Spirit, enthusiasm, new challenges, and excitement abound throughout Center Grove as the faculty and pupils work together toward higher standards. Each accomplishment-academic, athletic, or extra-curricular- increases our chances of attaining worthy goals. All of us are able to acknowledge and take pride in the continuing progress of Center Grove School and the achievements of its pupils both as a group and as individuals. ff ,r 7 I -2, 1 f f 1 1 , ' 1 X f wk If v A Ffwm Fm T70 lout fell 750614, Yeaciem Yiuai 70 cdflfllf Oat s U 1 in , 1' READY FOR ANOTHER DAY . . . Pupils hurry from busses to first period classes. Study, extra-curricular activities, and class pro- jects keep the student body and faculty busy from 7:50 to 3:15 each clay. Confusion and congestion result during the five- minute breaks between classes and the ten-minute break in the afternoon. Everyone scurries to and from lockers, the office, the telephone, the bookstore, and the water fountains. Not only must pupils use this time to get their books and other materials for the next class, but they must also transact business concerning class projects, activities, and most im- MAY I HELP YOU? . . . A wide variety of mathe- matical subiects provides Center Grove students with a diversified curriculum. These subiects include algebra, advanced algebra, plane geometry, general mathe- matics, business arithmetic, and college mathematics. In college math, taught by Mrs. Clements, students learn more about advanced math such as solid geometry, trigonometry, and college math which includes calculus and analysis. These students are planning careers centered around mathematics. Pupils in geometry, algebra, and college math obtain extra credit through the construction of mathe- matical projects. Miss McMahon, who formerly taught in the Labora- tory School at Iowa State College, introduced a new method of teaching math by eliminating the use of textbooks. Students in her classes work on special problems on mimeographed sheets which are distributed each day. Other math teachers include Mr. Legan, Mr. Sloop, Mr. Steward, and Mr. Robey. Eight semesters of English credits are required for graduation. ln these classes students learn the formal points of speech and composition. Literature classes acquaint students with the problems, ideas, and customs of people of all ages and nationalities. Along with this and the increase in vocabulary, students learn to think creatively. Next year for the first time seniors will be given an eagerly. --s' opportunity to take English literature and learn more about the classics, . Students may use their knowledge of the English language in the elective classes of iournalism and speech. High school English classes are taught by Mrs. Robert- son, Miss Hahn, Mrs. Callahan, and Miss Kivett and iournalism and speech by Mrs. Miles. Other business courses include general busi- ness, business arithmetic, bookkeeping, and secre- tarial office practice. Proceeds from a sock hop during football season were used to buy material for new copes. The Booster Club was led by varsity and reserve cheerleaders who attended the Smith-Walbridge Cheer- leader Camp during the summer. There they learned direct motion cheers, pom-pon routines, tumbling, and skits. A person of high morals and strong character, Wayne took an active part in school activities and had an avid interest in sports. He was a member of Hi-Y Club and was elected secretary this year. He also was on Student Council for two years, being elected vice-president as a senior. For four years Wayne participated in football, and he had been named sports editor of the 1962-63 yearbook. Possibly his greatest high school achievement came two weeks prior to his death when he was notified that he had placed in the top two per cent of all the students in the nation who had taken the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. 78 l www Opera gem By Sf0ll40'llrKf fl , Waving Fm SUPER SALESMEN . . . Freshmen along with their sponsors, Mrs. Hunley and Mr. Huyser, took advantage of a free half day because of final exams and held a class party in January. The party consisted of a luncheon, attending Cinerama at Indianapolis, and a return trip to school for a dinner and a dance. Another freshman activity was sponsoring a sock hop in February, the proceeds of which were placed in the class treasury. Supporting their basketball and football teams kept the freshmen busy during the fall and winter months. 1 :i,. at ' l , 3 'L .51 V .,. ,, -.Q .Q- , .. 4 X . . Now that the activities of the 1963 Trojan staff have come to a close, many people deserve our thanks for making this yearbook possible. The ad- ministration and faculty withstood many interruptions in order that we could take pictures and make in- quiries. We volue the co-operation given us by the Photo-Reflex Studio of L. S. Ayres Company, espec- ially Mr. Carter, who was in charge of taking senior and faculty portraits, and Mr. Downey, who took group and informal pictures. Our special apprecia- tion goes to the advertisers who let us show their products and services.
