iv AND FROSHICROSS COUNTRY he I. V. team shows its strength placing second in district. The jayvee cross country team has usually been a weak link between two strong ones. This year was a pleasing exception as the junior Eagles went un- defeated in the Wilco League dual meet competition. Their strength was enhanced in the district meet with the addition of part- time varsity runners Steve Snelling and Frank Soots. Another fine jayvee runner was Mark Goin. He ran No.1 nearly all year long when Snelling and Soots were on varsity. With their one-two finish, Snelling and Goin led thej. V. 's to a secondplace finish in district. VARSITY FOOTBALL 25-27 comeback victory over Wilson earns the Eagles state glory. An undefeated season and a state title were the highlights of the 7972 football season. The team matured more with each game and had great team unity and morale. Scott McCord guided the offensive unit and passed for over 7,000 yards. His fa- orite targets were joe Kern and Gregg Rognle. Running backs Raye Williams, Rick Boothman, Mike Smith. and Russ Watts proved to be an unstoppable force. Cliff Harrison anchored the line. The offense averaged 37.3 points per game. All-State middle guard Dan O'Donnell, tackle jerry Hanson, and linebacker Greg Hopkins spearheaded the defense. joe Kern, Scott McCord, Brian Barlow, and Mark Porterfield kept opposing quarter- backs rattled, while holding down their job in the secondary. The defense was stingy and stubborn in giving up points, as they held their op- ponents to 9.9 points per game. Togetherness, poise, confidence and great coaching were the reasons for suc- cess in this, long to-be-remembered football season. Coach McCarty confers with Scott during a timeout. Mike Smith tucks ball away and glances for hole behind the powerful blocking of Russ Watts and Rick Boothman.
