It is the governing body of the students as well as their voice. The SGA organizes and sponsors All Campus Week-end, the Coffeehouse, the Blood Drive, dances, movies, and several other fun activities. One of the most important projects facing the SGA is raising money for the renovation of the SUB. The Centenary Fair and the auction are just a few of the money-raising activities which have proved to be very successful. 145 Yoncopin £S . - s j ... - ©sfc , ' srr;- . • I ' .... Without these special people ' s help, the publication of the 1980 Yoncopin would not have been possible. The yearbook has been an effort on our part, but we hope that it brings lasting memories to the reader and therefore for us it becomes a satisfying accomplishment. 147 Conglomerate The CONGLOMERATE is an important part of the college ' s communication system. With these ideas in mind, the W.I.Z. Club (Women Interested in Zeta) was formed in the Spring of 1979. With the thirst for recognition and the quinch for establishment, these young women branched out dutifully, exemplifying the meaning of their motto, Whatever the mind of a woman can conceive, and her heart believes, she can achieve. From that time on these young women actively participated in the Heart Fund Drive, Storks West (National Project of Zeta Phi Beta), All Campus Weekend, the Centenary Fair, High School Weekend, Who ' s Who in American Universities and Colleges, the Women ' s basketball team, Afro American History Month, Homecoming, and many other activities. Accepted by the college in 1979, this organization, under the leadership of Delecia and Vondel Smith, became a highlighted part of Centenary when it was charted on February 23, 1980 under the name of Sigma Iota Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. While senior George Lett took his place next to Robert Parish and Tom Kerwin as one of the top scorers and rebounders in Centenary histo- ry, sophomore Cherokee Rhone emerged as one of the nation ' s top young stars. The Jet Lett and the Chief Rhone both averaged near twenty points and over ten re- bounds a game and sparked a competitive charge by the Gents in the second half of the season. Sophomore Steve Burkhalter improved greatly as a swing man between guard and for- ward and was just one of a young group of play- ers who offer a building block for future sea- sons. Centenary hosted the University of Arkansas before a full house in the Gold Done. In the opener of the Centenary Doubleheader at Hirsch Coliseum, the Gents scored 121 points against Alaska- Anchorage — the third best sin- gle game in school history. Notre Dame beat Tulane in the second game. All-American Beth Johnson was the team leader, following her AIAW Division II all- around individual championship by finish- ing second in the US World University Games ' team trials competition. She then helped the US win a bronze team medal in the Games in Mexico City and qualified for three individual finals. Beth, the Ladies ' lone upperclassman, was joined by talented freshmen Jennifer For- shee (Kirkwood, Mo.), Karen Edelsten (Bris- band, Australia), Jill Brown(Rockwall, Tx.), Margot Todd (Albany, Ga.), and Kim Straus- s(El Paso, Tx.).
