The Student Council of Center Senior High School is an elected organization representative of the student body, The primary function of the Student Council is to interpret the recommendations and needs of the student body to the administration and to inform the student body of the policies and regulations of the administration. The Student Council was instrumental in initiating the Foreign Student program which has resulted in Center's first foreign student, Bernd Wildemann, attending Center this year, The Student Council presents the Christmas Prom, professional assemblies, represents the school at various meetings and educational functions and performs many other notable services for the school, student body, and administration. English IV ur Foreign Exchange Student. After persistent campaigning, Center finally received its first foreign exchange student, Bernd Wildemann who came to the United States from Berlin, Germany. Bernd determined to try to come to America after hearing favorable reports about it from his sister, also a foreign exchange student. He felt that a year in the United States would be of value to him in his future studies at the University of Berlin. After applying to the United Field Service, he and 24 others were chosenafrom 450 candidates for foreign exchange students. He was selected by a committee of six former exchange students on the basis of his grades and personality. Bernd enrolled in various courses that interested him at Center. He was also a member of the football team and received an honorable letter from Center. When asked of his opinion of the United States, Bernd replied that Americans always try to get along with one another, and that they are proud of their freedom and consider it a privilege. He thinks his stay in America to be an enjoyable and adventurous experience. 4 Siski- if N ..,--fx, , Speech Pei' 501131 TYPU18 American History Driver's Education SCIENCE CLUB -is-if Y, - -.r -as 44 .i X - ! ?9nif h Mr. Steiner Bruce Weeks Ann Buttermore Gordon Loeffler Mike McDaniel Advisor Vice-President Historian President Secretary-Treasurer The purpose of the Science Club is to provide an opportunity for the members to work on projects which illustrate various scientific principles. Each member studies the specific field of science in which he or she is particularly interested. The big events of the year are the Center District Science Fair and the Greater Kansas City Science Fair. The purpose of the Center Fair is to promote interest in science, to apply the scientific method for practical use, to develop initiative and originiality in the students, and to select from this fair those projects which will represent Center in the Kansas City Science Fair. In these fairs, the projects are judged on the basis of creative ability, scientific thought, thoroughness, skill, clarity, and dramatic presentation. Only those projects which receive top ratings at the Center Fair may be entered in the Kansas City Fair. The club makes visits to various establishments, including the Midwest Research Institute, in order to witness the scientific method and the principles which they have been studying in actual progress. Through these visits, the members obtain helpful and interesting knowledge and ideas for their projects. The members look forward to an outing at the end of the year whereby they may relax before starting the next year's research for their projects. Northcutt Future Teachers of America ' I -Uktli Janet Horn Pat Dunsworth Beverly Veach Kathy McCann Vicki Clark Historian Treasurer Vice-President Secretary Program Chairman Darvin Weston President The Future Teachers have had an unusually profitableyear under the competent leadership of Darvin Weston, the President 1959-60. There have been 58 active and working members who have been busy filing, grading, and otherwise helping the Center Senior High School Faculty. In addition to these duties the members found time to par- ticipate in the Fall Carnival, listen to informative speakers such as Pat Clark, former Center Future Teacher, Miss Capper, a first year teacher in our Red Bridge Elementary School, and other prominent speakers in this area. Seven members attended the State Teachers Convention in St. Louis where our own Vicki Clark was elected Vice-President of Missouri State Future Teachers. This is an honor not heretofore enjoyed by our club. They sponsorai American Educationweek with seventy-five friends and patrons visiting classes, attending assemblies, and eating lunch with the students in the cafeteria. The group enlisted the aid of the Y-Teens in sponsoring a drive for funds and clothing for Children's Mercy HospitaL All members visited the Truman Library wherelvlr. Truman himself conducted a tour. During Career week each future teacher taught his or her favorite subject ranging from kindergarten to high school. Fine leadership from Miss Lorme Roller, the faculty sponsor, and the executive committee sparked by active participation of all members has indeed made this club one of the school's most active organi- zations. There was much variety in their programs, one of the most impressive being a travelog-slidefilm, ARUSSIAN IOURNEY,which was considered a significant enough commentary on freedom to use for the Thanksgiving assembly. In addition to that assembly, the Y-Teens were responsible for the Christmas program where a living Christmas tree, containing a treat of an apple and an orange, was issued to each person present, compliments of the Student Council, Y-Teens, and Mr. Bill Virden, a patron of the district who operated the fruit machine in the cafeteria. Bill J ones and Gary Myers, alumni who are studying for the ministry, returned to give the Christmas message. At Christmas this organization joined efforts with the F .T.A. to provide money and gifts for the Children's Mercy Hospital. They were an earnest group, both from the point of view of service and of caring for the materials in a responsible and business-like manner. The librarians this year were Glenda Crowley, Pat Ross, Patty Nolan, Martha Robinette, Lois Avery, Phyllis Bluhm, Judy Shaw, Shirley Kocherov, Judith Wilson, Betty Harris, and Donna Manning. Interest in the library was enhanced by many clever posters made by members of the art classes, a project they undertake annually that helps for closer relationship between the two departments and aids greatly in library advertising, Following tradition of the High School, art students painted aChristmas scene on the plate-glass windows, this year slightly on the modern side, but enjoyed by painters and viewers alike. Almost five-hundred new books were purchased in every area of interest to provide a constant challenge for reading, and a new charging desk was added to the attractiveness of the reading room to in- crease efficiency of service. A reference area is to be built around if. 3 I. X I 1 I FIRST ROW: W, Westring, M, Hollo, P. Murdock, B, Eaton, M. Berkey. SECOND ROW: B. Harris, I. Beach, A. Buttermore, J, Jackson, S. The Co-operative Occupational Education courseis devised for one purpose: namely, for those individual students who do not plan to enter college upon graduation from high school. The course is so designed to fit the needs of the students who wish to acquire some work experience before graduation to use for a reference when they are placed on the job market. - At the present time we have some 45 students. who are engaged in part-time work with the industries and businesses in the South part of Kansas City. Their wages range from 35.75 an hour to 31.45. A great many of the concerns who employ these individuals during the school year will offer them a steady position at the conclusion of their high school education. We feel it is a help as far as work experience, ability to meet the public, develop- ment of poise, and fitting one's self into the society that he will be placed into upon graduation. 61 DEBATE CLUB L. At St. Joseph, Keith LaQuey scored all of Center's nine points, by winning the shot-put and placing second in the discus. In doing so he erased the school records for both events. He hurled the shot 53 9 and the discus 144' 5 . The discus record broke the previous one by more than twelve feet.
