This is especially pertinent in Latin, for it is the foundation for the many languages of both free peoples and the victims of dictatorship. One finds such vigor in the zeal- ous students of all the Latin classes! Beyond the minimum requirements of each daily class they prepare educational reports and projects, aid an unfortunate family at Christmas, sell food in an authentic Roman Market during Latin Week, and maintain an active and interesting club -- all under the direction of Miss Lorene Roller. Sincerely, The Castalians These students will use Latin in their careers: Gary Orren, doctor, Francine King, interpreterg Joyce Reckart, language teacherg Phelps Murdock, Anglican priest, Linda Davin, scholarg Nara Blum, pharmacist, Bob Bruno, chemistg and Bernie Barsky, lawyer. 22 LA TIN III SPQR N 'w Quousque tandem abutere, Catilina, patientia nostra? CENTER 19 LIBERTY 13 History almost repeated itself as Center, trailing at the end of the first half 13-12, bounced back to de- feat the Bluejays by a score of 19-13. The Yellow- Jackets' triumph was all the more noteworthy as five of the starting lineup were out of the game with inJ'1' ries. After the rornpings of Charlie Lee, who accounted for both of Liberty's scores, Center tightened up its de- fense to hold the Bluejays scoreless the second half. Ac counting for two of Center's tallies were passes from Roy Iiarchmin to Richard Houtz and Jack Isley. The last score came in the fourth quarter as Jerry Parrott took a handoff from Roy and went 66 yards for the goal. CENTER 20 BELTON 0 Center's yellowjackets started the season right by sinking the Belton Pirates. Although the game was played on slippery ground, the gridmen made a fine showing as they scored all their touchdowns on runs. Dan Rankin made the first tally of the year as he swept left end to cross the line. Supported by an effective de fense led by Earl Denyer and Richard 1-loutz, Center a- gain scored in the third quarter on a 15 -yard run by quarterback Roy Farchmin. Then in the fourth period Jerry Parrott, halfback, made a 50-yard punt return for the final points of the night. I R4 1 CENTER 25 PARK HILL 6 With a touchdown in every period, Center's gridiron gladiators set the Trojans back on their heels as they rolled to a 25-6 victory. Led by Jerry Parrott, who scored two of the four rewarded attempts, the Yellowjackets swept by an undermanned opponent. In the process, Center advanced 318 yards as against 200 for Park Hill. The single Trojan tally came on a 51-yard run in the final period by Bob Mead. Conley Funk, with a three -yard plunge, and Doug Ammon, on a ten-yard Illll, provided the other effective drives in the scoring department. This gave the Center Yellowjackets their fourth win of the season and their thirteenth victory in a row. CENTER 14 FORT OSAGE O Despite a stubborn pass and ground offense used by the Fort Osage Indians, Center's grid athletes held their ground and went on to win their third in a row for l96l. It was in the second quarter that the Yellow jackets scored both of their touchdowns. The first of these came in the beginning of the period when Roy Farchmin rolled around right end and went 28 yards for the tally. Toward the end of the quarter, Roy tossed a 42 -yard pass to right end Terry Barger to set up the touchdown play. Then the signals were called the ball was hiked, and Frank Crow went over on a one -yard plunge for the score. Came of HARVEST MOON HOMECOMING Miss Judy Miller, a senior, was chosen Home coming queen of 1961 by the football squad. The queen's identity was kept a secret until the halftime of the f5otba11 game between Grandview and Center, at which time the queen was announced and crowned along with her attendants. Despite a hard-fought game, Grandview defeated Center 13 -0, This handed the Yellowjackets their first loss in fourteen games. . lg, fwfr, MISS JUDY MILLER MECOMING QUEE Z ff Vx if 1 f 1711 X 1 I Aff W7 fx' ' f of '14 51, 7' I .,,..- T 5 N CENTER 19 LEE'S SUMMIT 0 Overcoming numerous penalties, Center's Yellow- jackets flew past the Lee's Summit Tigers to defeat them on the losers' field by a score of 19-O. Leading the Jackets to victory was Jerry Parrott, who managed to score all three Center touchdowns on liandoffs from Roy Farchmin. The first two touchdowns came in the first and second periods. Then, in the third quarter, after suffering another penalty, Center again broke up the Tigers' defense, and Jerry went through for the final tally of the game. CENTER ' 21 Cl-IRISMAN '7 Center completed a fine season by downing the William Chrisman Bears 21 -7. Although the game began badly as the Bears grabbed the first score, Center broke into the scoring column in the second period as Jerry Parrott ran '70 yards on a punt return to score. Then, with seconds left in the half, Farchmin completed a pass to Terry Barger whose fumble in the end zone was recovered by Richard Houtz, to make the score 14-7 after the conversion.
