Y 1- 1, Saphamore Hlass 'The sophomore year is probably the most difficult, in respect to adjustment, and in many ways somewhat discouraging to the new student. 'As the freshest members of the Centennial high school student body the sopho- mores credited themselves in many areas and had the opportunity for building for the future with the most competent leadership of Fred Nichols, President: La XY'anda Mason, Vice Presidentg johnnye Ruth Wfhite, Secretary and R. D, Pittman, Treasurer. 'The sophomores could list many athletes that certainly the sports' section of this bool-1 attests to. Again the creative field found many competent and willing workers engaged in journalism and print shop worl-1 essential to producing the paper and yearbook. 'The Drama Club, Tomahawks, Lancers and on infinitum tells the tale of the sopho- more group. Remember how hard they worked as a class to make the Christmas XVhite Box Fund a success. Yes, participation in school activities has kept the standard of Centennial bright and shiny with many deeds of this group. From a humble beginning, as a group and as a new school this class has been able to develop to the point where progress and improvement is most noticeable. QXVith the election of Bob Thompson, President, jack XWalker, Vice President, Bessie Thompson, Secretary and Shirley Marshall, Treasurer, this class added to the school by first doing all the small things that had to be accomplished. They grew and learned to think on broader and wider horizons. From supervision at games to selling tickets for the campus queen to the school carnival, theirs was a vital interest and concern. 'With many able in this class to contribute both athletically and scholastically to the student body, this group is already looking forward to the time of class rings and senior sweaters and the new class officers. Sludeul Gorerazmenl VERNIE WILLIAMS, Afbleticf It takes leadership to accomplish any worth- while activity. The War Cry is no exception and the fine work done by Clarence Shephard and Harold Kodani as Editor and Assistant Editor attest to that. From the opening of school to the last deadline in March, the War Cry staff functions in high gear to bring a true re- cording of all school activities at Centennial. You will no doubt notice the increased size of the yearbook over last year. Quite a bargain at the school price. Not to be forgotten are the section editors who carry their individual loads to conclusion. And last the outstanding job accomplished by Leo Foster, the Business manager. Once again the Apaches had another highly successful season, tying with Inglewood for Bay League honors. The Apaches started off by dropping a tight game to the Saints 6-0. Next week they rallied back to defeat Compton 7-2. A set-back by Los Angeles 25-20 conditioned the Tribe for a thrilling victory over their chief rival Santa Monica, 18-6. Centennial started league play by defeating Mira Costa 21-7. After battling Ingle- wood to a 6-6 tie they went on and swept Torrance, Leuzinger and Redondo by scores of 33-O, 54-6 and 28-7. The Apaches then entered the C.I.F Playoffs but were once again set back by determined Saint Anthony 20-13. The season ended for the Apaches after a most successful finale. PRFD WIT.l.lAhfS. Apache cindermen once again gained public recognition throughout the Southland by the start of another fine season. Winning such meets as the Santa Ana Relays, Hunt- ington Beach Relays and the Mira Costa Relays, they proved their determination to take the C.I.F. , Losing such greats as Charles Dumas, world famous high jumper, Kenneth Dennis, Paul Lowe, Peter Thompson and Ken Thompson made room for future champions like Huey Vallery, Arthur Day, Larry Rutledge, Cornelius Dumas, Henry Harris, Arthur Wright and John Blaylock. Success of the teams are largely due to the fine coaching of Bill Gill and Link Richmond. 6' HL EY VALLERX ' WBA HENRY BRESCIANI Huntington Hearn, Santa Ann, ,Mira Hosta Rainy 6'nn1n,vs, I 956.
