Of course, our first year we looked up to and admired the upper classmen. We began to make ourselves known in music and sports, and under the guidance of Miss Knight completed a successful year. The next September we began a little more sure-footed and branched out into the fields of debate and cheerleading, Mrs, Sutor was our sponsor through this second year of success. Then came the days of Yum Yumsl Candy Bars I Ice Cold Pop! and Hot Coffee! Yes, our junior year, and Mrs. Swetnam led another group of juniors through a full year, from our play, I Remember Mama, in November to the Prom in the spring. We worked industriously and entered our senior year as a group of good salesmen with strong vocal cords. This past year, like all good senior classes, we aquired leader- ship in almost every activity open—music, athletics, debate, scholar- ship, cheerleading, Hi-Y and Y-Teens, and dramatics. We led eventful lives; the senior play, Our Miss Brooks, attending the Prom, this time as guests, and the grand finale, our graduation. The Council is composed of two represent- atives elected from each class plus the presi- dent elected at large. Activities of the group include the general directorship of all school activities, and the specific sponsorship of two professional shows during the school term. The members decorate the halls at Christmas time and sponsor a page in the yearbook. Their funds are derived from the profit on pencils sold at school. This page sponsored by STUDENT COUNCIL OF CENTER HIGH SCHOOL 47 Searchlight and Production Staff Members of the journalism class,in co-operation with a production staff from the Commerce Department, produce the Center Searchlight. About 16 issues, or approximately two each month, are published during the school year. The staff of the paper attempts to publish news concerning each worth-while curricular and extra-curricular activity, especially those in the junior-senior high school. This year a page is generally devoted to news from the elementary schools each time that the paper is issued. The paper is a member of The Missouri Interscholastic Press Association and of Quill and Scroll, a national organization for high school papers and writers. Each year, members of the journalism class submit entries in contests sponsored by these organizations. — •nruuui Karat sra, K Vpwl This page sponsored by THE SEARCHLIGHT OF CENTER HIGH SCHOOL 48 Yellowjacket Staff Sa3-eS N. In these organizations, high school people learn the bases for good fellowship and realize hign ideals of personal and social living in the world today. Here they acquire a sympathetic understanding for not only their school associates, but for people of all races and religions. The two clubs though completely apart in their organization and pro- grams, collaborate frequently to carry on their work. Joint meetings on topics of importance to both groups are held occasionally. This year they cooperated in presenting the Yellowjacket Jamboree,a money—raising project. Both clubs contribute to the work of the YWCA and YMCA organizations throughout the world. Massachusetts Institute of Technology Boston, Massachusetts Dear Julie, I have just finished reading your new novel, THE PSYCHOLOGICAL AMD DETER- MINING EFFECTS OF RADAR ON THE HUMAN MALE DURING LEAP YEAR. Thanks for the free dozen copies. Although you are the first lady professor at M.I.T., I thought that you might still be interested in some news from home. The other night, while listening to my favorite radio station, (channel S3S, perfected by Simmon, Stowe, and Searcy), Betty Gunderson, Portia Faces Life, Van Gordon, Counterspy, and Helen Evans, The Kate Smith Hour, all ganged up on iry nerves. This, together with the awful medicine I had taken before dinner, Murray Willey's Little River Pills (designed for rivers whose tributaries have run dry), made it necessary for me to call for my doctor, Winnifred Morse, but no help came from her as she turned out to be a quack. . I turned ny radio back on,only to hear some guy arguing if placing Eskimos in the diamond mines was practical and if you thought so, then vote for Bill Lehman for president. Seeing that nothing was on the radio, I turned to the amusement section of the STAR (now edited by Crusading Floiy ) and read about 'Meta Knecht and All airl German Brass Band with tromDonist Hanson, trumpeters Cross and Gish, and tubist Borton. Their act was followed by Giggling Sue and Her laughing Kangaroos. Over at the Roxy, the great team of Brown and Ruechel was starring m a new musical, DON'T LOOK NOW to be produced for the blind. The vlgaVe mP de!pair “d went 10 a fashion show at K.C.'s newest, ine House of Kressge, where I saw Jeschke Johnston modeling the latest fash- ions with the famous Marrie Roun A Tree label on them. , „° y way hcme I passed by the governor's mansion, where janitors Morrell ...d Hernman were cutting the lawn and sweeping the sidewalks. Inside, Governor Wimp(whose every move was being covered by his secretary Cora Anne Smith and er tearSSr neTerlv was welcomang those two famous missionaries and their t t COl ,J?hlT and Gunnijlghaln Just back from darkest Africa and their latest expedition led by Mack the Silent and Heater the Hot. Down on the comer, foreman Jack Littrell was having trouble with his street cleaning crew. It seems that every time Repass started pitching a load of trash into the truck, driver Makris would pick that time to move. Walking by an open man hole, I saw crewmen Miley, McQueen and Allen cleaning the street sewers with Bon Ami. A little old wrinkled tramp stopped me in the next block and tried to sell me some pencils and an old Pogo book. It seems that Garth went down fast as he just couldn't stand the waiting--waiting----waiting of it all. Nearing home, I ran into the rising young society torch singer, Carol De- Brock, who, with beret pulled low, was wandering incognito. As she neared her £Lat, she bought a newspaper from the orange crate stand operated by Dave Kennedy. As soon as this letter is mailed, I am leaving for Tombstone Arizona, where I will assume my duties as pianist and part-time bartender at the Last Drop Saloon.
