activity. COE, restricted to Seniors, enabled students to attend school and work at the same time. Students went to regular classes in the morning hours and were excused in the after- noon to go to their jobs. 'i -qw !I I an ie YW t Staff Publishes Yellowiacleet Twentieth Edition I ers' mf? Members of the 1968 yearbook staff produced the twentieth annual edition of the Yefloujurbef with the traditional goal of providing an ac- curate and memorable record of the school year at Center High, Preparation for this edition ofthe Yelloujarkel was begun early in the summer of 1967. After attending the Missouri lnterscholas- tic Press Associations week-long summer clinic at the University of Missouri, the editorial staff selected the cover design, theme and basic layout format for the yearbook. Under the direction of staff sponsor, Miss Mary Lu Haworth, the edi- torial staff selected a unique form of layout design known as Mondrian layout. This form of design, derived from the revolutionary paintings of a Dutch artist, Paul Mondrian, is commonly used in popular magazines including LMI and Time. On the basis of this modern journalistic mode, staff members incorporated the essential elements of copy, pictures and captions into the actual production of the yearbook. Production of the yearbook was completed with the last dead- line in early March. Staff members used the rest of the year to plan the yearbook dance, compile the supplement and organize distribution of the Yelfoufjurkel, , i x X X Q X AHUVE' YEARBOOK STAFF-Fm! This problem occurred because the necessary addition to the high school was not made. Because of the over' flow of students, more teachers were hired by the board. Soon after the school year began, it was necessary to hire a new English teacher. Also, a new history teacher was added to the staff at the middle of the year to help eliminate the over-crowded history classes. Besides the addition of new teachers, two new members were added to the administration. One of these members was Robert O'Neill who took the position of Supervisor of Art Education. The other was john McGovern, a new board member. During the year, the school board traveled to Lawrence, Kansas, to observe a new computer system which they were considering for use in the Center District. This system is one used by the Lawrence School District for grading, testing and for paying their faculty. Later in the year, in February, members of the board attended the annual School Board Convention, held this year in Detroit, Michigan. ln the middle of February several board members also traveled to Atlantic City, New jersey for a nation-wide convention. Besides these activities, the board also held their monthly meetings to discuss the problems in the district and in its administration. Q. ,, Y VX! The new adminis- tration was headed by Mr. Larry Ackley, Cen- ter's new principal previously an administrator at Columbia Hickman High School in Columbia, Missouri. Assisting Mr. Ackley was Mr. Tom Odneal, former Center counselor. Working to- gether, the two principals initiated many original and successful programs. On the first day of school the student body was introduced to the new staff of principals and other administrative personnel by Student Coun- cil president, Mike Usnick. Setting a pattern for the duration of the school year, this assembly was attended by the student body in two shifts to compensate for a lack of sufficient auditorium seating because of an increase in enrollment. Another new program introduced by Mr. Ack- ley's administration was the issue of daily an- nouncement memorandums. This program re- placed the impersonal and irregular use of the public address system to announce meetings of clubs and other important activities. The smooth operation of Mr. Ackley's pro- grams was aided by the cooperative assistance of the secretarial staff. The secretaries, Mrs. Doris Gustafson and Mrs. Cheryl Asbury, were respon- sible for the compiling of daily absentee reports, bus attendance records, and the coordination of messages between students, teachers, parents and the administration staff. To alleviate some of the pressure imposed on Mrs. Gustafson and Mrs. Asbury by the increase in enrollment, a receptionist, Mrs. Pat McDoniel, a Center graduate, was added to the office staff. The combined hard work and cooperation achieved by Mr. Ackley and his staff resulted in a successful school year.
