Under the direction of Mrs. Meeks, Mr. Van Veld and Mr. Huyser, students enrolled in music and art learned much about these areas of fine arts. Mr. Huyser, art instructor, helped his pupils increase their knowledge in several areas of art. Block printing, pastel painting, sculpturing, charcoal drawing, and work with stencils were main proiects of art students. White River Township fire department sponsored a fire prevention poster contest in which high school students participated. Karen Hole received first place, followed by Karen Minnemeyer and Karen Scrivner respectively. Art classes visited John Herron Art Museum in Indian- apolis as a part of the program of learning different types of art. Prospective band members received instrumental les- sons from Mr. Van Veld. Since he is also band director, he devoted much of his time to the senior high band and its members. To graduate it is necessary to take government, economics, and United States history. For further edu- cation in social studies, world history and sociology are offered. A voting machine was acquired by the depart- ment to enlighten government students on proper vot- ing procedure. For more informed and interesting classes, debates and panel discussions on current affairs are held. Films supplement many topics of discussion. Social studies are taught to high school students by Mr. Cline, Mr. Huff, and Mr. Porter. Junior high pupils study history and geography under the direction of Mr. Long, Miss Hahn, and Mr. Bunton. The key to accuracy and speed in commercial courses, according to Mrs. Fulmer, Mrs. Howard, Mr. Lydick, and Mr. Sloop, is continuous practice. Prospective secretaries strive for 65 words per minute in typing and 120 words per minute in shorthand. Other business courses include general busi- ness, business arithmetic, bookkeeping, and secre- tarial office practice. Pupils enrolled in secretarial office praclice, which includes advanced typing, act as secretaries to faculty members. Learning to oper- ate office machines is also a part of this advanced course.
